At this very moment, Professor Oak was engaged in an extraordinary project—using the Pokédex numbering system to organize every Pokémon discovered so far, while also recording detailed information about their traits and natural habitats. It was, without question, a monumental undertaking. Once completed, it would mark the height of Professor Oak's career, a moment that would secure his place in history forever.
Logan had once been fortunate enough to live at Oak's laboratory for a period of time. The professor had shown him no reservations—opening all of his research notes and materials for Logan to study, allowing him to rapidly supplement his understanding of this world.
Perhaps the Oak Laboratory could not rival the vastness of a grand library, but in terms of depth, the Pokémon knowledge it contained was enough to transform even a layman into a scholar.
Before being transported here, Logan had not played some of the latest Pokémon games. But thanks to his time at Oak's lab, he had filled in the gaps in his knowledge. So, the instant he laid eyes on the fossil before him, he instantly recognized its origin—
A Pokémon unique to the Kalos Region.
"Logan, may I ask you a question? Where exactly did you obtain this fossil?"
With his vast expertise, Blaine could not possibly fail to recognize the creature's origin. His hand pressed on the edge of the machinery as he leaned forward, his expression filled with visible excitement.
"I dug it up inside Mt. Moon," Logan answered firmly.
"This… this is the fossil of Amaura, a Pokémon native to Kalos. In that region, they once even discovered living specimens frozen solid in ice. Research indicates this Pokémon is calm and gentle by nature, preferring to live in frigid lands where it could hide from ruthless predators hunting it."
"…You must understand—though ancient times were rich in resources, the environment was also far harsher. The food chain was brutally unforgiving. Even legendary beings like Groudon and Kyogre roamed freely across the land and sea. Imagine how cruel survival must have been back then."
For a scientist like Blaine, discovering something so fascinating always triggered boundless curiosity. He wanted nothing more than to dig into every detail.
"All ancient Pokémon are now extinct. Today, we can only glimpse them through fossils. As for why they went extinct—human research offers many theories. Some say these creatures were wiped out by a meteorite strike. This theory originates from ancient Sinnoh depictions and the meteor craters that have been discovered. According to these accounts, in ancient times two massive meteors fell from the sky. The Creator destroyed one, but could not stop the other from crashing into the earth. The result was catastrophic climate shifts that annihilated most life forms of that era."
"…Others believe the Creator itself intentionally eradicated ancient species—claiming they were too violent, too merciless, too devoid of empathy or reason."
Blaine's words flowed like an endless river, his manner more like that of a historian or mythologist than a genetic researcher.
"I recall reading that Amaura was successfully revived from fossils on rare occasions. Though scarce, the fact remains—they have been brought back and even live in the present. Based on research notes, its typing should be Ice and Rock, correct?"
Logan crossed his arms. He wasn't overly concerned about ancient catastrophes. His thoughts were more practical—could this Pokémon strengthen his team?
"Yes, that's correct. The revived Amaura is indeed Ice and Rock type. A unique typing, unmatched in the modern world. But…" Blaine sighed, tapping keys on his console as documents appeared on the monitor, "…it doesn't quite align with your abilities, Logan."
"This is a question that puzzles many researchers: why can Pokémon only possess two types at most? Why can their bodies only withstand two different forms of energy? In fact, based on Kalos research of living fossil specimens, Amaura originally bore Dragon and Ice typings. But what we revive now is not its true form—it's only a fossil product."
"…All Pokémon revived from fossils carry Rock typing. Not because they were originally Rock type and became fossils—but rather, because becoming fossils imposed that typing upon them. The distinction is crucial. If we ever hope to restore their original forms, it would require—"
"'Primal Reversion,' perhaps?" Logan interjected.
"Exactly. The so-called 'Primal Reversion.' A theory unproven and elusive. But even if such a revival were possible, giving ancient Pokémon their original forms might grant them terrifying strength briefly… yet in the long run, it would doom them. The modern environment is vastly different from that of the distant past. To revert fully to their ancient state would be nothing less than a slow suicide for most species—except perhaps the legendary Pokémon themselves."
Blaine shook his head, then chuckled. "Still, you know quite a lot for a trainer. Tell me, Logan—ever considered becoming a Pokémon researcher?"
Logan waved both hands quickly. "No, no. What I know comes only from cramming at Professor Oak's lab. When it comes to finer details, I'm far from competent. And besides, I'm only interested in being a trainer. Maybe in the future I'll consider it, but not now."
"Ha! Everyone has their own path. Who knows? Maybe one day, research will call to you after all!"
"If I ever were to study, I'd prefer history and mythology. Legendary Pokémon intrigue me far more."
Logan walked to Blaine's side, watching him input lines of data into the computer.
"History and mythology, eh? There's actually a young girl in Sinnoh quite passionate about that field as well. Seems the younger generation has taken a liking to old legends."
Blaine smiled faintly. "Reviving an ancient fossil is never instant. This device must run continuously for two full days. Conveniently, that timing will line up with Mewtwo's genetic adjustment sequence."
"You should go rest, Logan. Leave the rest to me. Discovering Amaura's fossil in Mt. Moon is a remarkable find. I have a geologist friend—the one who built this research facility. He'll be thrilled. In fact, this discovery may prove that the ancient world was once a single continent, only later split into the regions we know today. And… it may even connect to the legend of Mt. Moon's fallen Moon Stone from outer space."
Once a researcher entered the depths of his work, interruptions became useless. Logan watched Blaine sink deeper into his project, while in the nearby nutrient chamber, Mewtwo remained still and quiet. After a moment's thought, Logan decided it would be better to seek out Green.
