Chapter 138 - CHAPTER 138

Attached to the list of Shin'ō Academy graduates were the results of their assessments — combat, Kidō, Hakuda, and general aptitude. These records served as a guideline for recruitment into the Gotei 13.

But in truth, the "guideline" mattered little. The reality was that each division captain had the final say, and there was no universal standard. A captain's preference could outweigh any grade.

If a captain disliked you, no amount of talent would guarantee entry. On the other hand, if a captain favored you, exceptions would be made regardless of your shortcomings.

One of the clearest examples of this was Ise Nanao.

Her lineage prevented her from properly manifesting a Zanpakutō. At the Academy she excelled almost exclusively in Kidō, but by the usual standards she should have been destined for the Kidō Corps. Yet she was accepted into the 8th Division. Officially, this was credited to her Kidō skill. In truth, it was because Captain Kyōraku Shunsui — her uncle — took her in to protect her. That personal connection, not academic merit, was the deciding factor.

Shigure flipped through the latest roster with mild detachment. The Eleventh Division had a fearsome reputation as Seireitei's foremost combat squad, but very few graduates actually applied to it willingly. For many young souls, battle equaled death.

Most sought the safety of another division, or even a desk post, to escape the constant hunger of Rukongai life. Becoming a Shinigami guaranteed three meals a day — for many, that was enough.

The Fourth Division, in contrast, suffered for the opposite reason: its duties were "too boring." Students craved neither endless paperwork nor tending the injured. The Eleventh was dangerous, the Fourth dull — and so both were often overlooked.

After skimming through names, Shigure approved most applications to the Eleventh without much thought. That was, until one particular name made his eyes narrow.

A name he knew well.

Someone he had investigated before, and continued to keep watch over even now. Someone tied to one of the four great noble clans of Soul Society.

The name: Tsunayashiro Ayana.

Shigure paused, his brows tightening. He remembered their encounter after the Tsunayashiro Tokinada incident, when the corruption of that noble family had been laid bare. He had spoken with her then — the young heir. And now, here she was, seeking entry into his division.

Out of both caution and curiosity, Shigure decided he would speak with her directly.

He brought Third Seat Asido Kano along to the Academy. Captains or their lieutenants often arrived in person to meet new recruits; his presence raised no suspicion. Asido, ever reliable, would manage the induction of the other Eleventh Division recruits, while Shigure sought Ayana alone.

He found her in the Academy gardens, still in the white uniform of a student. Sunlight filtered through the branches of aged trees, casting mottled patterns of shade on the ground.

Her bearing was calm, refined — unmistakably noble. But she stood opposite him now not as the head of the Tsunayashiro clan, but as a graduate awaiting her captain's decision.

"Lady Tsunayashiro," Shigure began softly, "may we speak a moment?"

Ayana inclined her head with the poise expected of her station.

When they had moved aside, Shigure asked plainly, "Why did you choose the Eleventh Division?"

Her violet eyes met his without hesitation. "Captain Shigure, I told you before: I intend to become a true Shinigami. To be strong. And strength is forged only in battle. No other squad embodies that principle more than the Eleventh."

Shigure tilted his head. Her conviction was surprising — and risky. "With your lineage, I expected you would remain within your family's inner circle, or perhaps choose a division more… dignified. As the head of the Tsunayashiro clan, you need not serve in the Gotei 13 at all."

Ayana's lips curved into a faint, polite smile. "Which is exactly why I must. The privilege of nobility without the burden of trial would leave me hollow. If my clan is to survive its sins, its heir must be tempered in hardship."

Smart girl, Shigure thought. She understood both politics and strength.

"So," she continued, "does this mean you will approve my application?"

He studied her for a moment longer, then nodded. "You've already declared your resolve, and your assessments prove you're more than qualified. I'd be a fool to turn away a genius who willingly seeks my division."

Still, he added with measured honesty, "Understand this: the Eleventh Division is not a noble court. Many of its men are crude, violent, and care nothing for aristocracy. Life here will not suit a lady of your background. Are you prepared for that?"

"I considered that long before I applied," Ayana answered firmly.

Shigure regarded her in silence for a few seconds, then allowed a faint smile. "Very well. Welcome to the Eleventh Division… Ayana."

Deliberately, he omitted her family title. From this moment, she would not be addressed as the head of the Tsunayashiro clan. She would be known simply as a soldier of his division.

And perhaps, in time, she would prove whether her convictions were more than words.
