The two familiar figures standing before Rukia were none other than Kuchiki Byakuya, Captain of the Sixth Division, and Abarai Renji, Lieutenant of the Sixth Division.
The moment she saw them, Rukia was stunned.
Then she immediately understood why they had come.
Her actions in the Human World had been exposed.
She had illegally transferred her Shinigami powers to a human, Kurosaki Ichigo, without authorization from Soul Society.
Such an act violated Soul Society law.
As a member of the Kuchiki Clan, one of the Four Great Noble Houses, her actions carried even greater significance.
The matter could not simply be ignored.
Therefore, Byakuya had personally come to the Human World to bring her back to Soul Society.
After learning the purpose of their visit, Rukia's emotions became extremely complicated.
She knew she had broken the rules.
No matter her reasons, the fact remained unchanged.
In the end, she silently accepted the outcome.
After all, she had chosen to transfer her powers of her own will.
However, before Byakuya and Renji could depart with Rukia, an unexpected person arrived.
Kurosaki Ichigo.
Having sensed unfamiliar spiritual pressure near Rukia, Ichigo initially assumed a Hollow had appeared and rushed over immediately.
Instead, he found two Shinigami confronting his friend.
After a brief explanation, he learned their identities.
Captain Kuchiki Byakuya.
Lieutenant Abarai Renji.
Members of the Gotei 13 who had come to take Rukia back to Soul Society.
Renji's attitude toward Ichigo was openly hostile.
In his eyes, regardless of Rukia's reasons, this human was ultimately responsible for her current predicament.
Had Rukia not transferred her powers to him, none of this would have happened.
Following a tense exchange of words, Ichigo reached a simple conclusion.
He could not allow them to take Rukia away.
She was his friend.
And the phrase "return for trial" sounded far from reassuring.
Without hesitation, Ichigo drew his oversized Zanpakutō and attacked.
Unfortunately, courage alone could not bridge the enormous gap in strength.
Although Ichigo had successfully defeated numerous Hollows since obtaining Shinigami powers, his experience remained extremely limited.
He had only possessed those powers for a short period.
He lacked formal training.
He knew little about Zanpakutō, Kidō, Hakuda, Hohō, or the fundamentals of Shinigami combat.
Against an opponent like Byakuya, he stood no chance.
The battle ended almost instantly.
With a single strike, Byakuya shattered Ichigo's Zanpakutō.
Then, using precise control, he attacked the source of Ichigo's borrowed Shinigami power.
The power Rukia had transferred into him was forcibly severed.
Ichigo's spiritual pressure collapsed.
His temporary Shinigami powers disappeared.
The massive blade in his hand vanished.
Unlike a true Zanpakutō, Ichigo's weapon at that time was merely a manifestation of the Shinigami powers he had received from Rukia.
It was not the genuine Zanpakutō of a fully awakened Shinigami.
Once that borrowed power was removed, the blade naturally ceased to exist.
Byakuya showed no hesitation.
His objective was simple:
Recover the power Rukia had transferred.
Nothing more.
As for the human who had received that power, he considered it irrelevant.
Thus, under Ichigo's helpless gaze, Byakuya and Renji departed with Rukia.
The encounter between human and Shinigami seemed destined to end there.
Rukia returned to Soul Society.
Ichigo returned to being an ordinary human.
Everything appeared finished.
But Kurosaki Ichigo was never an ordinary human.
For several days after losing his powers, he struggled with frustration and confusion.
Yet eventually, he arrived at a firm conclusion.
Rukia was his friend.
He could not simply stand by while she faced judgment alone.
More importantly, she had sacrificed her own powers to save him and protect his family.
Without her, Yuzu and Karin might have died that night.
Without her, he would never have become a Shinigami.
No matter how difficult it might be, he intended to rescue her.
Others shared similar feelings.
Inoue Orihime.
Sado Yasutora.
Ishida Uryū.
Orihime and Chad both owed much to Ichigo and Rukia.
Neither was willing to abandon a friend.
As for Uryū, while his relationship with Shinigami remained complicated, his curiosity regarding Soul Society and his respect for Ichigo motivated him to join as well.
However, determination alone was insufficient.
There were two major obstacles before them.
First, Ichigo had lost his Shinigami powers.
Second, none of them possessed a method of entering Soul Society.
Eventually, all of them thought of the same person.
Urahara Kisuke.
The owner of the Urahara Shop had always been mysterious.
Ever since Rukia's arrival in Karakura Town, he had quietly provided assistance whenever necessary.
His knowledge of spiritual matters was clearly extraordinary.
If anyone could help them, it would be him.
As it turned out, they had come to the right place.
Upon hearing their request, Urahara agreed to help.
And thus began Ichigo's true training.
Not merely as a substitute Shinigami.
But as someone who would awaken the power that had always existed within him.
Meanwhile, in Soul Society
News of Rukia Kuchiki's arrest spread rapidly throughout the Seireitei.
Rukia had never been an obscure figure.
Years earlier, when she was adopted into the Kuchiki Clan, her name had become known across Soul Society.
A girl born in the Rukongai, adopted by the head of one of the Four Great Noble Houses.
Such a story naturally attracted attention.
Not all of it was positive.
Many nobles looked down upon her origins.
Many Shinigami whispered behind her back.
Now, with her arrest, those rumors resurfaced once more.
Discussions filled barracks, courtyards, and division headquarters alike.
Some sympathized with her.
Others mocked her.
Many simply watched with interest.
Regardless of public opinion, however, the matter now rested in the hands of Central 46.
Until a verdict could be reached, Rukia would remain imprisoned in the Sōkyoku Hill detention facility, specifically within the Repentance Cell (Senzaikyū).
At that same time, several senior captains happened to be gathered in conversation.
Among them were Kyōraku Shunsui, Ukitake Jūshirō, and Gosuke Shigure.
Shunsui took a sip of sake and spoke casually.
"According to the regulations, transferring Shinigami powers to a human without authorization is certainly a serious offense."
He shrugged.
"But Rukia is still a member of the Kuchiki family. I doubt the punishment will be too severe."
Ukitake immediately frowned.
"Those are dangerous words, Shunsui."
"If people hear you saying that, they'll think the noble families receive special treatment."
Shunsui laughed.
"Would they be wrong?"
"The influence of the noble houses has always existed."
"Even Central 46 is deeply tied to the noble system."
Ukitake sighed but offered no rebuttal.
Because, uncomfortable as it was, there was some truth in Shunsui's words.
The conversation might have ended there.
However, Gosuke Shigure suddenly spoke.
His voice was calm.
Yet unusually serious.
"I don't think this matter is that simple."
Both captains turned toward him.
Shigure slowly set down his teacup.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"The punishment Rukia Kuchiki ultimately receives…"
"I'm afraid it may be far more severe than any of us expect."
For a moment, silence filled the room.
Neither Shunsui nor Ukitake knew why Shigure sounded so certain.
But hearing those words, an inexplicable sense of unease rose within their hearts.
Far away, deep within the shadows of Soul Society
Aizen Sōsuke quietly smiled.
The next stage of his plan had already begun.
