The elevator chimed softly as Jack stepped out onto the executive floor, his shoes echoing against the glossy marble tiles. It was just past nine in the morning, and while most of the Brooks Group wasn't fully awake yet, Jack was already several hours into his day. He never came this early without a reason. He passed the reception desk, nodded once to the assistant who stammered out a greeting, and made his way toward the corner office on the 15th floor, the same floor as his office, the one recently assigned to Selena Blake. Her door was slightly ajar. He pushed it open.
Empty.
Jack's brow furrowed as he stepped inside. The space was tidy, minimalist. It was so Selena's signature touch. A single ceramic mug sat clean on the desk, a closed laptop rested beside a leather-bound planner, but there was no sign she'd been in today.
He leaned against the desk, checked his watch, then looked up as a familiar voice called out from the hallway.
"You're looking for your girlfriend?"
