Chapter 28 - Part 28: The Eyes That Follow

The halls felt different now.

Michelle walked beside Steve, their fingers gently intertwined, but every step through the school was heavier than before. Whispers followed them like shadows. Eyes trailed their every move.

Some looked curious. Others—judgmental. Envious. Even a little angry.

Steve didn't let go.

Not for a second.

"Ignore them," he whispered.

"I'm trying," Michelle said quietly.

As they reached their classroom, she saw Chloe, Tara, and the third girl sitting in the back row, their faces unreadable. But Michelle noticed the change. The defiance was gone—replaced with tension. Guilt, maybe. Or shame.

Mr. Lawrence stood at the front of the class. Just as the bell rang, he cleared his throat.

"Before we begin, I want to say one thing. Bullying will never be tolerated in this classroom. And if anyone thinks intimidation or cruelty is how you gain power—think again."

His eyes flicked, briefly but sharply, to Chloe's side of the room.

A few students turned. Chloe shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

Michelle sat down, heart pounding. She glanced at Steve. He gave her a small smile, and she knew—he wasn't going anywhere.

At lunch, they sat at their usual table outside. A few girls from Michelle's dorm passed by. One of them stopped.

"Hey," she said. "Michelle… I just wanted to say what happened wasn't okay. I'm glad you spoke up."

Michelle blinked, surprised. "Thanks."

More girls followed. Not friends—just classmates. But they came with little nods, small words of kindness, even if awkward.

"You're brave."

"She had no right to do that to you."

"You and Steve… you're good together."

Each word stitched something back together in Michelle's heart.

But peace never lasted long in high school hallways.

Later that afternoon, a note was slipped under Michelle's locker.

She picked it up and unfolded it slowly.

You might have won this time, but he'll get tired of you. They always do.—Anonymous

Her chest tightened. But she didn't cry. Not this time.

Instead, she walked straight to Steve, who was waiting near the library steps.

She handed him the note.

He read it once. Then crumpled it in his fist.

"They don't get to scare you anymore," he said. "We're reporting this too."

But Michelle shook her head. "Not this one."

"Why not?"

She looked up at him. Calm. Strong. "Because I'm not afraid of them anymore."

Steve searched her eyes.

Then he smiled.

"I'm proud of you."

That night, in the quiet of her dorm, Michelle stared at her ceiling.

Things weren't perfect. They were still complicated.

But she was stronger now.

Because when the world tried to break her, she didn't fall apart.

And when the walls closed in—Steve was there.

And love, real love, didn't disappear in the dark.It stood with her, hand in hand… right through the storm.
