Chapter 24 - Train

Zena had to make sure she did not step between the gaps of the tracks. Her pace was quite slow due to this. She walked and walked, but nothing happened.

'God how long have I been walking? It has to be more than eight hours.'

She questioned the time she had spent walking as she was starting to feel tired. Looking down the tracks both ways and to any and all near by tracks Zena laid down on one of the thicker boards and tried to sleep.

Hours later she was awoken. Not by an attack or by an attack, but by a whistle. It felt unnatural. Looking around for any near by trains Zena saw nothing on the other tracks. Then she felt something. She looked to the tracks she was on and saw a train. It seemed to be a steam train. Even so it was going much faster than any steam train should be able to go. The train only looked like a spec in the distance, but it was gaining distance fast.

Looking around Zena tried to find a track to jump to, but the near by tracks were all above her. While the ones that were below were to far way for her to jump.

Turning in the opposite direction she ran as fast as she could. Every step had to be perfect or she would fall through the tracks. As she ran he cloak fluttered.

Every step was a monumental task for Zena. Sweat drip off her body. It was not just physical. The steps were also mentally draining as she could not stop focusing.

Then she heard it again, the whistle blared. It was getting closer and closer. The once speck was now clearly in sight. She could not get to any of the near by tracks. The train was approaching fast and yet she stopped.

She dropped down, grabbing the bottom of the track. It was risky, but it was the only way.

She held on tight. Her hands were going white as the train approached.

Then it was on her. The train was moving way faster than anything Zena had ever seen. The wind rushed. Zena held on with everything she had. The air around here seemed to be her worst enemy as it tried to pull her off. The wheel of the train caused the tracks to shack and bounce.

What only should have lasted moments never stopped. Every train Zena had seen was small with few train cars with them. However, this one seemed to have hundreds if not thousands of cars attached to it.

She waited and waited for what felt like days. Hell it might actually have been a day and yet it still went on. Then something changed. The train slowed. More and more the trained slowed. Till it stopped.

Seeing this Zena made a hasty decision to get on the train. What ever the train was it was going in the same direction she was, the stalactite.

It was no more than a second after Zena got on that the train started again. The ferocity of train was back and much stronger at that. The train that was once going too fast was now going faster. Zena waited in the box car she got in. She was recovering from the strain of staying under the tracks.

Then there was a crack and boom right after. The train had broken the sound barrier. The air outside the train seemed to shake. Loose woodchips flew by in a blur.

Minutes later the tracks were no longer wooden. They changed, the tracks were smooth. Trying to look at the tracks she glanced out of the car for a moment. In that moment she saw the tracks while also almost being thrown out of the car.

The tracks were now made of a teal like metal. Instead of the rails being attached to the tracks the rail and track were not two separate things. It looked as if it was purposely cut that way.

'Is this why the train stopped, to switch to these track?'

Feeling exhaustion take over, Zena fell asleep in the corner of the box car. When she awoke the train was still going.

'Might as well check my runes.'

While thinking about her memories Zena felt the train slow down again before speedily regaining speed again.

Since it was not going to fast yet Zena checked outside. The tracks were gold and were very much the same as before, except for the fact they shined.

Looking around Zena noticed all the near by tracks were the same.

Then she saw it, her destination was nearing. Much faster than she had ever hoped.
