Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – Shadows of the Unknown

The city had fallen into an eerie silence, a stark contrast to the chaos that had ravaged it only days before.

Jaden and Tess moved cautiously through the skeletal remains of what used to be a bustling industrial district. The moon hung low behind thick clouds, casting everything in shades of silver and shadow. The occasional distant groan of a wandering infected was the only sound breaking the stillness.

Jaden's eyes flickered briefly, catching the faint glow of something only he could see in the corner of his vision—an internal alert, unlike the usual locks or skill updates. He kept his face calm.

[New Objective Activated]Investigate unusual energy readings detected nearby.

"Energy readings?" Tess whispered, brow furrowed. "Like what? Power plants? Generators?"

"Could be," Jaden said quietly. "Or something else."

They exchanged a look and pressed forward, drawn toward the source of the anomaly. The streets narrowed, buildings loomed higher, and the air grew colder, heavier. Electric blue sparks flickered faintly between broken windows and twisted metal frames.

At the heart of the district stood an abandoned factory, its rusted gates hanging crookedly. The humming grew louder—deep, mechanical, but tinged with something… unnatural.

Jaden's Danger Sense flared sharply as they stepped inside.

The air shimmered.

From the shadows, a figure emerged.

Tall. Cloaked in dark fabric that seemed to absorb the dim light. Their eyes glowed with an icy white hue that pierced the gloom.

"You're Awakened," the figure said softly, voice smooth but carrying an undeniable weight.

Jaden's grip tightened on his folding knife, but he said nothing.

"I have watched many like you," the figure continued, stepping forward. "But you… you are unique."

Tess raised her crowbar defensively, eyes narrowing.

The figure raised a hand, and shadows twisted and writhed around them like living smoke. From that darkness, grotesque creatures formed—zombies, but faster, more cunning, with unnatural sinews and glowing veins.

"The Awakened you've seen are merely the first wave," the figure said. "There is a new breed rising—born of the infection and shadows. Evolved beyond the mindless hunger you know."

Jaden felt a cold shiver race down his spine.

"Who are you?" he demanded.

The figure smiled, a smile that didn't reach their chilling eyes.

"I am Nyx. The harbinger of the next stage. I am neither alive nor dead… but something in between."

Jaden's Danger Sense flared again, sharper than before. He took a slow, steady breath, suppressing the urge to reveal the truth of the system.

"You wield power," Nyx said, eyes locking with his. "But your enemies are growing stronger. The Awakened hunt survivors. The infected mutate. And my kind… we are coming."

With a flick of their wrist, Nyx summoned a swirling vortex of shadows that engulfed them.

In an instant, they vanished.

Tess lowered her crowbar slowly. "Did that just happen?"

Jaden shook his head, heart pounding. "That was no ordinary enemy."

He glanced away, hiding the faint glow pulsing silently just out of her view.

[Warning]Unknown hostile entities detected. Prepare for escalation.

Jaden's mind raced. If Nyx represented what was to come, the apocalypse was about to get far worse.

"We need to get stronger," Jaden said grimly. "Keep honing your abilities. We'll need all the edge we can get."

Tess nodded. "Agreed. And fast."

As they slipped back into the night, Jaden's thoughts churned. A shadowy figure with terrifying power. New breeds of infected. The fragile line between survival and extinction was disappearing fast.

But one thing was clear.

Jaden Knightley wasn't just fighting zombies anymore.

He was fighting the darkness itself.
