Chapter 2 - Demon King?

Don't get me wrong, I am strong.

Even though my body belonged to a fifteen-year-old human, my soul was that of a 200-year-old demon.

The tricky thing was that if I were to use my powers too much, my body would also turn into a demon since my soul was strong.

I didn't want that.

Not because I didn't want to be a demon, no. Demons rule!

Higher life span, healthier and stronger body, better soul power, and even more capacity.

And the best part was I wouldn't grow a horn or something... probably.

Demons looked just like humans. You understand why the trench coat was fishy now, right?

However, it wasn't the time yet. Thanks to the information I had from listening to those two demons, I knew that my soul was marked when I was a baby.

So, I knew the demons would come for me eventually, and I couldn't let them know I regressed. I needed to prepare for that and be seen as a human.

But using a bit of power wouldn't hurt.

Looking around, I checked the monsters. The last time I was here, I had already run away.

This time, I didn't need to.

First, a shadow covered my face. No matter what, it was the 21st century, and there were cameras everywhere.

Then I left the cafe I was in. Outside was a bigger chaos.

There were no humans left. They had either run away or... well, they were eaten.

But the monsters were still around.

Some lizards with spears and blue gorillas.

A fifty-meter-long snake and a centaur.

Ah, I was here for the school application.

The city would be in ruins and monster-infested for the next 8 years.

So, my school application wouldn't be answered. Luckily, my parents weren't in this city.

I started walking toward the snake. I could clear the road a bit.

Seeing me move, many monsters started running my way.

"Pests! You dare confront me, the demon king?"

Yeah, I was no way near as powerful as a demon king. No, I hadn't even seen a high-ranking demon, apart from him. Even he wasn't that high-ranking.

But I was back to my fifteen-year-old self, and there was no one around to confirm my allegations.

So, here it goes: "Die, you insects!"

Of course, in front of these monsters, I was no different than a demon king.

With simple spells, they were burned, crushed, swayed, sliced, or squashed.

I might have slapped some of them for the fun of it. It seemed like I didn't lose much power by regressing since my power was engraved in my soul.

My human body made it a bit hard to use magic, but it wasn't that bad.

Before I realized it, the whole street was clean, and the snake was looking at me.

It didn't attack first, probably realizing I wasn't an easy prey like the others.

Or maybe it was because it couldn't see my eyes since my whole face was covered by a shadow.

It didn't matter, I extended my hand and a blue beam left it. There was a big hole in the snake's body.

---

"It has been three years since the monsters invaded Earth, but the identity of the demon king is still unknown. We might be in the middle of a war with the..."

Shit, I shouldn't have done that.

It had been three years since the incident. When I came back home, the whole world had already heard the news.

So, my parents were, obviously, scared, knowing I was in the city. But they were relieved when they saw me walk in without a scratch.

I had to lie that I left the city earlier than expected since the number of survivors was low.

But the next words I heard shocked me:

"Then, you haven't seen the demon king."

The what?

It turns out I was recorded by a CCTV, one that had a voice recording.

Since when did they have a voice recording system?

No, how come a CCTV in a monster-infested area still worked?

Anyway, all my childish acts were recorded, and it was worse than just embarrassing myself.

The world started believing that there was a war between monsters and demons, and the Earth was dragged into it by accident.

And they have been looking for this "demon king" since then.

Unfortunately for them, the demon king was gone.

Why? Simple, I had sealed my soul.

There were a lot of reasons for me to seal my soul, but the most important one was that I needed to stay human.

The process was irreversible until I met certain conditions.

The conditions were-

"The big day is today, huh, Colt?"

Colt... that was my name. I used a different name in the demon world just in case...

But I wouldn't need that name anymore. My name was Colt.

"Yes, I am super excited," I answered.

It was my eighteenth birthday today, and my power would reveal itself.

Well, you know what happened. There would be no power revealing itself, and I would be depressed.

And in three months, he would come.

Surely, they would wait three months before coming. I needed to be at my worst, my dreams had to be shattered, and I had to be living like hell so that I would jump at the offer.

***

The evening came, and I celebrated my birthday with my parents.

I was born at 10:37, so that was the time I would receive my power.

And it was 11:00 now...

My parents stayed with me.

It was a good feeling I enjoyed once again for the last three years, having a family you can live your sadness and happiness together.

We were experiencing anxiety together right now.

My mother had the power of moving iron. It worked only on iron and not on any other metal.

My father had the power of crying whenever he wanted to... Was that even a power?

But I didn't have any... They didn't mind the fact that I didn't have any powers.

They were sad because they knew I wanted powers.

Of course, in this timeline, I didn't tell them something like "I want to have powers and become a hero."

But I didn't act like I didn't care, either. It would be suspicious. No, they would think I was lying.

Which kid wouldn't want superpowers?

And they were acting like this right now since they still thought the same way.

Remembering their situation later, I left the living room to go to sleep.

Did they think I was going to cry in my room?

Of course, I wouldn't sleep. Nor would I cry...

I would awaken my power!
