I watched as Alpha Kael returned to the dining room, his face carefully composed but his scent betraying his inner turmoil. My eyes tracked his movements as he slid back into his chair, avoiding eye contact with everyone at the table. Something was definitely wrong.

I caught Kaelen's gaze and gave him a subtle nod. He understood immediately what I intended to do. Years of political maneuvering had taught him the art of extracting information, and months of our growing bond had taught me how to read his signals. We were a formidable team now.

"Alpha Kael," I said, my voice carrying easily across the table despite its softness. "You seem troubled this evening. I hope nothing's amiss in your territory?"

His head snapped up, eyes widening slightly before he controlled his expression. "Not at all, Luna Seraphina. Merely some routine pack matters requiring attention."
