The palace was quiet except for the soft patter of feet outside our chamber. Guards, I assumed, circling the perimeter with heightened vigilance now that their new prince had arrived. Inside our room, a single lamp cast a warm glow over Kaelen, who was standing by the window, cradling our newborn son against his chest.
"I think he has your eyes," Kaelen whispered, gazing down at Rhys with an expression I'd never seen before—wonder mixed with such fierce protectiveness it made my heart ache.
"It's too early to tell," I replied, adjusting myself against the pillows. My body felt strangely hollow after carrying Rhys for nine months, yet somehow lighter. "Besides, all babies have blue eyes at birth."
"Not this one," Kaelen insisted, bringing our son closer so I could see. "Look closer."
