Chapter 33 - Chapter 38 – Crossroads

The dawn light seeped cautiously through the grime-smeared windows of the safe house, casting long shadows across the battered furniture and tired faces. The siege had passed, but the war within was only beginning. Selene sat alone at the worn wooden table, her thoughts tangled like the city's maze outside. Cassandra's words echoed in her mind — betrayals, secret weapons, and a shadow network that could crush everything they fought for.

Her team was fractured, and so was she.

Lina's soft footsteps broke the silence as she approached, carrying a tablet loaded with the latest data.

"Selene," she said quietly, "I've cross-referenced Cassandra's intel with what we have. Some of it checks out — there's definitely a hidden cell operating inside the city's power grid."

Selene nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. "That explains the blackout during the siege. They control the infrastructure. We were blind before they struck."

Lina looked up, eyes serious. "We need to hit them where it hurts. If we take out their grid cell, it could cripple Harrow's operations for weeks."

Selene leaned back, rubbing her temples. "But it's a suicide mission. Their security is tight. We'll need a plan — and a sacrifice."

The room grew heavier as Calder and Marrow entered, their faces grim.

Calder's injured arm hung in a sling, but his voice was firm. "We can't wait. Harrow's moving faster than we thought. If we don't act soon, they'll gain complete control."

Marrow added, "We're fractured, sure. But this mission could bring us back together — or break us for good."

Selene met their gazes, the weight of leadership settling like a stone on her chest.

"Then this is our crossroads," she said finally. "We either fight smarter, or we lose everything."

Plans were drawn, roles assigned. Selene and Marrow would lead the strike team, infiltrating the power grid's nerve center. Calder and Lina would provide remote support and handle extraction logistics. Cassandra's role was the wild card — a bargaining chip, a source of vital intel, and a potential threat.

Selene's fingers trembled slightly as she considered Cassandra's possible betrayal.

That night, under a cloak of darkness, the strike team moved out. The city's streets were deserted, save for the occasional flicker of neon signs and the distant hum of generators.

Selene's heart pounded in her chest as they approached the target — a nondescript building housing the hidden grid cell.

Every step forward was a step into the unknown.

Inside, the team navigated labyrinthine corridors, disabling security systems with Lina's guidance over comms.

Marrow's keen eyes caught a glint of movement — guards.

A firefight erupted, gunfire echoing off cold concrete walls.

Selene ducked behind cover, returning fire with precise bursts.

The battle was fierce but brief. The guards fell, and the team pressed deeper.

Finally, they reached the control room.

Lina's voice crackled urgently. "I'm hacking in. Give me five minutes."

Selene's eyes flicked to the clock. Time was their enemy.

Suddenly, an alarm blared.

"Trap," Marrow hissed. "We've been compromised."

The safe house was not the only one watching.

Harrow had anticipated their move.

Outside, reinforcements surged forward.

Selene's mind raced. They were surrounded.

The team prepared for a desperate last stand.

In the chaos, Selene's thoughts flashed to Cassandra.

Had the lieutenant betrayed them? Was this another layer in Harrow's web?

She clenched her fists, refusing to give in to doubt.

"Hold your ground," Selene commanded. "We fight for every second."

Bullets ripped through the room as Lina's fingers danced over the keyboard.

With a final keystroke, the grid cell shut down — the power flickered and died.

For a moment, silence fell.

Then the sounds of retreating footsteps.

The mission was a success.

But the victory was bittersweet.

Back at the safe house, Selene faced the team.

"We survived," she said, voice steady. "But this war is far from over."

They all understood.

The crossroads had been crossed.

And their path was set — through shadows deeper than before.
