Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

I walked calmly through the woods on my way back home. I had just finished picking the herbs I needed to stalk up on for my latest rescue. That's when I noticed I had found myself in a flower patch. Such lovely wildflowers grew of all kinds. I noticed a small rose bush next to a tree. It had radiant red flowers. They were finally in bloom. I decided I can spare a few minutes and made my way through the decently tall grass and flowers.

I kneeled down, cloak getting in my way so I had to adjust it. I felt a little stuffy too with the sunlight beating down on my black coat even with the trees blocking out most of its rays. I couldn't remove my hood however because I had recently cut my hair and didn't want my neck exposed to the sun. Even though I could be out in the sunlight, it still makes my skin feel prickly with too much exposure.

After thinking for a moment I decided it was a good idea to have a flower to liven up my small cabin a bit. I reach into the bush to grab a particularly stunning rose when I felt the expected stab of its sharp thorns against my finger. I hiss a little in pain but pick it anyway and set it gently in the open basket with the other herbs. I looked down at my finger to see a cut bleeding a bit. I signed and focused. Within seconds it had sealed completely. I lean down and lick up the blood. With the scent of my blood gone I was suddenly able to catch another scent. The scent of a human. After all I did to scare the villagers from entering my forest some random person, from the clumsy steps I heard probably a kid, was going in my forest. I hate interacting with humans but I have to go run them out.

I stand up and make sure my mask is on properly. It was a wooden mask well carved into a circle. It had only one eye spot carved in the right spot and had a scratch carved into the cheek from a past incident. There was a mark on the forehead like a hook with a diamond in the hooks loop but it was almost always covered by my long, blonde curls. The mask was strapped by being tied securely around my head. I was in all black because that made it easier to move around at night and because I didn't have many clothes. I had on a black cloak and black gloves along with black boots.

I carefully and quietly made my way towards where my sensitive hearing heard the clumsy child. When I got there I hid behind a tree and assessed the scene. It was a young boy maybe 17 years old. He was rather skinny for his height, his body not overly thin but not quite plump enough to be considered well fed. He had soft brown hair that was a mess and green eyes. More noticably however he was gripping his arm and running weakly. He kept jerking his head back as if looking for something but before he got much farther he tripped on a tree root and made a weak cry out as if not wanting to be heard but unable to contain the pain. I hesitated, not really wanting to help a human but he didn't exactly look like a threat curled up in pain and exhaustion on the ground. It didn't exactly feel good watching a child cry quietly on the ground.

I made my mind up quickly however when I heard another form of footsteps thumping not too far away. Without thinking I used my super speed and strength and picked up the kid before hiding him behind a tree. Curious of who it was I peeked from behind it to see who would be chasing this kid down.

After the footsteps got closer I saw a man emerge. He was slightly old in his 50-60s. I could smell his blood was ill. His body was heavily containing traces of alcohol and cigarettes. It was sickening and I couldn't help but scowl behind my mask. Even from here I could smell the man all over the now unconscious boy. It was revolting. The man stopped a ways away and looked around angrily before shouting. "Damn mutt! You think you can run from me?! Fine then! Go get eaten by that damn monster then!" He stormed off angrily.

I glanced down at the kids slumped form. I kneeled down to assess the situation. I was used to smelling animal blood but dang was his blood so much more intoxicating. I took a moment to gather myself before more carefully picking him up. In his short sleeve shirt I could tell his arms were bruised, a new one forming where he was holding before. I stared at his face a moment before using my free hard to wipe away his tears. I swiftly move through the trees towards my home. Great. Now I have a human child to take care of.
