I jerked away from Rhys as if burned, my body responding before my brain could even process the situation fully. What the hell was he doing out here? And why had he been holding me while I sobbed my heart out?

"What are you doing?" I demanded, hastily wiping the remaining tears from my face with the back of my hand.

Rhys didn't move closer, his expression frustratingly neutral as he leaned against the balcony railing. "You were crying," he said simply, as if that explained everything.

The cool night air chilled the damp trails on my cheeks, and I felt exposed, vulnerable. I'd just poured my heart out about my father, my mother's new marriage—all to the last person on earth I wanted to see my weakness.

"So you decided to, what? Comfort me?" I let out a bitter laugh. "That's rich coming from you."
