The edges of the file crumpled under the force of Kyle’s simmering irritation. The document seemed to mock him as it provided more questions than answers.
Paul watched with caution befitting someone who had encountered a bear in the woods before finally mustering the courage to speak. “Chief, out of curiosity—”
“If you are about to waste my time, do not bother,” Kyle cut in sharply.
Undeterred, Paul pressed on. “Is it true, by any chance, that you are, uh… entangled with Baroness Aiselle?”
“And if I am?” Kyle grumbled in an unbidden reaction, realizing his mistake too late as he watched Paul’s confusion morph into shock.
“Is it true, then? Heavens, the minister really does have a keen eye for this kind of thing, I suppose,” Paul mused.
“Keep quiet about this in the capital, Paul,” Kyle warned.
“You even failed to deny it!” Paul exclaimed, his voice rising in disbelief.
