"Hmph! You little brat, and here you are trying to get your hands on my weapon."
"Just borrowing it for a bit. I'll return it soon."
Gekko Chizan handed the twin blades to Obito, who immediately lit up with excitement. Who cared about the details? He just wanted to try them out.
But just as he was about to swing them, Yamoryū spoke up.
"Brat, if you dare let that lightning hit me, I swear—I'll swallow you whole."
"Not even Gekko Chizan will be able to save you. That's a promise."
That low, threatening hiss, along with the sound of flicking tongue, sent a chill down Uchiha Obito's spine, making Rin stifle a giggle nearby.
"Hey, hey, hey, can't I just aim the lightning at the sky?"
"I promise it won't touch you! I swear!"
Pointing the twin blades toward the heavens, Obito poured chakra into them, and instantly, a bolt of lightning flashed.
"Crack!"
The thunderous sound echoed, and Obito was thrilled.
"Amazing! Real lightning actually appeared!"
"Crack!"
Obito gripped the twin blades, playing with them excitedly. Gekko Chizan, watching from the side, was getting a little tempted himself and quickly interrupted.
"Hey, Obito, let me give it a try."
"Huh? But I'm not done yet, Chizan-sensei!"
Snatching the Lightning Blades back, Gekko Chizan also looked eager—he wanted to feel the thrill of wielding lightning himself.
"Thunder, come!"
With a loud shout, Gekko Chizan channeled chakra into the blades, and lightning immediately erupted.
And the lightning that emerged was thick and intense—clearly stronger than the ones Obito had just unleashed.
Seeing this, Rin couldn't help but laugh and say:
"Obito, you really can't compare to Chizan-sensei. Just look at the lightning you produced, and then look at his. Totally different level."
Obito stared longingly at the thick bolts of lightning. He looked completely dejected.
Gekko Chizan was enjoying himself immensely, but soon, a hint of confusion appeared on his face.
He put the twin blades away and asked Obito a question.
"Obito, when you used this blade, did you just inject chakra directly?"
"Was the consumption high?"
Though a bit puzzled, Obito nodded.
"Isn't it a lightning blade? I just converted my chakra into lightning and infused it into the blades. The cost wasn't too high. Why do you ask, Chizan-sensei?"
Hearing that, Gekko Chizan furrowed his brow slightly, but then relaxed.
His expression changed so quickly it was like he had turned into a different person. Both Obito and Rin were very curious.
"Chizan-sensei, what's wrong?"
Gekko Chizan shook his head and explained what he had realized.
"Even though this is a ninja blade, it still has certain requirements."
"When I tried injecting chakra directly, the consumption was massive."
"But then I thought it through and figured it out."
"If you inject lightning-natured chakra, the consumption is very low. But if you don't have lightning-natured chakra and instead inject another element, the blade will forcibly convert it into lightning. That process is what eats up so much chakra."
"Rin, your elements are water and fire. Try it out."
Rin nodded, then grabbed the ninja blade and, in the next second, swung it toward the sky.
Lightning appeared. Though clearly weaker in power, it still had some presence.
However, after just a few swings, Rin's expression turned serious. She slowly lowered the blade, breathing a little heavily.
"Sensei, you're absolutely right. I don't have lightning-natured chakra."
"After just a few swings, I already feel like I've burned through almost half my chakra."
Seeing Rin's slightly pale face, Gekko Chizan took the Lightning Blades back with a sigh.
He had just thought it through and realized it matched his suspicions exactly.
He originally assumed that anyone could use this blade, and that it was just a matter of proficiency. But now it was clear that wasn't the case.
Still, thinking back, it made sense. If only lightning-natured users could wield it, then Mangetsu Hōzuki shouldn't have been able to use it—but he was proficient with all seven swords, including Lightning Blades.
So now it was clear: just because you can use it doesn't mean it doesn't come with a cost.
"Whatever. Having them is good enough. If it's too much, I'll just give one to Kakashi and one to Obito. Let the two of you handle them."
"Ah, seems I'll just have to live with my tragic lack of the lightning element in my nature."
Obito's eyes instantly lit up at the thought of owning one.
Sensing that sparkle in his eyes, Gekko Chizan let out a long, helpless sigh.
"Yamoryū, speed up. Let's get this over with quickly."
Yamoryū chuckled at the resigned tone in his voice, and her massive body immediately picked up speed.
Meanwhile, upon receiving Yamoryū's message, Kakashi changed course and headed southeast.
Before long, Gekko Chizan's group arrived at a position slightly south of due east.
Unlike the southern terrain, the eastern forests of the Land of Fire were dense and lush.
"Yamoryū, do you have a precise location?"
"I do. There's a waterfall on the southern edge of the forest—they're stationed near it."
Hearing the word "waterfall," Gekko Chizan's brow creased.
"Another fight where the terrain favors the enemy... A waterfall, huh. Annoying."
"Thanks, Yamoryū. Leave the rest to us."
Yamoryū nodded. After all, a dense forest wasn't suitable for someone of her size—the risk of exposure was too high.
With a puff of white smoke, Yamoryū vanished.
Gekko Chizan led Obito and Rin to a more concealed area for a short rest.
"Chizan-sensei, are the Kirigakure ninja in this forest?"
"Let's just go wipe them out now!"
Obito was already fired up again, itching for a fight.
But Chizan immediately pinned him to the ground.
"You little brat, we just finished a battle and I'm exhausted. Can't you let me rest for a bit?"
"Go leave a mark. When Kakashi arrives, we'll strike."
With that, Gekko Chizan released Obito and walked over to a tree to rest beneath it.
The moonlight had not yet faded. Gekko Chizan closed his eyes, entering a meditative state. Obito was clearly unwilling, but still obediently went to leave signs for Kakashi.
Rin went to help him.
Sensing the movements of his two disciples, Gekko Chizan's lips curled up slightly.
"Chōmei, what do you think of these two disciples of mine?"
"They're alright. No need to even mention the Uchiha—his talent's obvious. But that little girl... hmm, she's quite something."
"Good eye. Rin has real potential. Once we're back, I'll recommend her to Tsunade and have her guide Rin personally."
When it came to medical ninjutsu, no one could surpass Tsunade. She was the peak of the field. With her help, Rin was bound to grow significantly.
