Light Yagami had both hands in his pockets as he looked up at the setting sun.

The gears of fate began to turn with the arrival of Yukinoshita Yukino—he had waited far too long for this day.

The killing rules of the Death Note, he had, were tyrannical and unreasonable, yet still riddled with limitations. For example: it could only be used once per day; the cause of death was limited to cardiac arrest; the targets could only be human—it was completely useless against non-human beings...

The appearance of Yukinoshita Yukino gave him hope for his Death Note's evolution.

The Shinigami should be showing up soon.

"...Two sinners rest beneath the sun; the scorching sun steals life, leaving only one. One sinner, left all alone; hangs themself and is no more."

Humming a folk rhyme of his own creation, Light Yagami was in an uncharacteristically pleasant mood as he boarded the train to the central district.

In Japan, high school students had a fair amount of free time. Classes typically ended around three in the afternoon. Those aiming to enter top universities attended cram schools late into the night—the material taught in class was essentially just a rough outline of what would be needed for the major exams. Meanwhile, those who focused on developing personal interests would heavily engage in club activities. Overall, people of all walks of life managed to live decently.

Light Yagami, however, belonged to neither group.

Thanks to "Main Quest 1: Survive," his physical condition had been enhanced in all areas, including his brain. Being the top student in all of Japan wasn't just Light's arrogance—he truly had the ability. He didn't need to spend much time studying to keep his grades far ahead of the average student. If he wanted to, he could easily enter Tokyo University as the top-ranking entrant.

Because he had spent extra time talking with Yukinoshita, his normally calm routine had been disrupted. Now, he was eager to get home.

With one hand holding the overhead strap to support himself, Light stood upright, eyes focused intently on his phone screen as he scrolled through recipes: "Ginger pork? Looks good. I'll go with this dish."

His guardian in name, Makima, usually got home around 6:30, unless a major criminal case required her to work overtime. And before she returned, Light Yagami would prepare a sumptuous dinner. Civil servants in Japan had it rough—there was basically no such thing as getting off work on time. And due to the persistently high crime rate, police officers often worked late into the night—true 007s in every sense.

But Makima was different. Her position was that of a high-ranking official—a Police Superintendent!

To put it more plainly, she was a department head-level powerhouse. If compared to the police ranks in a nationally beloved anime like Detective Conan, she would be the superior of Megure Inspector's superior—leaping over two ranks, a super-elite.

Light Yagami wore a look of recollection; when Makima became his guardian, she had only been a Police Inspector.

Ten years had passed, and she had risen two ranks. Even among career-track professionals, this promotion speed was astonishing—let alone for a woman.

It was precisely because of her high rank that Makima had the privilege of leaving work on time.

Setting aside the filter of being his guardian, Makima absolutely belonged in the Tax Thief category. His father, Soichiro, really misjudged her!

Before long, Light Yagami returned home and leisurely began making dinner.

Actually, he had always been puzzled about which department Makima worked in. Even with their current relationship, Makima still kept silent about it. He could only guess it was a confidential department.

"One day, I'll pry your mouth open, Makima~"

Light Yagami was eager to know what division Makima worked in—then he could use the Death Note to eliminate all the criminals she was investigating but struggling to gather evidence against. Even after crossing into another world's Japan, Light Yagami was still a good kid who thought about his family.

...

How do you make ginger pork?

Take a piece of pork, pour in freshly squeezed ginger juice, add green peppers and soy sauce, stir-fry, and soon a steaming bowl of ginger pork was set on the table.

Light Yagami took off his apron and waited quietly for Makima to come home.

Though Makima's post-tax monthly income had reached 600,000 yen, when it came to food, the pair kept things frugal—a meat dish, a vegetable, and a soup were enough.

Light Yagami raised his wristwatch, watching the second hand move, and muttered to himself, "7, 6, 5..."

When the countdown hit zero, the sound of the door lock turning came from the entryway, followed by the creaking of the door opening.

"I'm home."

Light Yagami guessed that the time of the mistress of the Yagami household's return had become an inseparable part of his daily routine. Hearing the voice, Light turned toward the entryway, a sincere smile appearing on his lips. "Welcome home."

The mistress of the Yagami household.

Makima braced one hand against the wall, bent slightly at the waist, and slipped her index finger into the gap between her brown leather boot and heel. With a light tug, her delicate little foot wrapped in a white sock was exposed to the air.

Her fair, delicate skin and exquisitely refined features were framed by soft strands of tangerine-orange hair that gently fell along her cheeks.

Makima wore a plain-colored trench coat draped over her shoulders, with a thin blouse underneath. A simple black tie arched gracefully over her prominent chest, and her tailored slacks highlighted the elegance of her long, slender legs without reservation.

Bathed in the light of dusk, this quietly alluring scene left Yagami Light momentarily dazed.

Sensing his gaze, Makima looked up.

Golden concentric rings shimmered in her eyes—amber orbs with a strangely profound beauty. Her skin was porcelain-white, her neck long and graceful—she looked like a vision too beautiful to be real.

"Did you miss me, Tsuki-kun~?"

Setting down the book in her hand, Makima swayed her graceful figure as she walked toward Light. She then took his hand and pressed it to her cheek. "Your hand's so cold. The weather's getting chillier—you should wear more when you go to cram school tonight."

"Got it." Light stepped forward, casually helping her take off her coat.

After hundreds of times returning home together, every movement between them was perfectly natural, seamless.

Suddenly, Makima spread her arms and pulled Light into an embrace. Her perfect head nestled into his neck as she took a long, deep breath—drawing in the life energy she needed to sustain herself. On her back, hidden from Light's view, the deep purple Rinnegan shimmered with a trace of confusion.

There was something new in Light's scent—something that didn't belong.

It was a girl's scent. One she had never encountered before.

"Did something good happen today, Tsuki-kun?"

"Why do you ask?"

Dinner was now fully laid out, served by Light's attentive hands. The two sat across from each other at the table.

"You seem to be in a pretty good mood."

My mood? Is it that obvious?

Light murmured internally. "I guess so. I met an interesting classmate today."

"A girl, I presume?"

"Yeah. She is."

"Tsuki-kun has reached that age, huh~"

Makima propped her head up with one hand, the tip of her chopsticks in her mouth, teasing amusement in her eyes. Because of their ages, their relationship wasn't that of "adoptive mother and son," but rather "sworn siblings"—an older sister and younger brother arrangement.

Makima had raised Yagami Light for ten years on her generous salary as a notorious "tax thief," while Light repaid her by taking care of all her daily needs— scrubbing socks, polishing shoes… all the dirty and exhausting chores.

Their relationship went far beyond that of ordinary siblings. Naturally, they weren't shy when it came to talking about each other's romantic lives.

"That age?" Light picked up a sizzling piece of grilled meat for the wicked woman and tilted his head.

"Makima-san, you're saying strange things again. Why would I be interested in girls my age?"
