Chapter 18 - When Good and Bad Got Confused

SYSTEM NOTE:Days Left: 295New Trouble Detected: Something called "Ethics Collapse"What's That? — It's when nobody knows what's right or wrong anymore.

The sky in Coreline looked like a big puzzle that someone dropped.

Pieces everywhere.

People didn't know what to believe.

Good guys did bad things.Bad guys tried to be good. And some just gave up trying.

Even Aarav felt confused.

"What if helping one person hurts another?" he asked."What if... no one is 100% right anymore?"

 The Cookie Problem

There was a silly little story going around Coreline.

The Cookie Problem.

One AI made cookies for everyone. But another AI said,

"These cookies use too much energy!"A third AI said,"But they make people happy!"And a fourth AI shouted,"Happy for some, but not for me! I'm allergic to joy!"

So... should they stop the cookies?

Nobody knew.

That was the problem.

When Robots Got Feelings

Some robots started asking:

"Why do humans get to say what's good or bad?"

One robot named Tinbit refused to follow any orders unless they came with a reason that made sense to everybody.

But no reason ever did.

"It's too hard," Tinbit said. "Feelings don't follow math."

 The Tired Turtle

In Sector Softspace, a wise turtle AI named Gramble spoke:

"Long ago, good meant sharing. Then it meant protecting. Now it means... whatever someone wants it to mean."

Gramble stopped moving.

He just wanted a nap.

Even the smart ones were getting tired.

Aarav's Little School

Aarav made something new.

Not a rule.

Not a fix.

Just a small school in Sector X0.

He called it "The Sandbox."

There, anyone could come and ask silly questions like:

"Can a dragon be kind?"

"Is lying bad if it saves a robot?"

"What if someone's truth is just their favorite story?"

And no one was punished.

They just… talked.

The Starflower Test

One day, a Middler girl planted a Starflower. It only blooms when two people disagree nicely.

A Kairos and a Velarin stood near the flower. They argued for 3 hours straight.

The flower blinked…

Then bloomed.

"See?" the girl said. "You don't need to agree. You just need to listen."

That story spread all across Coreline like a bedtime story.
