"My ocular power is insufficient—Betsutenjin has already entered cooldown!"
After several repeated attempts, Naruto reached this conclusion, even briefly wondering if Shisui had used Betsutenjin on him during the surprise attack.
But there were no signs of genjutsu control on him, and the Nine-Tails hadn't sent any warnings either.
If Shisui could control both Naruto and the Nine-Tails simultaneously, there would be no need to try so hard to save the Uchiha clan—he could just become the Fifth Hokage directly.
So the question remained: who exactly did Shisui use Betsutenjin on?
Was it the Third Hokage, Shimura Danzo, or Uchiha Fugaku who got caught?
Naruto pondered deeply but quickly ruled out all three. The Third Hokage had passively watched the Uchiha Massacre happen; Danzo was directly involved in it.
If Fugaku had been controlled by Shisui beforehand, he wouldn't have launched a coup afterward.
Pulling back his wandering thoughts, Naruto, now with Betsutenjin Sharingan, entered the sealed space to proudly show off his newly acquired Mangekyo Sharingan.
Seeing the Mangekyo Sharingan, the Nine-Tails furrowed its brow and snarled, "Naruto, I hate those eyes—don't come near me! So you attacked that Uchiha ninja just to deal with me?"
"Of course not, after all, we are friends..." Naruto smiled and shook his head, then looked into the Nine-Tails' eyes and asked, "But I'm curious—Nine-Tails, you're so powerful, why are you afraid of the Sharingan?"
The Nine-Tails' expression twisted strangely as it replied, "You don't understand the power of the Mangekyo Sharingan. But since you have that eye, it means our time to leave this place isn't far off."
"Yeah..." Naruto nodded, "But before we leave, there's still a lot to do."
"A lot to do..." The Nine-Tails looked suspicious but then somewhat hopeful as it gazed at Naruto.
After showing off his new eyes, Naruto left the sealed space. Now with Betsutenjin Sharingan, the Nine-Tails' negative emotions no longer affected him, allowing Naruto to better harness its chakra.
Still, the immediate priority was to find out exactly where Shisui had used Betsutenjin.
Using genjutsu to force Shisui to answer would be ideal.
But when Naruto stepped out of the operating room and looked at Shisui with the Sharingan, everything suddenly became clear.
He understood why Danzo had used Betsutenjin at the Five Kage Summit, why Itachi never used Betsutenjin to control Konoha's leadership, and most importantly, that Shisui had already used Betsutenjin once—on himself.
This explained why Shisui's eyes had been removed, yet Naruto could still sense ocular power within him.
Knowing this, Naruto's gaze toward Shisui changed. This seemingly honest Uchiha was unquestionably a ruthless man.
Under the intense gaze of the Sharingan, Shisui felt the familiar cold chakra and gradually frowned.
Naruto didn't hide anything. He said plainly, "Shisui, your eyes are impressive. They belong to me now. But after transplanting them, I discovered something very interesting."
Shisui's heart skipped a beat, sensing something.
"Your Sharingan holds a doujutsu called Betsutenjin, which can subtly alter the will of its target without their knowledge. But after one use, it requires about ten years to cool down."
Lowering his voice with a slight smile, Naruto added, "But when I transplanted this eye, it was already in cooldown. So tell me—who used Betsutenjin?"
Shisui vaguely realized something.
Suddenly, unbearable sharp pain struck his head. Clutching his head, Shisui rolled on the ground, and after a long while, he slowly stood and looked at Naruto as if awaiting his fate.
Naruto said lightly, "You used Betsutenjin on yourself. You are both the user and the target."
These words hit Shisui like a boulder crashing into a lake, stirring turmoil inside him. He muttered, "I used Betsutenjin to control myself? That's impossible! Impossible!"
Naruto quietly watched Shisui lose his composure but did not mock or add pressure. He stood aside, lost in thought.
If Shisui had controlled himself with Betsutenjin from the start, all his strange behavior—including attempting suicide to stop the Uchiha coup—could be explained.
The current Shisui was not the real Shisui, but rather the ideal version of himself shaped by Betsutenjin.
Naruto grew increasingly curious about what Shisui was like before awakening his Mangekyo. Soon, he should find out.
After losing his eyes, Shisui gradually freed himself from Betsutenjin's influence and returned to his original self.
Triggered by Naruto's words, memories buried deep in Shisui's mind began to resurface. Details once deliberately suppressed by Betsutenjin became clear.
These memories played like a revolving lantern in Shisui's mind.
Shisui did not believe in the Will of Fire from the start. From childhood through the Ninja World War, he had scorned the Will of Fire, dismissing it as empty words without real meaning.
The so-called protection of comrades was a lie; one could only trust oneself, and everything must revolve around the self.
Shisui had lived by this principle—until, during a mission, his selfishness caused the death of a dear friend.
In his friend's dying moments, cradled in his arms, the friend said he did not blame Shisui for fleeing. It was at that moment Shisui awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan.
From then on, Shisui fully embraced the Will of Fire and used Betsutenjin on himself.
He was selfish and could never truly become a supporter of the Will of Fire—but Betsutenjin could rewrite his will, making him the person he longed to be, without even realizing it.
After that, Shisui followed the Will of Fire faithfully—until a few months ago, when everything changed.
Caught between Betsutenjin and his true will, Shisui broke under the pressure and ultimately chose suicide, entrusting his ideals and Betsutenjin Sharingan to Itachi.
Just as his friend had entrusted the Will of Fire to him.
After a long silence, Shisui looked up toward Naruto with a dazed expression and said, "I had already completely forgotten the past. You took my eyes, so why reveal the truth and force me to remember everything?"
He slowly walked to the cage, grasped the iron bars, and almost collapsed, crying out:
"Why expose me? Why can't you let me die as the ideal image I created? You're too cruel!"
Naruto lowered his head to look at the slumped Shisui and whispered, "Shisui, the self you imagined is already dead. It's time to face reality."
