Celine came back from the space and returned to the car. Mateo was holding her phone, answering a call.
His eyebrows were tightly knit, lips pressed down, and his whole expression looked serious, like something bad was coming.
Celine mouthed silently, "What happened?"
Mateo didn't speak. He turned on the speakerphone.
"I'm talking to you. Who are you? Why do you have Celine's phone?"
"Tell Celine to pick up the phone. If she doesn't, she's going to be sorry!"
Lorenzo's angry voice filled the car.
Celine was stunned.
Wasn't Lorenzo already taken away by the police?
How was he calling her?
Actually, Lorenzo was supposed to be held in custody.
When he was brought to the police station, they told him he would be detained for five days for disturbing public order. The fear hit him like a wave.
He panicked.
He couldn't be detained. He still wanted to chase Vanissa. He couldn't have a bad record.
"Officer, I didn't mean to do it!" Lorenzo cried, tears and snot covering his face.
"I came to ask for her hand in marriage. Her family asked for a huge bride price, and when I didn't agree, they threw me into the mountains."
"I bought a train ticket to go back and gather the money, but my phone and wallet were stolen."
"I was under a lot of pressure and lost control. I swear I won't do it again."
Lorenzo made up the story, exaggerating as much as he could, trying to sound pitiful.
Then he quickly offered to pay for the stolen phone and medical expenses. He even said he was willing to pay extra, just so they wouldn't push the case any further.
The police saw that he looked sorry and was willing to pay, so they didn't dig deeper.
They gave him a lecture and helped him get a temporary ID.
Lorenzo walked out of the police station holding his brand-new temporary ID card. But he didn't feel any relief. Instead, he was full of burning anger.
He felt everything was Celine's fault.
If she hadn't forced him to go with her and her limping brother to the provincial city, he wouldn't have ended up in this mess.
What made him even more furious was that he originally went to ask Celine for money, but now he had lost a lot himself.
He was good-looking and graduated from a top university. Many girls liked him, but he didn't accept any of them. Instead, he dated Celine.
Even if he didn't want to be with Celine anymore, he still wanted to get some money from her. At least she should pay him back for the time and energy he had wasted on her.
After all, he had spent money during their two to three years of dating.
Thinking of this made Lorenzo feel even more upset.
With a dark expression, he went to the bank, withdrew some cash, paid the victim he had injured, then quickly bought a new phone and got a new SIM card.
Once everything was ready, the first thing he did was call Celine.
He wanted money.
He wanted to get a big amount from her.
But to his surprise, a man answered the call.
At that moment, Lorenzo felt more excited than angry.
It was like he had found the perfect excuse. A great reason.
Now he had a perfect way to ask Celine for money.
He immediately acted furious and shouted at the man on the phone, Mateo.
"Are you the guy Celine is seeing behind my back?"
"Wow, you two are cheating on me? This isn't over."
After saying that, a twisted and ugly smile appeared on Lorenzo's face.
Too bad he couldn't see himself. If he could, he would've praised his acting skills and cheered for himself in his heart.
