Chapter 6 - CODE OF SHADOWS

The silence in the safehouse was louder than any explosion.

Elena stared at the flickering surveillance screen, its light casting cold shadows across the bruises on her cheek. Nicholas stood behind her, arms crossed, jaw clenched—not in anger, but in restraint. Every muscle in his body seemed wired to tension, like a man standing on a ledge, waiting to fall or be pushed.

"She's alive," Elena whispered, her voice brittle.

"Yes," Nicholas confirmed, "and she's not the woman you remember."

He said it like a warning. Like he knew what it meant to lose someone while they were still breathing.

Elena looked up at the screen. Kate's face stared back—older, colder, dressed in black, with a presence that vibrated with authority. She wasn't hiding anymore. She was leading. Behind her stood a wall of masked figures—ARCHANGEL operatives. Her sister wasn't lost.

She was in command.

Elena turned toward Nicholas. "You knew."

His silence was answer enough.

"You knew she was alive. And you let me think—" Her voice cracked. "You let me suffer."

"I didn't know until tonight," he said. "And trust me… this changes everything."

She almost believed him. But not quite.

Before she could press him further, Ava stormed in, holding a phone, her face pale.

"We have a bigger problem," Ava said. "Your sister? She's about to broadcast a classified file she stole from Vale Technologies—Project MIRAGE."

Nicholas's entire demeanor shifted. "That file was sealed years ago. It's dangerous."

"To who?" Elena asked. "You?"

"To everyone," Nicholas replied. "If Kate leaks that code, it won't just bring down my company. It'll trigger a cyberwar. The AI we built—if it falls into the wrong hands, governments will burn."

For a second, the room tilted.

This wasn't just personal anymore.

Elena stepped back, heart pounding. "Are you saying Kate is the villain now?"

"No," Nicholas said. "I'm saying she doesn't know who she's really working with."

Ava tossed the phone on the table. The screen blinked to life with a countdown timer: 00:05:21.

A live stream was about to begin.

---

In an abandoned penthouse across the city, Kate stood at a sleek terminal, face lit by the glow of digital fire.

Beside her, a new character emerged—Elias Sharpe, a former Vale engineer turned whistleblower, presumed dead for years. Gaunt, eyes like razors, Elias radiated a quiet menace.

"We do this now," Elias said. "Or everything we've built falls apart."

Kate hesitated.

Elena's face had haunted her ever since she saw her on the terrace. It was supposed to be a clean break. A clean war.

No sisters. No attachments.

But nothing about this story was clean.

She reached for the terminal—then stopped.

A message pinged on her private comm line.

UNKNOWN SOURCE: "Check the mirrored files. You've been lied to."

Kate's eyes widened.

"Elias," she said slowly, "how long have you had access to MIRAGE?"

He didn't answer.

She turned to the mirrored monitor and began typing.

---

Back in the safehouse, Elena was pacing.

"What is MIRAGE exactly?" she asked.

Nicholas hesitated. Then, "It's not a weapon. It's a memory—an AI construct built to simulate and manipulate human emotion at scale. It was supposed to be therapeutic."

"But?"

"But someone reprogrammed it," he admitted. "Kate stumbled on that. And then she vanished."

"And now?" Elena pressed.

"Now," Ava said grimly, "she's walking into the same trap."

Suddenly, the surveillance feed crackled.

Nicholas's security firewall went down.

Elena looked at him. "What's happening?"

He met her eyes, voice flat. "Someone just breached our system. From the inside."

Ava paled. "We've been compromised."

Then the screen blinked—and a new face filled the monitor.

Kate.

But not the version Elena remembered.

This Kate looked directly into the camera, her voice steady.

"To the people watching: what you're about to see is the truth your leaders never wanted you to find. Project MIRAGE was never about saving lives—it was about controlling them. This ends now."

Nicholas reached for the kill switch.

Too late.

The file began to upload.

And then—static.

The screen went dark.

A gunshot echoed down the hallway.

Everyone froze.

Ava ran for the door, gun drawn. Nicholas pulled Elena behind him.

They weren't alone anymore.

---

Elena's breath came in short gasps as the lights went out. Emergency backup kicked in, dim and blood-red. Footsteps thundered above.

"They found us," Nicholas muttered.

"Who?" Elena asked.

"The people who want MIRAGE to stay buried," he said grimly. "And they're not just after me anymore."

A crash shattered the window.

Smoke grenades. Gas.

"Run!" Ava shouted.

Nicholas grabbed Elena's hand. "This way!"

As they bolted through the hidden corridor, Elena's ears rang with gunfire and the distant echo of Kate's voice.

She didn't know who to trust.

She didn't even know who the real enemy was anymore.

---

They burst into the alley behind the safehouse. A black SUV waited, engine running. Ava jumped into the driver's seat.

Elena looked back—just for a second.

And saw her.

Kate.

Standing on the rooftop.

Alone. Staring down at her.

Their eyes met—one last time.

And then Kate whispered something Elena couldn't hear… before she turned and vanished into the smoke.
