Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Maps Acquired

Carnes ended up placing the devil fruit in his Kamui's dimension as he didn't want it to take up a slot of his inventory after all why would he quickly switch to a devil fruit.

Did he want to die and explode with the enemy?

Since Carnes didn't have a chest he simply placed the devil fruit in the opposite corner of his growing treasure pile, he didn't want the devil to be buried.

Now Carnes had another problem, he had to sell around eleven stacks of charcoal to clear up his inventory before he went shopping for essentials.

He wasted time by eating at a luxurious place where the bill at the end was almost 20,000 berries!

He ate caviar, East Blue Tuna, and some other exotic names that he couldn't remember but that taste was definitely heavenly.

But knowing that he had almost 1,000,000 berries in cash, he felt this was some chump change.

'Shit not like I know how much these berries are in dollars.'

As Carnes continued walking through town using a pick to clean his teeth, he saw a store with a sign in the front showing a compass.

Carnes continued walking as his head was still fixed on the sign, as if he needed to remember something.

His body did an awkward turn when he finally realized that this store probably had maps and compasses.

'Compasses when combined with a map would show your location and your other players location. I wonder how it'll work here.'

Carnes entered the store, and in front of the store was a middle aged man, 'definitely a sailor.'

The middle aged, excited to see a customer, quickly started to advertise his items, "Young man interested in the sea! These are compasses I made after learning how to make them in my travels.

Over here we have maps that I recorded, also on my travels across the East Blue.

And this here is my personal record of my navigation experience here in the East Blue.

Not only that, I have some trinkets here from other islands."

Carnes didn't want to waste his cut off the middle aged man when he started to ramble about the items from other islands, "Middle aged man just give me all the different maps you got along with a compass."

The middle aged man quickly responded with berry signs in his eyes, "Valuable customer, for all the different maps I have and a compass it will be around 100,000 berries.

If you're buying maps and a compass, perhaps you would like to learn about my experiences so you don't repeat them."

"I don't need it, just hand over the maps and my compass." replied Carnes, his hands fidgety.

Once the old man handed over sixteen different maps and compass Carnes paid the man.

But Carnes was disappointed as one of the maps was Red Leaf town, but the second map was about LogueTown!

The third and fourth map was about the Conomi Isles and Oykot Kingdom, the fifth was Evergreen Kingdom, the sixth was a town called Neko for its many cats, the seventh was Kuma Kingdom famous for its exports of bear fur.

The eighth map was about Orange Town, the ninth map was about Goa Kingdom.

The tenth showed Syrup Village as part of another Isle called Maple Isle, with various other villages nearby.

The eleventh showed Isles located near the calm belt, as the town and Isles there were fortified by the Marines.

It was a good location to go due to the items the Marines would receive from Pirates trying to exit Paradise or at least those that tried.

The twelfth map showed a map of Wolf Kingdom, the kingdom building the Tequila Wolf.

The thirteenth map showed another clockwork island.

The fourteenth map was Hotaru Town as there were various fireflies on the island.

Fifteenth & sixteenth map was on Carpe Kingdom, and its vassal islands Hebi Island and Chestnut Island.

The maps didn't have much on them, just various landmarks where the town/kingdoms are and the islands you would find on your way to those settlements.

If anything these maps have just introduced at least over fifty islands, a large number that's mostly contributed by Isles.

"Say you've been to quite a lot of places, have you perhaps sailed to the grandline?"

"I haven't," the middle aged man didn't elaborate further.

"But you've heard about it?"

"Aye I have alright I'll tell since you're so interested, my captain received a request for transporting some cargo to the grandline when we were in LogueTown.

Interest because of all the stories of the grandline he accepted but that sea it was bizarre like it was out to get you.

I swear on my life the sea seems as if it wanted to drag you to the bottom of the sea." The middle age stopped gathering his thoughts and reining his emotions,

"That trip we completed but to sudden weather changes some of the crew fell off board, and as for pirates although we were used to attack, the ones there were special, we were being cut down left to right.

When Bert, a crew member, huge bulky, decided to tackle the man taking him down to sea with him.

Luckily that guy didn't come back up, but neither did Bert. We completed the request and returned home, after that journey I retired.

I didn't map my journey, or record it as I wasn't qualified to, I didn't know how to make sense of it."

"So not a single map?" asked Carnes.

The middle aged man sighed, "I do but it's not for sale, although I don't wish to remember that journey I couldn't but feel that I needed a souvenir just to remember those who didn't return from that journey.

"Can I just take a look at it?"

"No." The middle aged man flatly denied Carnes request.

Carnes wouldn't take no for an answer so Carnes did the most reasonable thing he could do, and pestered the man hoping for a different answer.

After an hour of Carnes' pestering the man finally allowed Carnes to see and hold the map of the island they had visited on his journey to the grandline.

Carnes quickly took off his cartographer block to the amazement of the middle aged man, took the map and a blank piece of paper and made a copy of the map.

The middle aged people, seeing the carbon copy of the map, couldn't help but cry tears, 'All my hard work is for nothing?'

'All the nights, and effort into making copies of my maps a joke?'

The middle aged man quickly got out of his stupor and confronted Carnes, "Wait man, how did you do that?"

"Let's just say I'm special too. But thanks old man." Carnes waved at the man and left, after all he only had a couple of hours in the day to sell….

Carnes figured he could leave the charcoal in Kamui's space and sell it on the following island, after all he only had a few hours to find some that's stackable.

So Carnes made his way to the butcher buying some chicken, and some sausages that were stackable.

He bought some vegetable carrots, potatoes, onions, and some pieces of loaves.

For fruit he made sure to buy some oranges, and obviously some peaches going back to the same lady where he found the devil fruit.

'Shit I ended up paying twice, at least they taste pretty good.' He ended up paying around 10,000 berries for everything after all he made sure to buy the most he could for each item.

Once he was done shopping he made his way back to the dock, and climbed back up.

Seeing barely anyone on the ship he walked to the sleeping quarters and luckily no one was there, so he took out his cartographer block and merged the maps together.

He stared at his map, and zoomed out, seeing the overall location of all the islands, Carnes couldn't help but something seemed off.

None of the islands were too far north, Goa Kingdom being the farthest, in fact most seem to be cut off at a certain latitude.

'Could there be northern winter islands like Drum island. But no one inhabits them because of the snow or horrible climate.

Maybe there are villages and towns, but they are isolated due to few travelers?

But then again this could just be the travel route of the retired sailor.

It doesn't matter if the north is uninhabited or there are few people there, it simply means untouch minerals, untouched devil fruits, free land.'

"But a cold climate is good for a base, even more so I'm not willing to freeze my ass off even if it meant no pirates would come."

"Why is everything in the grand line?" muttered Carnes as he looked at his map showing Kyuka Island far south than any other island on his map.

'All it takes is a click and I'm in the grandline. I can't get lost but I don't have a safe way across the ocean.'

'I can always just hitch a ride.'

Carnes made up his mind, he got out of the sleeping quarter and walked to the Captain's and knocked on the door, but he received no response.

Carnes simply wrote briefly on a piece of paper, saying thanks for trusting a stranger, and for the journey but he had to leave.

Once he was done he slipped the note under the door, and vanished from the ship.

------------------------------------

Opening his eyes he was on the beach by the dock of Kyuka Island.

The sun is still strong despite it being late evening, in the distance he could see the various hotels, the tall umbrella tree.

There were still many people on the beach strolling around.

Kyuka Island was on the smaller scale of Island, as he instinctively mapped the Island out till it was midnight.

He recalled the island as the vacation island where the Baroque agents would go on vacation.

There was barely any trees on the islands and the few that were on the island were huge.

Carnes thought to himself, if it weren't noticeable that the tree would be gone he wondered how many logs he would receive from the trees.

Now the question that lingers is how long till I can catch a ride out of this island?
