"Could it be because of what happened last time?"
While Beth was still confused, suddenly a memory flashed in her mind.
Back when she had just moved from New York to Washington, she once showed envy toward Raymond and David, asking Raymond if there was any way to gain superpowers.
Raymond told her at the time that she might also have a chance to become a powerful psychic like the Shadow King, that all she lacked was the right trigger.
She didn't take it seriously then, thinking Raymond was only joking or trying to comfort her.
But now, as this woman Sandy mentioned psychic powers again, Raymond's words resurfaced in her mind.
"Could it be that the doctor wasn't just comforting me?" Beth felt both shocked and delighted.
She also recalled that at the last moment while dealing with the Shadow King, Raymond seemed to have shoved something into her mouth.
Maybe it was that thing which gave her the chance to become a psychic herself?
The more she thought about it, the more excited Beth became.
The idea that she might one day get to experience the thrill of being a superhero, instead of being a burden, filled her with excitement.
"This lady, whatever it is, we can talk it over. No need to make things ugly… Even if you are a strong psychic, our group 'Afterlife' isn't easy to mess with. I suggest you don't act rashly…"
The voice of Sandy, came again from below her feet. Her tone already carried a trace of surrender.
Afterlife?
Beth noticed this strange name and immediately sensed there was gossip behind it.
As a former experienced psychologist, what she was best at was getting people to talk. Earlier she had been too nervous to use her specialty, but now that she had the upper hand, she wasn't going to miss the chance for a "heart-to-heart."
With that in mind, she smiled and said, "Afterlife? Sounds powerful. Why have I never heard of it?"
Once Sandy entered Beth's mental world, both of their bodies outside closed their eyes.
Jia Ying and the eyeless man simply waited quietly without making any moves.
They believed that with Sandy's rich experience, she would soon figure out the truth about these newcomers.
"Gordon, when you caught her, no one saw you, right?" Jia Ying suddenly asked.
"My movements were very fast. Unless someone was staring right at her, they wouldn't notice. Even if they did, they'd probably think they were seeing things." The eyeless man paused. "But her companions might have noticed me. They're probably looking for her now."
"It doesn't matter. As long as not too many people saw at the same time, th—" Jia Ying shook her head.
Beep, beep-beep—
Before Jia Ying could finish, a sharp ringtone cut her off.
Her expression didn't change. She walked over to Beth's side, pulled the phone out of her pocket, glanced at the screen, then hung up directly.
Beep, beep-beep—
The moment she hung up, the phone rang again. Same caller ID.
Her brows furrowed slightly. She answered, switched to speaker, and stayed silent.
"So you're the one who kidnapped Beth?" came a young woman's voice.
"You're her companion?"
Jia Ying had already guessed this was the person the eyeless man said was Beth's partner, and asked directly.
"I warn you, you better not hurt her, or else—"
"Or else what can you do to me?" Jia Ying chuckled and cut her off.
"Or else our boss will be very angry. And when he gets angry, you'll be in big trouble," the girl said.
"Oh? You mean that boss of your detective agency?" Jia Ying asked with a smile.
"So you already asked Beth? She's fine, right… I'm not joking, Jia Ying. You don't understand how dangerous our boss is."
Jia Ying wasn't surprised that the other party knew her identity. After all, they were already investigating her. With one of their companions suddenly kidnapped, it wasn't hard to guess.
But what surprised her was the girl's nerve in threatening her. From what she saw of Beth, this detective agency was run by ordinary people. Most likely some enemy of Jia Ying's had tricked them into chasing her.
And yet they dared to threaten her? Were they tired of living?
She sneered, "Seems you people really don't know anything. Poor little things… But don't worry. Once I find the one behind all this, I'll send you and your 'scary' boss along the road as well."
However, the response this time wasn't what Jia Ying expected.
Instead of shouting or sounding scared, the girl suddenly said something strange:
"This is the place…"
Jia Ying froze for a second. Then her expression changed slightly—
Boom!!
At the same time her face changed, the other side of the room suddenly burst open with a loud crash!
A man wreathed in flames stepped in through the hole, followed by a young woman who was still on the phone.
"Found you."
