I'd become accustomed to creeping through Fangreach's halls by moonlight, but tonight the shadows loomed a bit closer than normal. Torchlight barely reached the corners. Every whisper sounded like a warning. There was a tautness in the air — something brittle just below the surface, as if the city were holding its collective breath.
I had kept going in reverses since before the dawn, investigating that none of the last of our supply had been adulterated.
