"Adam!" Raymond's voice broke the calm of the morning. He had just come down the stairs when he saw his son-in-law standing in the middle of the living room. The older man's brows furrowed. "What are you doing here so early?"
Adam's expression was unreadable, but his eyes carried a quiet storm. He looked like a man who had not slept at all. "Sofia is pregnant," he said at last, his voice low, strained, almost trembling. "She's pregnant, Dad."
For a moment, silence filled the room. Raymond blinked, startled. "That should be good news, son," he finally said. "Why do you look like someone just told you the world is ending?"
Adam sank onto the sofa and rubbed his face with both hands. "Because it feels like it is. You know how much she's wanted this, how long she's prayed for it. But this time it's dangerous. The doctor said another pregnancy could risk her life. I don't even know how to tell her that keeping the baby could mean losing her."
