Chapter 106 - Damien Vs Ant King

Fifty shadows against thousands. The numbers were laughable. But numbers, Damien had learned, meant little when quality was this uneven...Even if the rest of his army was with Hestia...He knew....This was enough

Igris led the charge.

The shadow knight's cape streamed behind him as he leaped into the swarm, his greatsword carving arcs of darkness through the air. Where his blade struck, ants died...cleaved in two, their bodies raining down upon the battlefield. He moved with the precision of a master, every strike finding its mark, every dodge flowing into the next attack.

Beside him, Diana was a whirlwind of death.

The Amazonian shadow, wielded her great scimitar with terrifying grace. The blade was longer than she was tall, yet she spun it like a dancer's ribbon, each revolution claiming another ant's life. When three ants attempted to swarm her simultaneously, she dropped low, spun in a complete circle, and bisected all three at the waist in a single, fluid motion.

"Impressive," Tiona called out as she bounced past, her own blades Urga flashing. "But watch this!"

She launched herself directly into the thickest part of the swarm, spinning like a top as her blades extended outward. The Amazonian's Ariel Maneuver sent her caroming through the enemy ranks, each bounce ending with another ant falling to the ground.

Tione, fighting below, rolled her eyes even as she cut down three ants in rapid succession. "Show-off."

But she was smiling.

Adonis fought in silence.

The martial artist shadow moved through the swarm like water flowing around stones. He used no weapons...needed none. His fists and feet were enough. Each strike was perfectly placed, each kick precisely aimed. When an ant lunged at him from behind, he sensed it before it moved, pivoting and driving his palm into its skull with enough force to shatter chitin.

The Adventurer shadows fought in disciplined formation, They formed a defensive ring around the battle's center, cutting down any ant that tried to breach their line.

Above them, the Ice Elf archers proved their worth.

They were merely ten archers....But each one a master of the bow, rained arrows upon the swarm with inhuman accuracy. Their arrows, infused with the cold of their former lives, froze ants mid-flight. The frozen corpses crashed to the ground, where the Ice Bears shattered them with enormous paws before moving to the next target.

The Five Lizard Knights, fought with reptilian ferocity. Their scaled bodies turned aside ant mandibles that would have pierced lesser armor, and their curved blades found the gaps in ant chitin with practiced ease.

Ryuu moved among them all.

The elf's kodachi flashed constantly, her speed making her a blur of green and silver. She didn't fight in one place....she flowed across the battlefield, appearing wherever the line was weakest, reinforcing wherever shadows fell. Her Luminous Wind activated repeatedly, healing minor wounds before they could become major ones.

"Left flank!" she called out, spotting a breach before it formed.

Samira was already there.

The Amazoness had taken Damien's order to heart....stay away from the King....but that didn't mean she would sit idle. She used the terrain as she always did, swinging from a low-hanging vine to drop directly into the middle of an ant formation. Her blade took two before they knew she was there, and she was gone before the third could react.

"Too slow!" she laughed, disappearing into the foliage.

Riveria watched from her position beside Baal, her breathing slowly returning to normal as her mana regenerated. The massive shadow stood immobile beside her, its single eye tracking the battle but waiting for its master's command.

"Soon," Riveria murmured, feeling her power return. "Just a little longer."

...

Across the battlefield, two figures faced each other in the crater the Ant King had created upon landing.

The Ant King studied Damien with intelligent, predatory eyes. Its body was lean but corded with muscle, its chitin a deep crimson that seemed to pulse with inner power. Its hands ended in claws that looked capable of rending steel.

"You fight with shadows," the King observed. "You hide behind your army. But now..." It dropped into a low crouch, claws extended. "Now you face me alone."

Damien's daggers reversed in his grip. "I've heard this average ass villain monologue to many times to give a fuck....Can we just do this?"

The Ant King moved.

It was faster than anything Damien had faced. Faster than the Ice Elf King. Faster than the Balor. Faster, perhaps, than anything in the dungeon below fifty. One moment it was thirty feet away; the next, its claws were inches from Damien's throat.

Damien flowed.

He wasn't faster...not quite. But his instincts, honed through countless battles in the system, screamed warnings before the King even moved. He ducked under the first claw strike, twisted away from the second, and brought both daggers up to deflect the third.

The impact sent him skidding backward, his boots carving trenches in the earth.

"Fast," he admitted.

The Ant King grinned. "You have not seen fast."

It came again.

This time, it didn't just attack...it danced. Its claws became a blur of motion, each strike flowing into the next with inhuman speed. Damien blocked, dodged, parried, but he couldn't counter. Every time he tried to strike back, the King was already somewhere else.

A claw raked across his shoulder. Blood sprayed.

Damien grimaced but didn't slow. He pivoted, driving a dagger toward the King's exposed side, but the monster twisted away at the last possible instant.

"You rely on instinct," the King observed, circling him. "Good instinct. But instinct alone cannot match speed."

It proved its point.

The next flurry of strikes came from every direction at once...or so it seemed. Damien blocked three, dodged two, but the sixth caught him across the ribs. The seventh opened a gash on his forearm. The eighth would have taken his eye if he hadn't thrown himself backward at the last moment.

He landed in a crouch, breathing hard. Blood dripped from multiple wounds.

The Ant King hadn't moved from its position. It hadn't needed to.

"You see?" The King's smile widened. "You cannot match me. Your shadows cannot save you. You are alone, Shadow Monarch, and you will die alone."

Damien wiped blood from his cheek and grinned back.

"Who said I was alone?"

...

"READY!"

Riveria's voice carried across the entire battlefield, amplified by magic. Her eyes blazed with power, her ice spear wand glowing with accumulated energy. Beside her, Baal's single eye pulsed with crimson light.

The Ant King's head snapped toward her. For the first time, its expression flickered....not with fear, but with recognition of a new variable.

Damien's grin widened. "Change of plans."

Ais moved first.

The Sword Princess had been waiting for this moment, her golden eyes fixed on the Ant King since the battle began. She crossed the distance in the span of a heartbeat, Desperate extended behind her in her signature Ariel thrust.

The King dodged....barely. The unbreakable blade passed within inches of its throat.

"TIONE! TIONA! NOW!"

The Amazon sisters struck as one. Tione came in low, her Zolas aiming for the King's legs. Tiona came in high, Urga descending toward its skull. The King twisted between them, claws deflecting Tione's blades while its body contorted away from Tiona's strike.

But that twist cost it precious time.

Ryuu's arrows found their mark.

Three shots, fired in rapid succession, each one aimed at a different vital point. The King deflected the first with its claws, twisted away from the second—but the third pierced its shoulder, burying deep in the joint.

The Ant King snarled.

Damien was already moving.

He flowed into the opening Ryuu had created, both daggers driving toward the King's chest. The monster blocked with its forearm, but Damien had expected that. He released one dagger, letting it fall, and caught it with his other hand...a reversal that drove the blade deep into the King's side.

Black ichor sprayed.

"YOU..."

Whatever the King intended to say was lost as Baal's beam carved through the sky.

The massive shadow's eye released a torrent of crimson destruction, but this time, it wasn't aimed at the swarm...it was aimed at the army. The beam swept across the ant legion, erasing hundreds in a single pass. Those that survived found themselves facing Riveria's ice.

"Wynn Fimbulvetr!"

The spell that had frozen Vorant's leg now swept across the battlefield in a wave of absolute cold. Ants that had dodged Baal's beam found themselves frozen mid-flight, their bodies crystallizing before they crashed to the earth and shattered.

The swarm broke.

They were soldiers, yes. Disciplined. Loyal. But...They were ants...and Ants were not about to go instinct for this....Especially after watching hundreds of their kin erased from existence in seconds. The surviving ants fled, scattering in every direction.

And in their wake, Damien's shadows found new strength.

He didn't hesitate. He reached out with his power, feeling the freshly slain ants...hundreds of them, their lives just extinguished. He pulled.

Forty shadows rose from the corpses.

Ant soldiers, their chitin now black as night, their eyes glowing with the same crimson light that burned in Igris's gaze. They joined their new brethren without hesitation, turning on their former kin with the same ferocity they had shown in life.

The Shadow Army had just grown by forty.

The Ant King stared at the impossible sight. For the first time, true emotion flickered across its alien features.

Fear.

"NOW!"

Damien's command sent his party into motion.

Ais struck first, her Ariel carrying her across the battlefield in a blur of golden light. Desperate traced an arc toward the King's throat, but the monster was ready now...it ducked under the swing and countered with a claw strike that would have disemboweled her.

Tione was there.

Her Zolas crossed, catching the King's claws between them. The impact drove her to her knees, but she held, gritting her teeth as the monster pushed against her blades.

"Sister!" Tiona appeared above them both, spinning as she descended. Her Ariel Maneuver brought Urga down in a devastating arc that the King only barely avoided. The blades carved deep furrows in the earth where it had stood.

It retreated, regrouping. Its wounds were already too much....and now...the gash in its side, the arrow in its shoulder, new cuts from Tiona's near-miss. But it was far from finished.

"You fight well," it admitted, its rasping voice carrying a grudging respect. "But you cannot..."

An arrow sprouted from its thigh.

Ryuu, hidden in the shadows at the battle's edge, notched another arrow. Her sky-blue eyes were calm, focused, utterly without mercy.

"I can," she said quietly. "And I will."

The King's composure cracked.

It exploded into motion, abandoning all pretense of tactical fighting. It became a whirlwind of claws and fury, striking at everything within reach. Ais met it head-on, her sword clashing against its claws in a storm of sparks. Tione and Tiona flanked it from both sides, their blades finding purchase where they could.

Damien watched, waiting.

The King was fast....impossibly fast. Even with three of the dungeon's strongest fighters pressing it from every angle, it held its own. Ais's sword carved a line across its chest. Tiona's blade opened its forearm. Tione's kukri found its ribs.

But every time they struck, it struck back.

Ais took a claw to the shoulder, stumbling backward with blood streaming down her arm. Tiona caught a backhand that sent her tumbling across the battlefield. Tione screamed as claws raked across her side, her Amazonian toughness the only thing that saved her from disembowelment.

"ENOUGH!"

Ryuu abandoned her position.

The elf flowed into the battle like water, her kodachi flashing in patterns too fast to follow. She wasn't trying to kill the King...she was trying to distract it, to create openings for the others. And it worked.

For a moment.

The King's tail...a weapon none of them had accounted for....swept low and caught Ryuu across the legs. She went down hard, her kodachi flying from her grasp.

The King loomed over her, claws raised for the killing blow.

"Ryuu!"

Damien was there.

He hadn't consciously decided to move. He had simply arrived, his body placing itself between Ryuu and death without consulting his mind. His daggers crossed above his head, catching the King's descending claws.

The impact drove him to one knee. Blood vessels burst in his arms. But he held.

"Damien..." Ryuu breathed.

"Get back," he gritted out. "I've got this."

She scrambled away, retrieving her blades, but she didn't retreat far. She couldn't. Not while he fought.

The King pressed its advantage, claws raining down in a relentless barrage. Damien blocked, dodged, parried...but he couldn't strike back. Every ounce of his focus was devoted to survival.

"You cannot win..." the King hissed, its face inches from his. "Those who are not arrogant enough...Willing to sacrfice thier kin....Those who think of others...Are all destined to die...Just like my own mother...So...d-"

It stopped.

Because Damien was smiling.

"Told you...I don't like this weak ass villain monologue....So..SHUT THE FUCK UP!"

The shadows screamed.

From every corner of the battlefield, from every fallen ant, from every shadow soldier still standing...darkness flowed toward Damien like water seeking the sea. It gathered around his daggers, around his arms, around his entire body. The power was immense, almost unbearable.

One hundred shadows.

One hundred souls.

One hundred strikes, each one stronger than the last, compressed into a single, devastating attack.

"Shadow Slash."

Damien's daggers moved.

They moved once, but that single motion contained a hundred cuts. The King's eyes widened...finally, truly afraid.....as it realized it couldn't dodge, couldn't block, couldn't survive.

The first slash opened its throat.

The second carved across its chest.

The third, fourth, and fifth removed its arms.

The next twenty reduced its torso to ruin.

And the final seventy...

Carved him up....

Where the proud Ant King stood....Was now a pile of ant pieces on the ground..each smaller than the next....He was cut...A Hundred times

Damien stood in the center of the devastation, his daggers still extended, his body trembling with exhaustion. Blood dripped from a dozen wounds. His vision swam at the edges.

But he was standing.

And the Ant King was not.
