Chapter 4 - The Gifted Six

Waking up from a restless night, Marcus shuffled in his bed, unable to wrap his head around the unnatural events of the night before. Rolling onto his side, he opened a drawer next to the bed. A gemstone, one of the same cut and size as the one Jake had, but of a different shade of colour. The yellow gem reflected the morning sunlight, and lightning danced within its core. The gem was passed down in his family for generations. As he stared at the gem, his eyes glowed with power, and lightning coursed through his veins. It was a secret his family had kept for centuries; no one but the Miller family knew the meaning of the gem.

A sleepless Jack was tossing and turning in his bed. He was wide awake the whole night after the events that happened. Jack looked at the clock to see that it was half past four in the morning. After a sleepless night, he decided it would be best to take a morning walk through the streets. As he jogged down towards the lobby, he heard voices. The voices were familiar, but he couldn't picture who they belonged to.

"Hey Jack, you're up early." Said a voice behind him. Jack looked around to see Luke waving at him.

"Morning, Jack. How did you sleep?" Marcus yawned.

"Didn't sleep." Jack replied, "Not after what happened last night."

"We get what you mean," Mia said, rubbing her eyes. None of us had a full night's rest."

"Care to join me for a walk down the streets?" Yawned Jack.

"Why not?" Luke said, "It would do some good for the morning air."

Everyone nodded; they needed to clear their minds on yesterday's unnatural events. The six walked out of Z City Hotel and down the streets towards the museum. As they got closer to the museum, ten police cars drove past them.

"What's going on?" Mia asked. " By now, we've seen about twenty police cars driving towards the museum."

"Wanna go check it out?" Luke suggested.

"Couldn't hurt, right?" Alexandra thought. The rest were just as curious and decided to see the matter with their own eyes.

Arriving at the museum, they were relieved to see that no incident had happened. The police parked their cars to form a barricade, securing the place. Worry faces appear on their faces, they don't know what had happened or if it was them that made it happen.

"We should head back," Bella said, looking at her phone, "It's almost eight."

"Yeah," said Jake. "Not much we can do right now anyway."

As the group returned to the hotel, Luke suddenly had a question. He kept telling his mind it was unimportant, but curiosity got the best of him. Luke asked, "How does it feel to create fire out of your hands, Jake?"

"Weird," Jake replied, "I got this tingle when I first made flames, and it felt… unpleasant."

"What do you think caused it?" asked Marcus.

"Don't know," said Jake, "but I think it has something to do with the statue, a curse may-"

A contemplative look suddenly froze on Jack's face.

"What's with that face?" Marcus asked.

"Is something wrong?" Mia questioned, voicing a concerned tone.

"I've never had this feeling before," Jack said, "it's like...a weird feeling of my head being pulled towards that alley."

"What?" Lucas had a confused look on his face.

"I don't know what this means...is it a warning?" said Jack.

A Cocky voice freezes them. "Well, look who decided to take a walk without the teachers being notified."

Luke and Alexandra instantly recognized the voice. It belonged to Bruce Carter, who was a very wealthy family in Ottawa, Ontario. Bruce was your first thought of a rugby player, large and muscular. Since his father owned a large construction company in Canada, he was very nasty about it. He was the type of person who would look down on people and get away with anything because of his rich father.

"What are you nerds doing out here so early?" asked Bruce.

"Bruce, why you dirty piece of -"

"Mia! Shush." Luke interrupted.

"But h-"

"Doesn't matter, you know what will happen if he tells his father?" Luke whispered. Mia shut her mouth, knowing what the consequences of disobeying him were.

"Why don't I just report to Mrs. Heathers?" Bruce smirked, "Unless you can bribe me with that."

Bruce pointed at Bella's necklace, which was made of pure silver and diamonds and glistened in the morning sun.

"You can't have this!" Bella protested, "This was passed down to my family for generations!"

"Well then, hope you know what's to come when Mrs Heathers hears of this!" Yelled Bruce as he ran inside the hotel. Within minutes, Mrs. Heathers stormed towards them with a very disappointed look on her face.

"How dare you go out without noticing the staff!" Heather reprimanded, "Do you know what I should do when you six get kidnapped or lost?"

"No…" The six replied, looking down at their feet.

"Go to your rooms and pack your needs for today, we won't be coming back here for the rest of the day." Heather dismissed them and sat down with a heavy sigh.

As the group began to walk back to their rooms, Jack sighed and asked, "Do any of you know where we're going today?"

"We're going to the Library today," said Luke.

"Oh, well, now the day just keeps getting better, doesn't it?" Jack huffs.

"Now, now, I heard that a new diary was found!" Bella informed, "We could sign up for it, you know? We could share the story with the rest of the class!"

"Now that I think about it, it could be a great thing to study history," Alexandra mumbled. They all nodded, thinking about the great impact the new story could bring to the school.

In an abandoned subway tunnel, the rats scattered from their meal as a tall, cloaked man walked down.

"Are we ready, men?" The man questioned the ten figures who were sitting on the stairwell.

"Ready, sir." A woman replied, "With the story finally translated into the current language, our master can finally be free."

"Good, pack your things, we're rolling out." The tall man ordered. The Gang packed tools and guns into two crates and loaded them onto a truck outside the tunnel.

"Wow!" Everyone stared in awe at the amazing sight. The library looked more majestic than ever seen. Hundreds of people gathered outside and inside the library. The inside looked as if you had stepped into a completely different world. A loud, pitched sound came from the end of the entrance hall.

"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls!" said a man with a British accent, "Welcome to the library!"

It was Sir William who was making the announcement.

"If you are interested in participating in the release of the newly translated diary, you can sign up here!" Sir William added.

Sir William proudly added. "The participants must create and submit a guess of what's in the written diary. Whoever writes the most convincing and logical theory will win a thousand-pound gift card!'

As Jack and the others moved to sign up for the contest, Luke asked, "So, what's our guess?"

"Maybe it is about the statue, like how it remained unfinished because their town was invaded by bandits?" Marcus suggested.

"That has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard," sighed Jack as he walked up to Sir William. "Ah, hello there, young man. If I recall correctly, you were on the school tour and came to the museum recently."

With a sigh, Jack registered the group name one by one. With the look on Jack's face, you could read his thoughts as if it's written on him as visible as the light of day. With the group name registered, they gathered around a small picnic table to discuss the ideal theory they had in mind.

"Have any ideas?" Marcus asked.

"Why don't we do some research before we discuss this?" Alexandra suggested.

"Good thinking, Alex!" Luke praised, "When was the book first found?"

"I got it!" Mia cheered, "They called it the sleeping child of the gods. That might be the title of the book."

"What's with that name?" Jack said, thinking it was a strange name for a simple old book.

"The article says that King Alfred, himself, named the statue and wrote the book himself," Bella read, "the king also said that it is a cursed object, but no one believed him."

"Why would the King himself give a statue a bizarre name?" Luke asked out of curiosity. The other ignored him and kept thinking of any possible way of winning the contest within the world's logic.

"We should go back to the library behind the museum," Bella suggested, "The contest doesn't start until evening."

"Good idea, we'll have more than enough time for research." Marcus agreed. After getting permission from the teacher and settling at a library table, they split up to look for any information regarding the statue.

"Hey, guys!" Luke called out, "I think that book might be the one we are looking for!" The whole library fell into a deep hush of silence. The other sighed and looked away with a disappointed face. Luke's face shot up with a straight face as he realized why everyone was looking at him.

"Sorry," Luke whispered,

Luke quickly walked over to the table and carefully placed the stack of books down, trying his best not to make a sound.

In the dark museum, guards were patrolling every hall. All cameras were being watched twenty-four seven. Although it was reported as a false alarm, they were ordered to patrol the halls of every corridor. Most officers just walk around in one place or talk to other officers near their respective posts. The further towards the statue we got, the tighter the security was. The statue was sealed into a hydrogen freezing chamber that is sealed air-tight. There was not a single vent or outside light that was able to enter.

The statue shook, with each shake getting more and more ferocious, like something was trying to break free. The guards outside heard noises within the walls that were sealing the statue away. As the guards opened the door and slowly stepped inside, the statue froze, turning back into the motionless carved rock. Once they all entered, the last guard to enter shut the door, sealing both the four guards and the statue once more. They opened their flashlights, walking slowly around the statue with their rifles raised.

Just as the guards calmed down, the statue burst open, and shards of stone flew in all directions. On the altar where the statue once stood was a teenage-looking boy. The guards, who were still in shock at the unexpected explosion, point their rifles at the boy. The boy's eyes were closed shut, his hair was silver-white. He wore exactly what was carved into the stone. A black robe that covered the black leather armour. His dark brown leather boots stood covering his foot to the center of his calf. He wore long black pants that had a pair of leather knee pads on each. The robe reached to his ankles, and the sleeves were just up to his wrist; leather shoulder pads were placed on both sides. His hands were covered with a pair of black leather fingerless gloves.

"This is the police!" A Officer shouted at the boy whose eyes were still shut. "Identify yourself and your purpose here!"

The boy doesn't move, still motionless. The 4 guards looked at each other, not knowing whether to shoot or not. Just as the officer was about to open his mouth, the boy's eyelids shot open. His eyes are Navy Blue, glowing in the dark room. The boy looks at the officers around him, with a single flick of his wrist, all four were forced to the wall with an invisible force, knocking them out cold.

Outside, the alarm came to life, signalling an attack by an unknown person with no known origin.
