Chapter 2 - Unexpected Attraction

Maya knew she should politely decline. Alexander Sinclair was so far out of her league they weren't even playing the same sport. But there was something in his eyes—a weariness that matched her own, a hint of genuine interest that had nothing to do with business networking.

"Just one," she heard herself saying.

They found a quieter corner of the bar, away from the clusters of conference attendees still making deals and exchanging contacts. Alexander ordered whiskey neat; Maya opted for wine.

"So," he said, settling into the leather chair across from her, "what brings you to this circus?"

Maya laughed despite herself. "Circus is right. This is my first major conference. I presented a proposal today, actually."

"How did it go?"

"Better than expected. Though I'm pretty sure I talked too fast and knocked over a water glass."

Alexander smiled, and the expression transformed his entire face. Gone was the intimidating CEO, replaced by someone who seemed almost... approachable.

"I once gave a presentation to the board of directors with my shirt buttoned wrong," he confessed. "Didn't notice until afterward."

"You're lying."

"Scout's honor. My assistant was mortified. I got the deal anyway."

They talked for an hour, then two. Maya found herself relaxing in ways she hadn't expected. Alexander was funny, surprisingly down-to-earth, and when he listened, he gave her his complete attention as if she were the only person in the room.

"I should probably head back to my hotel," Maya said eventually, glancing at her watch. It was past midnight.

"Where are you staying?"

"The Marriott down the street."

Alexander signaled for the check. "I'll walk you."
