Chapter 149 - Chapter 150: Smart Combat Backpack

Early the next morning, Amir dragged No. 32 over. With a half-cyborg right at hand, there was no way he was going to let that resource sit unused.

No. 32 still had plenty of weaknesses in combat. First, he'd never been trained with firearms—his marksmanship was about on par with a fresh stormtrooper recruit. If a ranged enemy pinned him down, all he could do was dodge and hide.

So Amir decided to build him a combat-assist system.

The moment No. 32 sat up straight, Amir cut open a panel in his back and started working, staying at it all the way until noon.

When he finally finished, No. 32's back looked bulkier—because a device capable of automatic fire had been added.

Half-cyborgs had that advantage: their bodies could be modified freely. Sometimes you could even use their existing components to simplify what would normally require extra hardware. For example, an auto-firing blaster would ordinarily need a scanner for target acquisition—Amir instead routed that function through No. 32's cybernetic eye. Convenient and accurate.

Point. Shoot.

No. 32—shirtless—rubbed his shiny bald head and gave a slight shrug. A thin mechanical arm suddenly extended from his back. Amir had built the arm from very tough alloy—hard for blasters to destroy. At the end was a micro blaster barrel. Since it didn't need manual firing, many human-oriented parts could be omitted.

The output wasn't huge, but it made up for it with rate of fire and precision.

And with blasters, even lower power still hurt if it hit flesh—and if it hit a vital spot, it still killed. As an assist device, it was excellent.

Amir looked at his work with satisfaction. He almost wanted one himself—except he didn't need it. Machine aiming wasn't going to beat him.

Seeing the leftover materials, Amir had an idea and started tinkering again. Now that he had a furnace, his range of fabrication expanded dramatically. Ideas that used to be hard to implement suddenly became easy.

Before long, he had built the rough frame of a small square alloy backpack. From there, Amir packed internal components into it. With the previous build fresh in mind, and using similar leftover parts, he worked smoothly—less than an hour later, it was finished.

He attached straps to the alloy box, strapped it onto his own back, and walked out of the Traveler.

By a tan stone hill, Amir pressed a button on the chest strap. In the next instant, just like No. 32's new weapon, a mechanical arm extended from the small box behind him, lifting a blaster barrel—this one with a spherical micro-scanner built in.

But if that were all, Amir wouldn't have looked so pleased.

He pressed another button. Two more mechanical arms extended from the left and right sides of the box. When Amir approached a stone block about human height, the arms extended automatically—one hand discharged a powerful electric current, while the other blasted out a fierce jet of flame.

"Beautiful…" Amir laughed at the gray stone in front of him.

This thing was basically a "money makes you happy" box—perfect for someone with little combat experience to stay alive. Later he could let Millisyn wear it first. Functionally, he decided to call it the Smart Combat Backpack.

Then Amir couldn't help thinking: No. 32 was still missing something. He could discharge electricity, but Amir had forgotten to install a flamethrower power unit. Looks like he'd have to "build" No. 32 again.

After a full day of work, No. 32's back had two large bulges, and his forearms were thicker by a whole ring. Compared to his earlier thin frame, he looked stronger now.

Millisyn also wore a small pack and happily twisted side to side. The mechanical arm behind her twisted along with her, like she was doing some kind of strange cult dance.

Amir pulled out the design blueprint for his bracer again. He'd drawn it a long time ago, back when he hadn't even gone to the academy and didn't understand machinery nearly as well as he did now.

The core of the bracer was the intelligent system he had coded himself. It governed everything: the screen-equipped communicator (the closest thing Amir had built to a phone), the micro spider droid that folded up like a button and magnetically docked into a recess on the bracer, and at the center, the smallest possible holoprojector.

All the miscellaneous functions were packaged into the "phone."

Now that he had the conditions, Amir naturally wanted to upgrade the bracer.

It was a bracer, after all. A bracer that couldn't withstand a lightsaber strike wasn't a real bracer. But using beskar on the outside would draw too much attention—and could trigger Mandalorian hostility. So Amir used beskar on the inner layer, the side that sat against skin, while the outer layer was a different tough alloy used as a cosmetic shell.

Inner and outer together neatly covered the internal mechanisms.

After that, Amir spent most of his time making molds. Once the molds were ready, he only had to pour in molten alloy. Then he'd hammer out imperfections, polish it, and spray a pattern—just like that, a plain bracer that wouldn't attract attention was born.

Amir nodded in satisfaction. It was a very full day. He hadn't trained, but he'd gained a lot.

Obi-Wan was already overwhelmed teaching Millisyn and No. 32, and didn't have attention to spare for Amir's workshop obsession.

After a long day, Amir was tired. He drank a bowl of porridge and went to rest.

Over the next few days, Amir returned to normal training. In his free time, he built a few more Smart Combat Backpacks as stock.

Not because some mission required them—Amir simply found mechanical work relaxing, pure entertainment.

But since they existed, he could send a few to Ahsoka's people. Veronica would definitely love them.

At last, Obi-Wan grew curious enough to step into Amir's workshop. "What have you been tinkering with these days?"

"Making some… primitive combat tools?" Amir said cautiously.

Obi-Wan looked at the few metal boxes stacked in the corner. "Millisyn showed off the paint job to me. It's… quite good."

For some reason, Amir let out a breath.

"Of course. It's the symbol of the guardian of urban peace—the dark fighter who strikes criminals. A symbol of justice," Amir said.

He had painted a flashy Batman emblem on them.

"What's that?" Obi-Wan asked, puzzled. "Some Coruscant urban legend?"

I'm not little Jay. I don't believe that stuff.

"It's not a legend. It happened in Gotham City on Coruscant. I've even seen him," Amir lied casually.

He finished what he was doing—he'd made a bracer for his right hand too. Since it didn't house internal hardware, its diameter was smaller than the left one. The right hand mattered most; Amir was right-handed, and that was the hand he used for his lightsaber.

"Hm… a dark fighter," Obi-Wan murmured, thinking. "Could that be… a Jedi who hides in the shadows…?"
