Chapter 4 - Kindled determination

"So..this is where you shop huh."

Leaning over Ruby, Visio watched curiously as Ruby stuffed her basket full of discounted out-of-date frozen meals.

"..It's cheap. And stop talking to me. People already think I'm weird. I don't need them thinking I'm schizophrenic too."

Finished with filling her basket, she crouched down and began picking out random discounted canned goods. Carefully selecting only certain ones to put in her basket.

"Well if I really am a delusion of yours, wouldn't they be right?"

"..."

Instead of answering, she replied with a single exasperated glance, before continuing what she was doing.

"So.. You seem to be only picking out certain ones..are you only picking the tastiest ones?"

She looked at him as if he were an imbecile.

"I'm picking out the ones with high vitamins and sugars…It's cheaper than buying vitamin supplements."

She added the last part to avoid any further comments from him.

"Don't you get a stomach ache?"

"Sometimes. But It's still cheaper."

She quickly paid for her items, picking the self-checkout despite the emptiness of the store.

"This is quite a nice neighborhood. I bet it looks beautiful during the day."

He commented while walking back with her, observing the flowers along the sidewalk, blooming in the moonlight.

"Wouldn't know."

"What do you mean you dont know?"

"I mean I don't know. Never seen it during the day."

Hearing this, Visio walked ahead of her, turning around with an elegant twist of his feet. The wind blew at this specific moment, taking with it some petals from the nearby flowers. As the wind softly disheveled his hair, it deposited the petals on top, giving him an ephemeral otherworldly beauty, glistening in the moonlight.

"Are you.." He began to say, his hair glittering with silver.

"..Sure you're not a vampire?"

"They only do discounts after 9pm you son of a-"

Her swearing was cut off by an exhale followed with a high kick to Visios face.

"..Y..you have..remarkable flexibility for someone who sits in bed all day.."

He mumbled through the foot that was sunk in his face.

"..:Stupid delusion. To think for a second I thought you looked-"

"Looked what?"

Rubbing his face, he asked with no small amount of pain in his voice.

"Nothing. I don't know why I am even bothering to interact with a delusion..Maybe I really am malnourished enough to need two dinners.."

"On that we can at least agree on!"

He added with a smile.

A smile that quickly disappeared when she glared at him.

"Anyway. I wanted to ask something."

He quickly changed the topic.

"What now?"

"Your..obsession with saving money. Only one meal per day..even the fact you only go out to shop during the night in chase of discounted groceries..You mentioned it was not because you were wanting for money. So..what is the reason if I may ask?"

He carefully asked her, his own curiosity getting the better of him.

"That..I just want to make sure I don't have to work."

"That's..all?"

He was befuddled by her answer.

"..Yes. If I pinch my pennies, my savings should last me for several more years. Several years I can spend freely daydreaming and drowning in my own delusions."

"..:And then?"

He asked.

"Then what?"

"What will you do..after those several years of daydreaming. What will you do when your savings finally run out?"

At this question, she became silent.

"If I manage to reach that point.."

She looked up at him, lightly picking off the petals stuck to his hair and scattering them in the wind.

"I suppose that is when my dream will end. Along with me."

The petals swirled in the air around for a while, before slowly sinking to the ground.

He had no clever response to this, so Visio merely stared at her, observing her expression.

"..You're awfully curious for a mere delusion."

"Don't say that! and If I am a delusion am I not made this way because you wanted me to be this way? Does that not mean you wished me into existence?"

"...Annoying. Just disappear already."

She walked back to her apartment, leaving Visio behind to run after her.

Although he could not help but glance down at the petals that were now on the ground, slowly sinking into a nearby puddle.

He looked back towards Ruby, deciding something in his heart as he ran after her despite her protests.
