UK:GSW Chapter 346 – Knight of Light, Prosecutor Namikaze Naruto, Harvey Namikaze Dent
Uchiha Sasuke had many thoughts about his current life—he was, by nature, a person with many thoughts—and so now, his mind never stopped working.
In the past, his thoughts had been about how to take revenge on Uchiha Itachi, how to revive the Uchiha clan.
Now, they were about how to prevent Gotham from getting any worse.
Yes—only to stop it from getting worse. Although he had prevented many crimes, Gotham City was rotten to the core, in a state of sustained collapse. Sasuke knew that at best he could only be a patcher of cracks; the ones who could truly make the city good again were others.
In the early morning, having worked through the night, a slightly tired Sasuke sat on his luxurious sofa, watching Gotham's morning news.
The program covered how many criminals Batman had dealt with the night before, followed by street interviews with Gotham citizens for their opinions.
These interviewees fully displayed the diversity of the "human species" in America—people praising Batman, criticizing him, or offering mixed opinions was normal enough. There were also those who shouted about being on TV, calling for their parents or friends to see them; some promoting vegetarianism, LGBT causes, and other minority movements; and some who immediately launched into F-word greetings to the entire population of Gotham, even insulting the president, the military, and the entire world.
And those were the less extreme ones. The more extreme included people streaking on the spot or doing performance art like defecating on the street—making one feel Gotham truly was a land of "outstanding talents," rivaling the infamous Florida.
Sasuke remained silent at this. He truly could not understand the thinking of Gotham's eccentric people.
However, America was "the beacon of humanity," a "land of freedom and democracy," so while Sasuke couldn't understand them, he would respect their hobbies—at least, those that didn't harm others.
Well, "didn't harm others" only went so far. Some of those acts were still illegal—for example, the public defecator and the streaker were violating the state laws of Gotham's jurisdiction.
Of course, Sasuke wasn't watching the news to see Gotham's opinion of him, much less to watch the city's eccentric performance art—he was waiting for the real star of the morning news to appear.
Soon enough, the broadcast cut to a live news conference.
Don't ask why the morning news suddenly switched to a live press conference—chalk it up to America's own unique "national conditions," where news content was not strictly fixed, and could change on a whim when needed.
The star of the conference was Gotham's youngest prosecutor—a man upright and incorruptible, full of boundless sense of justice, entirely out of step with Gotham's tone. Indeed, he was from out of town, and had sworn to bring Gotham into the light, to wipe out all its criminal forces.
In the half-year since arriving in Gotham, this prosecutor had done much, using the law to send criminals to prison—including powerful Gotham crime bosses with vast resources, elite legal teams, and protective umbrellas.
Such results in Gotham were practically cheating. His sunny handsomeness and constant bright smile made him beloved by many, earning him the nickname "Knight of Light."
This champion of judicial justice was no inflexible pedant—he supported Batman, and had often publicly stated that Batman was also part of Gotham's justice.
Of course, he didn't fully approve of Batman—he disapproved of Batman's use of vigilantism to injure criminals, and had repeatedly called on Batman to work with Gotham's legal system, to handle criminals through lawful procedures.
If Batman, upon finding and apprehending a criminal, could refrain from beating them half to death and instead hand them directly to the police along with the relevant evidence, then the Knight of Light could ensure those criminals were sent to prison and given the punishment they deserved.
And this "Knight of Light" was named Harvey Dent Namikaze—half American, half from the Island Nation—so he also had an Island Nation name: Namikaze Naruto.
Yes—right now, Sasuke was watching the television broadcast of this high-spirited, justice-filled, smiling "Knight of Light" Naruto. His feelings were mixed, his mind full, but he couldn't speak a word.
On TV, Naruto wore a black suit, his hair perfectly combed. He had none of the noisy, boisterous manner of the shinobi world's Naruto—instead, he was steady and full of heroic spirit, giving off a sunny, reliable feeling that made people instinctively trust him.
At that moment, Naruto's passionate voice declared that Gotham's judicial justice was steadily advancing, that more and more criminals were being apprehended and legally tried, proving that the fire of justice would not fade, but would keep burning to bring more light to Gotham.
And then, he announced his candidacy for mayor—that as mayor, he would bear greater responsibility and mission, to let the light of justice completely cover the darkness of Gotham, making it a true city of justice.
This justice, light, and determined posture was completely different from Batman—almost the opposite extreme—so much so that Sasuke stared in a daze.
Then, memories from "two lives" intertwined—the Naruto from the shinobi world, and this Gotham Naruto.
Unconsciously, Sasuke's lips curved in a faint smile.
"Just like you… 'back then' you said you wanted to be Hokage, and 'now' you say you want to be mayor. You really do love doing things that look stupid…"
Then his smile faded, his expression serious.
"But… Gotham's evil is beyond your imagination. This is nothing like the Hidden Leaf. Naruto… in this world, can you bear it all?"
As he murmured, Sasuke suddenly froze—because on the broadcast, Gotham's Naruto mentioned Batman, stating that Batman had stopped many crimes the previous night. While his methods were extreme, he had indeed saved many people. As Gotham's prosecutor, Naruto expressed his gratitude to Batman, and sincerely invited Batman to join his team of justice, to create a beautiful, righteous new Gotham together.
It was clear this was no empty politeness—it came from the heart. Those bright, burning eyes held pure determination and sincerity.
This Naruto was serious. He truly wanted to work with someone many saw as an outlaw criminal. In his mind, while Batman's methods were extreme and wrong in some ways, they were not beyond correction. If he could bring Batman into his team, he could change those extreme methods, and together they could create a better future.
Undeniably, this idea was so naïve it was laughable—enough to make one want to mock it viciously, to trample it completely.
After all, in a place like Gotham, anyone that naïve, wanting to rally people to change the city in a "glorious and righteous" way, was so idealistic it was almost sickening.
No doubt, at this very moment, many in Gotham were mocking him, even feeling disgust and hatred, wishing to see him destroyed.
Even Sasuke had to admit—this prosecutor Naruto was too naïve, thinking he could change Gotham this way.
But…
Why was his heartbeat speeding up?
Why was there an urge to believe in him?
He knew it was naïve, foolish, impossible—yet…
Why did he feel the impulse to believe?
It felt… as if Gotham really could become better under the efforts of this Knight of Light.
Beside him, Alfred, who had been observing, noticed the change in his master's expression. A thought stirred in his heart, and he spoke:
"Master, this Mr. Dent is without doubt a noble and righteous man. His style is entirely out of place in Gotham, and his attitude will certainly anger many, even drive them to act against him."
"But… precisely because such a man stands in the light, Gotham's hope still lives. His presence and his efforts will bring new possibilities to this city."
Hearing his butler's words, Sasuke fell silent for a moment before speaking in a low voice:
"Alfred… you mean I should accept his invitation—and join his team as Batman."
Alfred gave no direct answer, but continued as a butler giving counsel:
"Master, Mr. Dent does indeed need your help. Whether it's Batman's strength or the power of the Uchiha Group, both would be a tremendous aid to him in changing Gotham."
"If Mr. Dent succeeds, his example will inspire many more people to stand beside him, to help him—because, even in this city, there are many who long for the light."
Sasuke listened in silence. He knew this was Alfred's pure goodwill—stating Naruto's potential in this city, and hoping for his success.
Because, when Gotham's Naruto succeeded, the Dark Knight Batman's mission would end. Sasuke, as Batman, could retire from the role—no longer bearing the heavy mission of being a scourge of crime by night, and no longer living with constant mortal danger.
That was what Alfred truly wished for.
This capable man, Batman's greatest assistant and support, was in fact the one who most disliked Batman—because Batman meant Sasuke was always in danger. He only wanted his master to live in health and safety.
But, as a butler, even if he thought this way, Alfred would never stop his master—instead, he would give his all to support him.
