"I don't know," I admitted without hesitation. "I don't even know who all of my mates are … but if you are one of them, I wouldn't mind."
His lips curved into a soft smile as he tilted his head, like he wanted to look deeper into me. Slowly, he lifted his hand, reaching toward my face, but just before his fingers touched me, he stopped.
"I hope you'll still think that way when we finally meet," he whispered. His hand hovered close, making a small gesture as though he was gently stroking my hair, even though he never touched me. "Good night, my sweet mate."
The moment those words left his lips, darkness wrapped around me. Yet, it wasn't frightening at all. Instead, it felt warm, almost tender, as if the darkness itself wanted to give me the kind of embrace I had longed for but never had.
I had no idea how long I drifted in that comforting void until my eyes finally opened again. A soft sigh escaped my lips, relief flooding me at being back in the real world.
