Chapter 3 - In the Headlights

The sky was dark, rain fell ominously over the city city lights, expanding ripples into the reflections below.

A young boy sat in front of a store, drifting his mind into the glistening stars above him.

He looked empty… his long black hair suddenly dropped in front of his eyes, taking his mind back from the stars. He looked behind him to see a tall man standing just behind him.

"Kid, what are you doing in front of my store?"

The kid just sat there, staring into the eyes of the man, he didn't say anything.

"If you're not going to say anything then get the hell away from my store."

The boy didn't move, he just continued to stare into the man's eyes, and the man showed a demanding look across his face, displeased that the boy wasn't moving.

He suddenly picked up the kid by his collar. He reached back over his shoulder, then extended his arm forward, lobbing the kid into the asphalt of the street, bruising him.

"..."

He had no sense of pain…

The boy slowly got up, averting his attention to the streets before him. Headlights appeared down the road, and the kid took three steps towards the middle of the street. The car approached fast, drops of rain covered the windshield, then were swiped away in an instant. He put his arms out, and the lights landed on his torn shirt. The light grew bigger, and bigger as the car quickly approached.

"Kid, what the hell are you doing!?"

The boy turned his head, and he saw the shopkeeper running towards him.

"Move!"

The kid sat still, staring into the man's eyes, noticing the panic that engulfed them.

The man dove towards the kid, throwing him to the curb.

A loud bang sounded through the street… and the man was on the ground.

"Ahhhh!"

Vigorous pain filled the man's body.

The kid turned around and stared into the man's eyes, no change in his expression at all.

"again…"

The car stopped…

A man in an all gray suit stepped out, he was a tall man, his eyes were almost hazel, and his hair shone a platinum color. He seemed old, and to the boy, he seemed to be somewhere in his 60s.

"Hey kid are you okay!? I almost hit you there!"

The boy continued to stare at the man's body on the ground, slowly nodding his head to answer the old man.

The man looked into the boy's eyes and turned around, he looked at the road where the boy stared, but nothing was there.

"What are you looking at kid, are your senses okay?"

The boy nodded, he slowly pointed at the man on the ground. The old man turned around for a second time looking just above where the man lay, and again, he 'didn't' see anything.

"Hmm, are you sure you are okay?"

The boy turned his gaze towards the man's face and slowly nodded.

The man looked around to see if anyone was with the boy, but he had no one, he was there alone, just a street kid causing trouble.

"Are you with anyone?"

He continued to stare into the man's eyes, not moving his head.

The man sighed.

"Where are your parents at?"

The kid shook his head.

The man rubbed his hands down his face, he didn't know what to do. He looked around once again, desperate to find someone who could help, but the two were alone in front of the headlights.

"Why don't you come with me alright? Maybe I can help you out."

He reached his hand down to the boy, and he suddenly grabbed it in return. The man picked up the boy easily, his weight was non-existent. He dragged the boy into the back seat of his car, placing him down on a set of gray chairs made out of premium leather. He closed the door as soon as the kid was settled, then he opened the driver side door, and entered the car himself.

"So kid, what's your name?"

The boy looked down at his own feet, his nails were dark, full of dirt, he stared at them for a while, hesitantly waiting for the man to say something again, but he was silent.

The man waited for the boy to respond, they sat there for a while, then the car slowly started to move.

"L-Len."

The old man smiled at Len's response.

"Well it's nice to meet you Len, you can just call me Doc!"

An eerie grin appeared on Doc's face.

They headed up the road towards a hill, where a single house resided, glowing in the distance.

They pulled into a long driveway, then suddenly, the car stopped.

Doc swung his door open, but Len stayed sitting in the backseat. Doc opened up the backdoor and gestured that he was welcome to get out and let out his hand in front of Len. Hesitantly, Len grabbed his hand and Doc helped him down from the seat until he reached the concrete below.

He looked up to see a giant white house with wooden accents, windows surrounded the entire building, making it an open space to view the foliage around. The house had a totally modern look, something that wasn't normal in the buildings below, only someone with a lot of wealth could afford something so luxurious in such an area, clearly Doc was someone important.

"Welcome to my home! You can stay here for a while, until we find someone who can help you okay?'

Len slowly nodded.

"Alright! Let's go in!"

He grabbed Len's arm and brought him inside.

The house appeared empty at first, the white walls barren, and the house a blank canvas for anything Doc would desire.

They walked through the hallway entrance, passing many doors, before stumbling into an open room, only a singular chair stood in the center of the room turned towards a wall of windows that overlooked a portion of the city below that surrounded a beautiful lake that glistened with every drop of rain from the moonlight above,

"Let me take you to where you will be sleeping, alright?"

Len only nodded, mesmerized by the night before him, but suddenly Doc broke his interest. He took Len's hand, and dragged him through the house, leading him down a set of stairs.

In the corner of the basement, was a single white door, no others around it, just an empty room, similar to the rest of the house.

Doc opened the door.

In the middle of the room resided a bed, around a queen, covered in scarlet sheets, matching the interior wallpaper the room was dressed in. Over in the left corner, there was a vertical mirror that reflected the opposite side of the room where a white door stood, locked at all times.

"This is your room! So, what do you think?"

Len looked around the room, still carrying a blank expression.

"Quite nice isn't it, there is a bed, a desk, everything you could need! You even got a mirror so you can admire yourself!"

Len walked over to the bed, sitting on the edge as Doc watched him.

"It's getting pretty late, kid, so rest for now and I'll meet you in the morning, okay?"

Len nodded.

Seeing that he was alright, Doc exited the room, closing the door behind him, murmuring to himself.

Len admired the room he was in, scanning everything inside the room, he spotted a mirror in the corner of the room. He slowly got down from the bed and walked over to the mirror. He saw a boy in the reflection, he examined the boy's body, he had black hair and dark empty eyes, he seemed skinny… and weak…

Len reached his hand out to touch the mirror… the reflection was gone… He returned to the bed, and laid his head back.

He was slightly surprised by the mattress's feeling, he never knew something could be so soft.

He was always on the street, alone, sleeping on boxes, benches, and sometimes the grass in the local park, but he rarely did so as the blades always made him feel so itchy.

There wasn't anywhere for him to go in Breleye, it was just a small sector of the vast Vinterbelle, a single city that spanned the flat continent it shared its name with. Breleye wasn't comparable to the other sectors around, its area engulfed a lake, leaving little landmass to its name. Nobody knew what belonged to the lake, all they knew was not to approach the doc which led to the center of the lake…

He suddenly reached his arm out staring into the white ceiling above… he slowly closed his eyes, and fell asleep.

***

Wake up…

Wake up young child…

Len's eyes slowly opened and a current of wind tossed him in the air, a blue light appeared under him as he began to fall.

He landed on a watery surface, he looked down, and saw himself in the reflection.

Up here

He looked up to see the glistening sea of stars he saw once before…

Remember?

Len looked forward, seeing a blue star appear in front of him, emitting a blue mist.

He stood there quietly, staring into the soul of the star that appeared before him.

The voice echoed once again…

Obtainmywill…

Control…

AndLive…

Len was sent back up into the air, coming face to face with the shining stars, but gravity pulled him down quickly, he closed his eyes, and as soon as he hit the surface below…

*Knock Knock*
