Lawrence Winters spoke with absolute certainty, not allowing Mrs. Fang to make excuses.
Mrs. Fang looked toward Mr. Zhuge as if seeking help.
Mr. Zhuge was a bit curious as well; he pondered and said, "If we want to resolve Miss Tang's problem, I'm afraid we'll have to start with her mother. If Mrs. Fang has photos, that would be ideal."
Mrs. Fang had no choice but to stand up and say, "I'll go upstairs and look. Such old stuff, who knows which dusty corner it's been shoved into. You two wait here, I'll be right back."
Speaking as she walked toward the stairs, Mrs. Fang went up to the second floor.
Lawrence and Mr. Zhuge sat downstairs, both looking thoughtful.
Lawrence replayed Mrs. Fang's earlier words from beginning to end in her mind and still felt that nothing in what she'd said could logically lead to the conclusion that Miss Tang was "not human."
