Chapter 45 - Chapter 45: The One who lifts the hammer

The SHIELD chopper touched down in a facility in Puente Antiguo, New Mexico, kicking up dust under a starlit desert sky.

Kakashi stepped out as he looked at the temporary facility built around the mysterious hammer.

Phil Coulson greeted him with a warm smile, his suit crisp despite the desert grit. "Mr. Kakashi, good to see you."

"What's the situation?" Kakashi asked, his tone lazy but sharp, cutting straight to the point.

Coulson gestured toward the facility's heart. "We're getting strong electromagnetic signals from the hammer. It's not of this world—confirmed. The readings are off the charts, unlike anything terrestrial."

Kakashi's eye crinkled, intrigued. "Bring me to it. Let's see what this thing is."

A bald man nearby scoffed, his voice dripping with disdain. "Are you stupid? It's alien, probably radioactive or carrying some off-planet plague."

Kakashi squinted at him, his tone dry. "And you are?"

Coulson stepped in, his voice smooth. "Agent Sitwell, Level 7, like me. He's overseeing security here."

Kakashi caught Sitwell's micro-expressions—tightened jaw, narrowed eyes, a flash of hostility.

'This guy doesn't like me. Jealousy? Suspicion? Something's off.' He filed it away, keeping his face neutral. "Noted. Still want to see the hammer."

Sitwell opened his mouth to protest, but alarms blared, red lights flashing across the facility. Coulson grabbed his walkie-talkie, his voice sharp. "What's happening?"

A panicked agent's voice crackled through. "Sir, a man's breached the perimeter! He's knocking out our guys like they're nothing, heading for the hammer!"

"Powered individual?" Coulson asked, his brow furrowing.

"No, sir. Just… a bodybuilder type with serious combat skills."

Coulson glanced at Kakashi, his tone calm but firm. "My men can handle it. Let's get you to the data on the hammer first."

Kakashi nodded, but his instincts screamed caution. 'A random guy storming a SHIELD base? Either he's crazy or he knows something.'

To be safe, he pressed his thumb into his palm, channeling chakra. "Summoning Jutsu!" A puff of smoke revealed Pakkun, the grizzled ninja dog, who took one look at the unfamiliar faces and stayed silent, his tail wagging innocently.

"Pakkun, track the intruder who is punching down people in this facility. Bring him down if required," Kakashi said, his voice low. 'Pakkun's got this. A normal guy's no match for a ninken.'

Pakkun gave a subtle nod and darted off, his nose to the ground. Coulson's eyes lit up, stars practically dancing in them. "You can summon a dog? That's incredible!"

Kakashi's eye crinkled, amused. "Ninja dog. Big difference. Now, show me the readings."

Sitwell's scowl deepened, his gaze darkening at the summoning.

'He's got a problem with my jutsu,' Kakashi thought, noting the agent's hostility. 'Something to watch.' He followed Coulson to a command tent filled with monitors.

---

Meanwhile, Pakkun weaved through the facility, his nose tracking the intruder's scent—sweat, adrenaline, and… mead?

'This guy smells like a bar fight,' Pakkun thought, his pug face scrunching. He found the man—a hulking blond in a flannel shirt, plowing through SHIELD agents like a bull through straw.

The guy was built like Gai after a protein binge, his fists dropping trained operatives with ease. He reached the hammer, embedded in a crater, and grabbed its handle, grunting with effort.

Pakkun tilted his head, unimpressed. 'All those muscles, and he can't lift a hammer? Gotta be on those human steroids.'

The man—Thor Odinson—yelled at the sky, "Mjölnir! Why do you forsake me?!" His voice was a mix of rage and despair, shaking the air.

Pakkun snorted. 'Drama queen.'

Channeling chakra into his legs, he leaped, slamming a paw into Thor's hand with surprising force. The Asgardian staggered, his eyes rolling back as he crumpled, out cold.

'One hit? Weak.' Pakkun eyed the hammer, its runes glinting faintly. 'Kakashi'll want a look at this.' He clamped his teeth around the handle and lifted it effortlessly, trotting off toward Kakashi's scent. 'Just needs a good bite. Humans overcomplicate everything.'

---

Inside the command tent, Kakashi scanned the hammer's readings—electromagnetic spikes, gravitational anomalies, and energy signatures unlike anything on Earth.

He turned to Coulson. "You said no one could lift it, even with protective gear?"

Coulson nodded, his voice tinged with awe. "Yeah, even in radiation suits, it's like the hammer's glued to the ground. We've tried everything—cranes, pulleys, nothing works."

Before Kakashi could respond, an agent burst in, panting. "Sir, there's a situation!"

Coulson sighed, rubbing his temples. "Didn't you suppress the trespasser?"

"He took out most of our guys, sir, but… a dog stopped him."

Kakashi's eye twitched, a smirk forming. 'Pakkun, you showoff.' Coulson blinked, confused. "A dog?"

The agent pointed toward the corridor. "You need to see this, sir."

Kakashi, Coulson, and Sitwell stepped out to find Pakkun trotting toward them, a hammer clamped in his jaws, his tail wagging like he'd fetched a stick. Sitwell's jaw dropped, his voice a mumble. "How… our best agents couldn't lift it…"

Coulson stared, his tablet slipping slightly. "That's… impossible."

Kakashi fought the urge to facepalm. 'Pakkun, you had one job—subdue the guy, not steal the show.'

He knelt, scratching Pakkun's head. "Good boy. Drop it."

Pakkun released the hammer, letting it thud to the floor, and sat back, tail wagging.

'Boss looks impressed. Bet he's jealous of my teeth,' Pakkun thought, his pug face smug.

Coulson gaped. "How did he—?"

"Ninja dog," Kakashi said, his tone dry. "Strong jaws."

He reached for Mjölnir, expecting to study it, but when he pulled, it didn't budge. His eye widened, his chakra surging as he tried again—nothing. 'What the—?' He strained, muscles tensing, but the hammer mocked him with its immobility.

Pakkun tilted his head, his thoughts blunt. 'Boss must've skipped his calcium pills. Gotta chew more bones, Kakashi.'

He yipped, playing the dumb dog act, but his eyes glinted with amusement.
