Chapter 74 - Passing Year, New Turns

Scene 1 – The Flow of Life

The city had shifted into a calmer rhythm. The chaos of the previous year had faded, replaced by routines, responsibilities, and moments of ordinary joy. For everyone, time had become a healer, stitching wounds and giving space for new beginnings.

DSP Haroon's days were now filled with case files, morning briefings, and endless calls from subordinates. His rank carried authority, but also a heavy burden. Yet at home, Maryam ensured that life was balanced. Ubaid, six years old now, was becoming mischievous and full of questions, while little Irfan, three, followed his brother everywhere.

On the other side, SSP Farooq, having reached one of the top designations in the police, managed his force with discipline and dignity. Inspector Jibran, too, was now more confident, wearing the uniform with pride.

Meanwhile, Noman had settled comfortably into his job at the revenue department. His new desk, computer, and piles of account books were now his battlefield. Every morning, he left in crisp shirts, carrying files under his arm. Sara, after resuming her college, was doing well with her studies, and their life at home revolved around small conversations, shared meals, and mutual encouragement.

But not all stories remained ordinary. At the Amana Superstore, a different kind of tale was slowly unfolding.

Scene 2 – A Glimpse at the Superstore

It was a quiet weekday afternoon. The aisles of Amana Superstore buzzed with the usual rhythm of customers and staff. Rimsha walked across the floor, dressed in an elegant light green kurti with matching bangles. She was carrying her diary in one hand and her phone in the other.

As she stopped to check the arrangements near the cashier, Imran entered the hall from the other side. He wore a navy-blue shirt tucked neatly into black trousers. His hair was freshly styled, and a light fragrance of cologne followed him.

Their eyes met across the distance—just a fleeting glance—but both noticed something unusual.

Rimsha adjusted her dupatta with a shy smile, lowering her eyes for a second. Imran, catching that reaction, simply smiled to himself and walked toward her.

Imran: "Assalam-o-Alaikum, ma'am. Everything seems to be running smoothly today."

Rimsha (looking up with a polite smile): "Wa Alaikum Assalam, yes, alhamdulillah. Just making sure the staff isn't slacking."

Imran leaned lightly on the counter, his tone shifting from formal to slightly personal.

Imran: "And what about you? You look… different today. Something's special?"

Rimsha (raising an eyebrow playfully): "Special? No, nothing like that. Maybe you're just noticing too much."

Both chuckled softly, the air between them growing lighter. A few employees passing by exchanged knowing glances; the comfort between the two was becoming visible.

Scene 3 – Frank Conversations

Later that evening, Rimsha called Imran into her office to review weekly sales. Imran entered with a file, but the discussion drifted quickly away from numbers.

Rimsha: "Sometimes I wonder if this work has made me too strict. Everyone sees me as a boss, not as a friend."

Imran (smiling gently): "That's not true. People respect you, that's different. And as for being strict, well… someone has to keep this place in order."

Rimsha rested her chin on her hand, looking at him thoughtfully.

Rimsha: "You always manage to say things that sound… comforting."

Imran (half-laughing): "Maybe because I say what I feel. No pretense."

There was silence for a moment. The ticking of the clock filled the room. Both seemed lost in the comfort of each other's company.

Rimsha (changing subject quickly): "By the way, nice choice of shirt today. Navy-blue suits you."

Imran (pretending casual, but pleased): "Really? I noticed you're wearing green. It's my favorite color."

The words hung in the air, subtle but heavy. Rimsha blushed faintly, turning to shuffle the papers on her desk.

Scene 4 – Glances and Subtle Signals

Over the weeks, their interactions grew warmer. Sometimes, when walking through the store, Imran would hold her gaze just a little longer than usual. At other times, Rimsha would notice his attention lingering when she adjusted her dupatta or brushed her hair back.

One evening, as Rimsha was leaving the store, she found Imran waiting near the main gate.

Imran: "You're late today. Need me to drop you home?"

Rimsha (hesitating, then softly): "No… I'll manage. But thank you."

Yet her eyes betrayed a silent gratitude, an unspoken warmth.

Scene 5 – At Haroon's Home

Meanwhile, life at Haroon's home carried a different kind of joy.

Maryam stood in the kitchen, supervising Ubaid as he stirred a bowl of flour. Little Irfan sat on the counter, swinging his legs.

Ubaid (excited): "Mama, when will Baba come? I want to show him the drawing I made."

Maryam (smiling, wiping flour from Ubaid's cheek): "He'll be here soon, beta. Then you can show him everything."

When Haroon entered, the children rushed to him, hugging his legs. Maryam smiled warmly, feeling grateful for the stability life had finally brought.

Scene 6 – Noman and Sara's Routine

At home, Noman returned from the revenue department, his tie slightly loosened, holding files under his arm. Sara had already prepared dinner.

Sara (teasing): "Looks like someone had a busy day."

Noman (sighing, smiling tiredly): "Busy doesn't even begin to describe it. But it feels good to have responsibility."

They sat together at the table. Sara told him stories from college, and Noman listened patiently, sometimes advising her, sometimes simply laughing at her small complaints. Their bond as siblings remained their strength.

Scene 7 – The Changing Atmosphere

At the superstore, things continued to evolve. Employees now whispered whenever Imran and Rimsha walked together. They noticed how Imran sometimes carried Rimsha's files or how Rimsha often asked for his suggestions on matters that didn't require his input.

One afternoon, as they stood near the clothing section, Imran adjusted the display of shirts.

Imran (playfully): "Which one do you think would suit me better? The grey or the maroon?"

Rimsha (smiling softly): "Grey. It matches your personality. Calm, dependable."

Imran looked at her, a spark in his eyes.

Imran: "And what about you? If I had to choose something for you, I'd say… sky blue. It matches your softness."

Rimsha's heart skipped a beat, though she quickly looked away, pretending to check the display.

---

Scene 8 – Silent Realizations

That night, Rimsha sat by her window, sipping tea. She recalled Imran's words, his smile, the way he noticed her dresses. Something inside her stirred—something she had long buried under work and responsibilities.

At the same time, Imran lay in his room, staring at the ceiling. He thought of Rimsha's laughter, her confidence, and the way her eyes softened when she smiled. It was no longer just admiration; it was slowly turning into something deeper.

Scene 9 – A Different Kind of Bond

Over the next weeks, their interactions continued—sometimes professional, sometimes playful, sometimes lingering on the edge of emotions they had not yet confessed.

In the silent corners of the store, in the subtle exchanges of glances, in the way they noticed each other's colors, dresses, and words, their bond was forming—a bond that neither had planned, but both were beginning to feel.
