Chapter 70 - The Shadows of Confession

Scene 1 – SHO Jibran's Visit to Haroon's Office

The morning sun filtered weakly through the half-open blinds of Inspector Haroon's office. A pile of reports sat untouched on his desk, his mind still heavy from the ongoing case of Zafar Ibrahim. Just as he reached for his cold cup of tea, a knock came at the door.

"Come in," Haroon said, his tone steady.

SHO Jibran entered, his face tense. "Inspector Haroon, Najma is asking to meet you again in the interrogation room. She says she has more to tell—something very important."

Haroon's eyes narrowed. "More confessions?"

"Yes," Jibran replied, lowering his voice. "She insists it's something only you should hear."

Haroon stood up slowly, putting on his coat. "Fine. Let's not waste time. Take me there."

The two men walked down the silent corridor of the police headquarters. The clicking of their shoes echoed against the concrete floor, and Haroon felt a strange heaviness in his chest. Each step reminded him that every truth uncovered about Zafar was darker than the last.

Scene 2 – Inside the Interrogation Room

The interrogation room smelled of damp walls and old cigarettes. Najma sat in her usual place, hands cuffed in front of her, eyes carrying a strange mixture of guilt and exhaustion. She looked up as Haroon entered with Jibran.

Haroon pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down. His tone was calm but firm.

"Speak, Najma. I'm listening."

Najma took a deep breath, her lips trembling slightly. "Inspector Haroon… I still have more to tell you. Something I've hidden for too long."

Haroon leaned forward, eyes sharp. "Then don't waste time. Tell me everything."

Scene 3 – Najma's Confession

Najma's voice cracked as she began.

"I am Zafar Ibrahim's so-called 'sister.' Not by blood, but by bond. He used to call me his sister, and I lived in his shadow. But Inspector, before you… there was another officer. His name was Inspector Kamran Aziz."

Haroon raised his brows. "Kamran Aziz?"

"Yes," she nodded quickly. "Kamran once caught drugs worth twenty crores belonging to Zafar. That seizure shook Zafar to his core. It wasn't just a loss—it was humiliation. Since then, Zafar carried venom in his heart, swearing to destroy anyone who stood against him."

She paused, her voice shaking. "Inspector Haroon, you must understand—Zafar is not just a criminal. He is filth. A man without honor, without a soul."

Haroon's eyes darkened, but he stayed silent, letting her continue.

Najma swallowed hard and spoke again.

"Do you know what kind of man he truly is? Zafar is so vile… he even destroyed his own daughter. Her name was Humaira. She was just 21 years old. She grew up in my lap, calling me Phuppho. I raised her, loved her like my own child. But when she stood against her father—when she chose to help Inspector Kamran—Zafar turned on her with cruelty I can't even describe."

Her voice broke, tears welling in her eyes. "Humaira wanted to help Kamran bring Zafar down. She said, 'Phuppho, abbu ka zulm khatam hona chahiye.' But Zafar… he saw her as a traitor. He treated her worse than an enemy."

Haroon clenched his fists under the table. "And her mother? Where was she?"

Najma lowered her gaze. "Her mother died when Humaira was just two years old. After that, she had no shield, no one to protect her from the monster she called father."

The silence in the room grew heavy. Even Jibran, standing near the wall, shifted uneasily, his jaw tight.

Najma wiped her tears with her cuffed hands. "Inspector, I am warning you… don't make the mistake of underestimating him. Protect Sara. Protect Noman. Zafar will not stop until he destroys them both. He has already destroyed one daughter, he won't hesitate with another."

Haroon's voice came low, steady. "Don't worry. As long as I'm alive, I won't let Zafar touch Sara or her brother."

Najma looked at him with hollow eyes. "I pray your words prove true. Because I know the weight of losing a daughter to his cruelty."

Scene 4 – The Web of Corruption

As if gathering the last fragments of her strength, Najma leaned closer, whispering as though the walls had ears.

"And Inspector… listen carefully. Zafar is not alone. Some high-ranking police officials—men in uniforms like yours—are working for him. They protect him, they shield him. That's why he's survived this long."

Haroon's chest tightened. "Do you know their names?"

Najma shook her head. "No. If I knew, I wouldn't be alive to tell you. But believe me… they exist. And what shocks me most is their silence. Why haven't they moved yet? Why are they letting you chase him this far? Maybe they're waiting for the right moment… or maybe they want you gone before you uncover too much."

Her voice fell into a whisper, trembling with both fear and finality. "This is all I had left to confess."

Scene 5 – Haroon's Silent Resolve

For a long moment, the room was silent except for the faint hum of the ceiling fan. Haroon slowly rose from his chair. His face carried no expression, but inside, the storm of emotions brewed violently—anger, sorrow, determination.

He glanced at Najma, who now sat slumped, drained of strength. Without a word, Haroon turned and walked to the door. Jibran followed him out, closing the metal door behind them.

As they stepped into the corridor, Jibran whispered, "Haroon bhai… this is getting darker than we thought."

Haroon didn't reply. His silence was heavy, his mind replaying every word of Najma's confession—Humaira's broken life, Sara's looming danger, and the poisonous reach of Zafar's power.

He returned to his office, sat down at his desk, and pressed his palms against his face. For the first time in years, Inspector Haroon felt the crushing weight of helplessness—but beneath it, a stronger fire burned.

This ends today, he thought. Zafar Ibrahim, your time is coming.
