Chapter 52 - The Web of Lies

Scene 1: Interrogation Room – Islamabad Police Headquarters

The dim light in the interrogation room cast long shadows across the grey walls. A ceiling fan whirred above, doing little to dissipate the thick tension in the air. Two men, Asif and Bilal, sat handcuffed to the metal table, their clothes disheveled and brows drenched in sweat. Facing them were two senior investigation officers, DSP Kamran and Inspector Saleem. A constable stood by the door, arms folded, eyes sharp.

DSP Kamran slammed his hand on the table, the sound echoing like a gunshot.

Kamran: "Enough of this silence! We've been sitting here for five hours. You think this is a game?"

Bilal flinched, his eyes darting toward Asif, who looked down at the table, lips pursed. Inspector Saleem leaned in close to Bilal, voice calm but sharp as a knife.

Saleem: "Bilal… You've got two options. Speak now and maybe save yourself. Stay quiet, and I promise you, by tomorrow, your life will be in a hell you can't imagine."

Bilal licked his dry lips, eyes trembling as he looked at the officers. His breathing quickened, and then he spoke in a shaky tone.

Bilal: "My… my name is Bilal Hussain. I didn't plan this. I just… I was told to deliver."

Kamran: (leaning forward) "By who?"

Bilal's lips trembled before the words spilled out like poison.

Bilal: "Noman. He's the ground floor manager of the Amana Superstore. He told me everything was safe."

Kamran's eyes narrowed as he scribbled down the name.

Kamran: "Noman. Good. Finally, something real. And how are you connected to him?"

Bilal: "I just… I supply when he calls. He's connected to the bigger racket."

Inspector Saleem gave a slow nod and turned his attention to Asif, who still hadn't looked up.

Saleem: "Your friend is talking sense. If you're smart, you'll do the same. Where did you get that packet?"

Asif finally raised his head, his eyes filled with a strange confidence.

Asif: "From my friend… Rehan."

Kamran: (writing) "Rehan? Full name."

Asif: "Rehan Malik. Lives in Blue Area. He's the one doing the work. I'm just a delivery man."

Saleem: (narrowing his eyes) "And why would Rehan do this? Is he a street thug like you?"

Asif smirked faintly before replying.

Asif: "No. He's… educated. He needed extra income. That's all. His father is Ahmed Gill Mallah… a senator in the National Assembly."

The room went silent for a moment. Kamran looked at Saleem in disbelief.

Kamran: "You're telling me a senator's son is dealing drugs?"

Asif nodded confidently.

Asif: "Yes. He thinks no one will touch him because of his father's position."

Scene 2: Officers Cross-Check

The officers stepped out of the interrogation room, leaving the two suspects under guard. They walked down the corridor to the operations room, where files and maps covered the walls. Kamran pulled out a chair and sank into it, rubbing his forehead.

Saleem: "Sir, if what Asif said is true, this case just got political."

Kamran: "Or he's lying to buy time. We can't take his word blindly."

Saleem opened the preliminary case file and checked details.

Saleem: "Noman, the manager, is already a red flag. His financials show irregularities. But if this Rehan lead checks out…"

Kamran leaned forward.

Kamran: "Run Rehan Malik through NADRA, confirm his father's identity, and pull his mobile records. I want every number he's dialed in the last month."

Saleem nodded and signaled to a constable.

Saleem: "Get me Rehan Malik's details—address, CNIC, family connections. Hurry."

Scene 3: Back to the Interrogation

Back in the room, Bilal tapped his fingers nervously on the table. Asif sat calm, almost smug. Kamran reentered, his eyes sharp.

Kamran: "Bilal, you've been honest so far. Keep talking. Who picks up after Noman?"

Bilal hesitated, glancing at Asif before lowering his gaze.

Bilal: "I… I don't know his real name. They call him 'Siraj Bhai.' He runs things from Karachi. Big money, big connections."

Kamran exchanged a look with Saleem. This was bigger than they expected.

Kamran: "Siraj Bhai? Karachi? And you've seen him?"

Bilal: "No, never. Only heard his voice once on a call Noman put on speaker."

Kamran shifted his attention to Asif.

Kamran: "You? Ever spoken to this Siraj?"

Asif shook his head slowly.

Asif: "No. Only Noman or Rehan. That's all."

---

Scene 4: Internal Doubts

Outside the room, Kamran's phone buzzed. It was Inspector Haroon.

Haroon: "Kamran, update me."

Kamran: "Sir, names are coming out. Bilal gave us Noman—the ground floor manager at Amana Superstore. Asif claims he got his packet from Rehan Malik, senator's son. And they both mentioned someone called Siraj Bhai in Karachi."

There was a pause before Haroon spoke.

Haroon: "If a senator's son is involved, this case just turned into a minefield. No mistakes, Kamran. Keep pushing. I'm coming over in an hour."

Kamran: "Understood, sir."

Scene 5: The Breaking Point

Hours stretched into the night. The officers rotated shifts, each trying a different tactic. Saleem tried intimidation; Kamran used psychological pressure. They played good cop, bad cop, even bringing in photos of the drugs seized.

Finally, around 2:30 a.m., Asif broke under pressure when Kamran slammed the table with a file containing Rehan's verified profile.

Kamran: "Enough lies! We know who Rehan Malik is. Now, tell me, what's his role?"

Asif hesitated, his lips quivering.

Asif: "He… He organizes the deals. Sets the price. The big consignments come through him. I only get packets when Noman or Rehan tell me."

Kamran: "And these consignments… where from?"

Asif glanced nervously at Bilal, then whispered.

Asif: "Karachi port. Through containers. Siraj Bhai handles it there."

Saleem's pen scratched across the paper rapidly. The puzzle was coming together: Karachi supplier, Islamabad distributors, political protection.

Scene 6: Midnight Reflection

By dawn, both suspects were exhausted, their voices hoarse. Kamran stepped out to the corridor, calling Haroon once more.

Kamran: "Sir, it's clear. Noman is a key player in Islamabad. Rehan Malik is higher up, and there's a Karachi link—Siraj Bhai. They're running a network worth crores."

Haroon's voice was grim.

Haroon: "Good work. But this stays in-house for now. No leaks. We'll meet tonight to plan the next move. And Kamran—prepare detailed transcripts of everything. I'll need them."

Kamran: "Yes, sir."

He hung up and looked back at the closed interrogation door. The case had started with a packet worth 25,000 rupees… and now it was spiraling into a multi-crore operation touching the halls of power.

Kamran muttered under his breath as he walked back toward the room:

Kamran: "This isn't just a drug case anymore. It's a war."
