The Aftermath
The Heart of Ash was silent, its once volatile landscape eerily still. The lava flows had cooled into jagged blackened rock, and the air, though still hot, carried a strange stillness. Eren stood in the center of the crater, his breathing ragged. The Fragment of Ember pulsed faintly within him, a rhythmic glow under his skin, and with every pulse, he felt the incredible weight of its power.
Lyssandra approached him cautiously, her steps unsteady on the uneven terrain. "How do you feel?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Eren flexed his fingers, watching faint trails of ember-like energy dance along his skin. "Stronger," he admitted, though his tone was grim. "But... this power isn't without a cost."
Lyssandra nodded. "You've taken in two Fragments now. We don't know how much strain your body can handle before—" She stopped herself, unwilling to finish the sentence. Instead, she looked at him with worry etched across her face.
Eren's silver hair, now streaked with faint strands of fiery red from the Fragment's influence, shimmered in the dim light. His crimson eyes glowed faintly as he looked at her. "It doesn't matter," he said firmly. "If I can stop the Eternal Night, I'll bear any burden."
Before Lyssandra could respond, the ground beneath them trembled, a deep rumble reverberating through the crater. Both of them instinctively prepared for another battle, their weapons drawn.
The Warning of the Keeper
From the shadows of the volcanic rocks emerged an unexpected figure: the Elder Keeper, his form slightly translucent, as if he were a projection. His emerald eyes glowed faintly, contrasting against the dim backdrop of the crater.
"You've done well to claim the Fragment," the Keeper said, his voice resonating with a calm authority. "But the Heart of Ash is only the beginning of your trials."
Eren lowered his blade slightly but kept his guard up. "What do you mean? The Fragment is secure, and the Flamebound Wyrm is defeated."
The Elder Keeper shook his head. "The Eternal Night is not merely an adversary of strength. It is an entity of manipulation, capable of twisting even the strongest wills. Every step closer you take, the more it will try to break you—not just through combat, but through the deepest shadows of your mind."
Lyssandra stepped forward. "Why are you telling us this now? You've already pledged your aid to our cause."
The Keeper's form flickered slightly as he replied, "Because there is another trial awaiting you, one not of strength, but of resolve. You must descend into the Abyssal Hollow, where the Fragment of Despair lies. It is a place where even the strongest hearts have crumbled."
Eren narrowed his eyes. "Let me guess. This Fragment will challenge everything I stand for."
The Keeper's expression was grave. "Precisely. And if you falter, it will consume you."
A Difficult Decision
As the Keeper's projection faded, silence enveloped the crater once more. Eren sheathed his blades and turned to Lyssandra. "We don't have a choice. The Abyssal Hollow is our next destination."
Lyssandra crossed her arms, her brow furrowed in frustration. "Eren, we barely survived this. If the Fragment of Despair is as dangerous as the Keeper says, you might not make it out."
"I'll make it," Eren said firmly. "I have to."
"But at what cost?" she pressed. "You've already changed so much since you absorbed the first Fragment. Look at your hair, your eyes. Even the way you fight—it's as if the Fragments are reshaping you."
Eren's gaze hardened. "If I don't keep pushing forward, the Eternal Night will destroy everything. We don't have time to hesitate."
Lyssandra sighed, realizing the futility of arguing with him. "Fine. But if we're doing this, we're doing it smart. No rushing in without a plan."
Eren nodded. "Agreed. Let's rest here for a while and regroup."
A Troubled Night
As night fell over the Heart of Ash, the faint glow of the cooled magma created an eerie ambiance. Eren sat by a small campfire, his crimson eyes reflecting the flickering flames. Lyssandra rested nearby, her breathing steady as she slept, but Eren found no solace in rest.
The System's interface hovered in his vision, displaying a new quest:Main Quest: Enter the Abyssal Hollow. Retrieve the Fragment of Despair. Objective Difficulty: Extreme.
His hands clenched into fists as he read the words. The System's notifications, once a source of guidance, now felt like chains tightening around him. He couldn't shake the feeling that each step forward only bound him more tightly to a destiny he had no control over.
"Do you doubt yourself?" a voice echoed in his mind, cold and mocking.
Eren's eyes snapped open, scanning the area. "Who's there?" he demanded, his blades drawn in an instant.
The voice chuckled. "You can hear me now, can't you? Good. That means the Fragments are taking root."
"Who are you?" Eren growled.
"I am what awaits you," the voice replied cryptically. "And I will see you fall."
Eren's grip on his blades tightened, but the voice faded, leaving him alone with the crackling fire and his racing thoughts.
The Journey to the Abyssal Hollow
Morning came too quickly, the oppressive heat of the volcanic region pressing down on them as they prepared to leave. The path to the Abyssal Hollow was treacherous, winding through a series of labyrinthine tunnels that descended deep into the earth.
The System offered occasional updates, mapping their route and highlighting hazards. However, the further they traveled, the more unstable the environment became. Walls of jagged obsidian threatened to collapse, and faint whispers echoed through the tunnels, growing louder with every step.
Lyssandra shivered despite the heat. "Do you hear that?" she whispered.
Eren nodded, his expression grim. "It's not just sound. It's... something else. Stay close."
The whispers grew into fragmented voices, each one taunting them with cruel, half-formed sentences."You will fail.""They will betray you again.""You are nothing without us."
Eren clenched his jaw, forcing himself to focus. But the words burrowed into his mind, stirring memories he'd rather forget—his betrayal in the Shadowmire, the faces of those who had abandoned him, and the crushing weight of solitude.
"Eren!" Lyssandra's voice snapped him out of his thoughts. She pointed ahead, where the tunnel opened into a massive cavern. In the center of the cavern stood an ornate gate, covered in dark runes that pulsed with an ominous light.
"The Abyssal Hollow," Eren muttered. "We're here."
