Olivia's POV
"I'm sorry."
Those two words hung in the air between us. I stared at Anita, searching her face for any trace of manipulation or deceit. The night breeze carried the faint scent of jasmine from the gardens below, but all I could focus on was the woman standing before me—a shadow of her former self.
"You're sorry?" I repeated, unable to keep the incredulity from my voice. "After everything you've done?"
Anita's eyes dropped to the balcony floor. "I know it sounds hollow now."
"It sounds impossible," I corrected her.
She looked up, and the moonlight caught the moisture gathering in her eyes. "I've been jealous of you my entire life, Olivia. You never had to try. People just... gravitated to you."
I almost laughed. "Is that what you think my life has been like? Easy?"
