The priest had barely finished speaking before Lara kissed her.
There was no hesitation.
No careful pause for the court.
No elegant restraint.
Lara cupped Sarisa's face with both hands and kissed her with the same fierce certainty she brought to battle, as though she had crossed every war, every argument, every mistake, and every mile of distance simply to reach this moment.
Sarisa kissed her back.
The Moon Temple erupted around them.
Applause crashed beneath the silver arches. Demon voices rose in cheers. Celestian bells rang from the upper galleries.
Somewhere near the front, Kaelith shouted, "Finally!" loudly enough to make several priests laugh.
Sarisa barely heard any of it.
Lara's lips were warm. Her hands trembled slightly against Sarisa's cheeks.
When they pulled apart, Lara stayed close, their foreheads touching, both of them smiling through tears neither intended to acknowledge.
"My wife," Lara whispered.
The words sank into Sarisa's heart.
"My wife," she answered.
Lara kissed her once more, softer this time.
Then the ceremonial bells changed.
The sound deepened, becoming slower and more solemn. The guests quieted as temple attendants approached the altar carrying the instruments of coronation.
The wedding had ended.
The reign was about to begin.
Sarisa's hand tightened around Lara's.
The first attendant carried a long white mantle embroidered with the history of Celestia in silver thread.
The second carried a darker mantle marked with red flame and black rose patterns, created for Lara as royal consort and co-ruler.
A third held the royal staff of Celestia, crowned with a crescent crystal. The fourth bore two crowns on a velvet cushion.
Sarisa's crown was made of pale silver, elegant but strong, with a central moonstone surrounded by smaller dark-red gems representing the Demon Realm.
Lara's was darker, forged from black metal with silver points shaped like rising stars.
Lara stared at them.
"Those look heavy," she whispered.
Sarisa fought a smile. "That is your concern?"
"I have a headache just looking at mine."
"You survived wedding planning."
"Barely."
The high priest stepped forward again.
"Today, the realm does not merely witness a marriage. It witnesses the beginning of a new reign."
The temple fell completely silent.
"Marena Nocturna has been removed from power and condemned by law. The throne of Celestia stands vacant. Before this gathering, before the sacred moon and the citizens represented here, Sarisa Daemara now presents herself to accept the crown."
Sarisa released Lara's hand reluctantly and stepped forward.
The ceremonial mantle was placed over her shoulders. It settled heavily against her back, but unlike the expectations her mother had forced upon her, this weight did not feel like a chain.
It felt chosen.
The priest looked into her eyes.
"Sarisa Daemara, do you swear to govern with justice rather than fear?"
"I swear."
"Do you swear to protect the people of Celestia, regardless of rank, blood, wealth, or origin?"
"I swear."
"Do you swear that the laws of this realm shall bind the crown as surely as they bind its citizens?"
Sarisa thought of her mother.
Of hidden laboratories.
Of Neris being called an instrument.
Of Lara in chains.
"I swear."
The priest lifted the royal staff and placed it in Sarisa's hands.
"Do you swear to open the future of Celestia rather than preserve its isolation?"
Sarisa raised her chin.
"I swear."
The answer rang through the temple.
The priest took the silver crown.
Sarisa lowered herself to one knee.
For one brief moment, she saw her mother's throne room as it had once been. Cold. Bright. Full of people bowing because they were afraid not to.
Then the crown touched her head.
"Rise, Sarisa Daemara, Queen of Celestia."
Sarisa stood.
The temple bowed.
Every Celestian noble lowered their head. Priests knelt. Guards struck their fists to their chests. Human, demon, elven, and dragon representatives bowed according to their own customs.
Lara did not bow.
She stood at the altar, looking at Sarisa with such pride that the entire ceremony nearly dissolved beneath it.
Then it was Lara's turn.
The darker mantle was placed around her shoulders.
Lara adjusted it once, clearly suspicious of the amount of fabric.
The high priest spoke.
"Lara Daemara, you enter this reign not as an ornament beside the throne, but as its shield, partner, and equal voice. Do you swear to protect Celestia and its people?"
Lara's expression became serious.
"I swear."
"Do you swear to stand beside Queen Sarisa in peace, crisis, prosperity, and war?"
"I swear."
"Do you swear to temper strength with mercy and passion with judgment?"
Lara paused.
A few guests shifted.
Malvoria covered her mouth.
Raveth looked delighted.
Sarisa gave Lara a warning look.
Lara sighed.
"I swear to try."
Laughter moved through the temple.
The priest's mouth twitched.
"That will be recorded as an oath."
"Cruel," Lara muttered.
The black-and-silver crown was placed on her head.
"Rise, Lara Daemara, Royal Consort of Celestia, First Shield of the Crown, and equal partner to the sovereign."
Lara rose.
Sarisa held out her hand.
Lara took it immediately.
The temple bowed again.
This time, they stood together.
Not princess and captain.
Not political problem and diplomatic disaster.
Queen and consort.
Wives.
The priest waited until the guests rose.
Then two smaller cushions were brought forward.
Sarisa knew what came next.
Her heart tightened.
"Aliyah Daemara," the priest called.
Aliyah's eyes widened.
Kaelith nudged her forward with both hands.
Aliyah stumbled one step, glared over her shoulder, then walked toward the altar with as much dignity as she could recover.
Her white dress moved softly around her legs, and her red eyes lifted toward Sarisa and Lara.
She looked suddenly nervous.
Sarisa set the royal staff aside and knelt before her.
"Come here, my love."
Aliyah approached.
The priest addressed the temple.
"Aliyah Daemara, first child of Queen Sarisa and Lara Daemara, is hereby recognized before Celestian law as legitimate royal issue, Princess of Celestia, and first heir to the throne."
A small silver circlet was lifted from the cushion.
Aliyah stared at it.
Sarisa smiled. "It will not hurt."
"I know."
"You look worried."
"I am not worried."
Lara crouched beside them. "You have your serious face."
"I always have a serious face."
"That is true," Lara conceded.
The circlet was placed gently on Aliyah's head.
It bore a tiny red stone between two silver stars.
"Rise, Princess Aliyah Daemara, first heir and successor to the Celestian throne."
Aliyah stood.
The temple bowed to her.
Her eyes became enormous.
She leaned closer to Sarisa and whispered, "Why are they doing that?"
"Because they recognize you."
Aliyah considered that.
"Do I have to bow back?"
"Not today."
"Good."
Lara hid a smile.
Then the priest called the second name.
"Neris Daemara."
The atmosphere changed.
Not badly.
But carefully.
Neris remained near Veylira, frozen.
His white suit made him look small against the grandeur of the temple. His eyes moved from the crowd to Sarisa, then to Lara.
Lara extended her hand.
"You're safe."
Neris hesitated.
Then he walked forward.
Slowly.
Every step carried the history of what had been done to him. Created in secrecy. Named as a subject. Used as evidence. Denied personhood by the woman who had ordered his existence.
Now the entire realm watched him approach the throne not as an experiment.
As a child.
As family.
Lara knelt and took both of his hands.
The priest's voice was clear.
"Neris Daemara, chosen son of Queen Sarisa and Lara Daemara, is hereby recognized as legitimate royal issue, Prince of Celestia, and second heir to the throne after Princess Aliyah."
Neris looked at Lara.
"Chosen?"
Lara's eyes softened.
"Yes."
"Even if the magic was forced?"
"Especially then," Lara said. "They chose how you were made. We choose who you are to us."
Neris's eyes filled with tears.
Sarisa knelt beside them and touched his cheek.
"You are not a project. You are not an instrument. You are our son."
The small circlet placed on his head carried a yellow stone at its center, framed by silver.
"Rise, Prince Neris Daemara, second heir and successor to the Celestian throne."
Neris stood.
The temple bowed.
This time, he began crying.
Lara pulled him into her arms without hesitation.
Aliyah joined them, wrapping her arms around his side.
Sarisa closed her eyes briefly as she held all three of them.
The crown remained heavy upon her head.
But this was what it protected.
Not power.
Them.
The priest raised his hands one final time.
"Witness the House of Daemara. Queen Sarisa. Royal Consort Lara. Princess Aliyah, first heir. Prince Neris, second heir. May their reign bring truth where there was secrecy, mercy where there was cruelty, and unity where there was division."
The bells rang.
Fire rose through the temple.
Moonlight poured down over the family gathered at the altar.
Lara reached for Sarisa's hand again.
Sarisa looked at her wife, then at their children.
A new reign had begun.
