Chapter 23 - Chapter 21: The Shattering.‎

‎-----

‎The chamber pulsed with an eerie stillness as Aelira stood before the fractured mirror, the shard's dark energy swirling within her. Her breath was shallow, her body trembling under the weight of the Queen's lingering presence.

‎"You cannot escape me," the Queen's voice echoed in her mind, cold and commanding.

‎Aelira's heart raced, but she steadied herself, focusing on the flickering light within her. She had faced darkness before...not just the Queen's but her own. She had buried parts of herself to survive, but now, she had to face them.

‎With a deep breath, Aelira closed her eyes, reaching within to the core of her being. She embraced the pain, the fear, the anger....the parts of herself she had hidden. As she did, the shard's energy surged, threatening to overwhelm her.

‎But Aelira held firm.

‎"I am not you," she whispered, her voice gaining strength. "I am me."

‎The chamber trembled as the Queen's presence recoiled, the shadows dissipating. Aelira opened her eyes, the shard now glowing with a steady, golden light in her palm.

‎-----

‎Meanwhile, the group pressed forward through the forest, the air thick with tension. The woman with the shard was close, her presence a palpable force in the air.

‎"She's near," Lyra said, her voice tight with determination.

‎Thorne gripped his axe, his eyes scanning the shadows. "Stay alert."

‎Suddenly, the woman appeared before them, the shard pulsing with dark energy in her grasp.

‎"You've come for this," she said, her voice laced with mockery. "But you're too late."

‎She raised the shard, and the forest around them twisted, reality warping under its influence. Shadows stretched and writhed, forming into monstrous shapes that lunged at the group.

‎Kaelon stepped forward, his hands crackling with elemental energy. "We won't let you control this."

‎With a roar, he unleashed a torrent of fire and ice, striking at the shadows. But they reformed, relentless.

‎Oren chanted an incantation, his feathers glowing as he summoned protective wards around the group. "We need to stop her before the forest consumes us."

‎Lyra darted forward, her daggers flashing as she cut through the shadows, but they regenerated faster than she could strike.

‎The woman laughed, her eyes gleaming with madness. "You cannot defeat what you do not understand."

‎Just then, a brilliant light pierced the darkness. Aelira appeared, the shard now glowing with a steady, golden light in her hand.

‎"Enough," she said, her voice unwavering.

‎She raised the shard, and a wave of light radiated out, dissolving the shadows and dispelling the woman's illusions. The woman staggered back, her control slipping.

‎"You cannot wield it," the woman hissed, her form flickering.

‎Aelira stepped forward, her eyes locked on the woman. "I don't need to wield it, I need to end it."

‎With a swift motion, she shattered the shard, its dark energy dissipating into the air like smoke.

‎The woman screamed, her form unraveling as the dark magic that sustained her unraveled. She collapsed to the ground, lifeless.

‎The forest fell silent.

‎-----

‎As the group stood amidst the stillness, the ground trembled. From the depths of the forest, a low growl echoed—a sound of something ancient and hungry awakening.
