Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10 – “Numbers and Secrets”

The glow of computer screens and the soft hum of data servers filled the analytics department on the 46th floor. Rows of analysts sat focused on spreadsheets, market trends, and financial reports—numbers that could make or break billion-dollar deals.

Li Tian Marvel stepped cautiously through the maze of desks, his steps deliberate. Each familiar face glanced up, some with curiosity, others with thinly veiled suspicion. Yet his destination was clear: Jin Mei Xue's workstation, tucked near the far window overlooking the Shanghai skyline.

He found her seated, eyes sharp behind rectangular glasses, fingers flying across the keyboard as she manipulated charts and graphs with precision. Her expression was unreadable, but the slight lift of her brow when she noticed him suggested that his persistence had not gone unnoticed.

"Tian," she said without looking up. "You're early."

He smiled, attempting a casual tone. "You said you might have time to talk. I need to understand the company's situation—beyond the press releases and boardroom chatter."

She finally turned to face him, her dark eyes steady and assessing. "You want the numbers."

He nodded. "And the politics. I'm not interested in playing the golden heir anymore. I want to know what's really happening."

Jin Mei leaned back in her chair, studying him. "You realize this isn't a game for children anymore, right? This is blood sport. Financial warfare. People are watching, waiting for you to fail."

Tian met her gaze. "I've never been good at losing."

The small conference room they moved into was stark—glass walls, a long table, and a projector ready for use. Jin Mei pulled up multiple spreadsheets, stock performance charts, and internal memos while Tian settled across from her, absorbing every detail.

She started with the stock trends. "Marvel Industries' shares have been unusually volatile for the past two quarters. You'd expect fluctuations, but this level of instability is suspicious."

Tian leaned forward. "Could it be market speculation?"

"Partially. But look here." She pointed to a cluster of transactions marked in red. "Sudden sell-offs from major shareholders, followed by covert purchases from unknown entities overseas. Someone is maneuvering behind the scenes—possibly foreign investors or internal factions looking to destabilize the company."

He frowned. "Sabotage?"

"Likely. But it's not just external. The financials show hidden debts that aren't publicly disclosed. Loans taken out under shell companies tied back to Marvel. Risky deals in emerging markets with unstable governments."

The numbers painted a picture of a company on the edge—teetering between empire and collapse.

Tian felt a mix of awe and dread. "And the board? Are they aware?"

Jin Mei shook her head. "Some are, some aren't. There's a divide. Those loyal to Li Feng want to keep things under wraps. Others see this as an opportunity to push their own agendas."

FLASHBACK

Their voices faded as Tian's mind drifted to childhood memories.

He saw a younger Jin Mei standing before a classroom whiteboard, confidently solving a complex math problem. He remembered the frustration and admiration he'd felt—how she could always outthink him, outmaneuver him in every contest.

Then a flash of a rain-soaked soccer field, where they had competed fiercely, panting and laughing, the heat of rivalry burning bright but tinged with respect.

"Back then, it was just about winning," Tian thought. "Now it's about survival."

Back in the conference room, Jin Mei's voice broke through his reverie.

"You have the potential," she said softly. "But potential isn't enough."

She gestured to a document marked 'Confidential.' "There's more. A project buried deep in the company's classified files. Very few know about it."

Tian leaned closer as she slid the report across the table.

"Project Eclipse," the title blazed in red letters at the top of the page.

"What is it?" he asked, eyes scanning the dense text.

Jin Mei's expression darkened. "A secret initiative launched years ago. Officially, it's been shelved. But there are signs it's still active—off the books, involving technologies and deals that could change Marvel's future… or destroy it."

Tian's mind raced. "Why hide it?"

"Because it's dangerous. Because whoever controls Project Eclipse controls a lot more than just stock and shares. It's about power. Influence. Maybe even control over entire markets."

Jin Mei paused, her eyes locking onto his.

"You want to lead this company? You need to understand these shadows. You need to be prepared for what's coming."

Tian swallowed, feeling the weight of her words settle in his chest.

He thought about his father—Li Feng—the man everyone feared and revered. The man whose illness had thrown the board into chaos. The man who had kept secrets so tightly locked that even Tian was only now beginning to see the cracks.

"Why tell me all this?" Tian asked quietly. "Why help me?"

Jin Mei's answer was not simple.

"Because," she said, "the company's truth matters more than any of us. Not just the heirs, not just the board members—but everyone who depends on Marvel. If this place falls apart, we all fall."

Tian nodded slowly, respect mingling with something new—a cautious alliance.

The meeting ended, but the silence between them held a fragile understanding.

Tian left the conference room with more questions than answers, but for the first time, he felt a glimmer of clarity.

The battles ahead would not be won by charm or entitlement alone.

They would be won with knowledge. Strategy. And allies he could trust—like Jin Mei.
