Chapter 3 - CLOSED

The next day, Alyssa woke up early, as usual. She got ready as per her every fay routine and headed to the station. Her mind focused on the thought of the evidence they had gathered so far as she drove there. The symbol, the surveillance footage, the mysterious murders… who could be behind those? Someone from the cursed lands? What could explain the exsanguination and puncture mark on the victims necks? The idea of someone playing vampire around seemed like the most logic yet the most absurd reason.

As she arrived at the station, she bee lined straight to Alex, who had a dark expression on his face but the commissioner. Mr Martins, called her.

"Naerys! To my office, now!" Alyssa obeyed and walked up the stairs, deciding she'd talk to Alex later. She closed the door behind her once she was inside the office.

"morning sir" she greeted.

"the exsanguination case is closed" was his cold and firm reply.

"What the fuck does that mean?" she asked shocked.

"it is closed and indexed" he repeated and articulated every words.

"I.. I don't understand. Why? The case isn't solved yet. There are families waiting for answers. There are dead people awaiting justice. They can't do that!!"

"what can I do? The order came from up. The best thing is to forget about it."

"how can I -" she started to protest.

"get back to work Naerys! You'll be appointed to a new case." Martins said cutting her off coldly, she had no other choice than to leave, albeit angrily. Her blood ran hot as she walked back dow. to her desk and plopped herself down in her chair. She found Alex in the same state as her, nos she understood the reason of his obvious dark mood. He sat on her desk next to her.

"they are covering their traces" she said lowly.

"the person on the image must be a very important person if he could erase things easily like this."

Alyssa tapped her fingers against the desk, deep in thought. Then she leaned closer to him and whispered.

"I am not giving up. Something's fishy and I am going to get to the end of this"

"why was I sure you'd say that?" Alex smirked.

"are you with me?" she smirked back.

"Always, baby" together they stood up and left the station without saying anything to anyone.

"okay, so where do we start?" Alex ask as they sat in his car.

"let's go to the morgue. Dr Harris, should be able to tell us something more about the strange marks and the video we sent him yesterday" she decided.

"okay" he started the car and drove towatds the morgue.

Soon they parked in front of the morgue, got down from the car and headed straight to Dr Harris' operation room. However, they were surprised to see another man there. A younger man working on the corpse. He had earpiece in his ears and was dancing as he worked through a dead person's body as if it was the most exciting job to do.

"excuse me?" Alex called his attention but he heard nothing at first. Alex had to touch his shoulder to make him jolt back to reality.

"oh hey!" he greeted pulling away his earpiece and smiling. "I didn't see you, sorry" he smiled.

"I am detective Alexander Stanford and this is my colleague Alyssa Naerys"

"nice to meet you, man. Hello lady. I would shake your hands but…" she showed his gloved hands filled with blood.

"it's fine. Excuse me, who are you?" Alyssa asked.

"I am John. The new coroner." Alex exchanged glance with Alyssa.

"where is doctor Harris?"

"he is retired. The poor old man was tired and yesterday was his last day. I was surprised when I was told yesterday that I would start today. I am so happy"

Alex exchanged glance once again with Alyssa. The same thought running through their minds.

"okay. What about the victims from the exsanguination? I suppose you are the one taking over"

"excuse me the what?" John frowned "I don't know about any exsanguination case. Those corpse were brought today. When I came here this morning, the morgue was empty. I even thought I'd have nothing to do but then those ones were brought in today" he spoke with much enthusiasm.

"okay, thank you" Alex said and left the morgue with Alyssa. Her expression was grim and her hands were balled into fists. She got in the car and slammed the car door shut with force. "Aly"

"they sent Dr Harris away, replaced him and made the bodies disappear. Who can do such thing overnight? How could they do that?"

"The people behind this are very competent and influent. It's the only explanation"

"even with so much influence they can't do that in the space of one night"

"don't start with you deranged vampire theory again"

"deranged vampire or not, I'll find who did this"

"Aly, we should maybe just give this up. There is nothing we can work on. And the commissioner said-"

"fuck the commissioner!" she shouted and got down from the car. Alyssa walked a few meters alone until a coffee. She entered and sat at the bar, then ordered a cold beer. The drink was served almost immediately and she downed the content. The alcohol burned it's way down her throat and spread through her chest.

Alyssa knew she needed to find answers. She didn't know why but this story was too weird and tugged hard at her guts. Then, an idea struck her. It might be stupid but better start with something than nothing. She decided to go and see him. If her intuition about this was right then he would be the one able to help her.

With that in mind, she paid for her drink and left, boarded a cab to the precinct to get her car. The road to his house is long about half a day but it should be worth it.
