Chapter 86: Still Have To Do It!
The young man felt a chill when he saw Chen Xiaoxiao instruct Gardevoir to heal Gastly.
After all, stealing a wild Pokémon's belongings might be common in ghost towns, but being caught red-handed was another story.
He was already preparing to retreat.
But what shocked him was how swiftly Gardevoir's Heal Pulse worked!
In a blink, Gastly stirred, already showing signs of recovery.
Even more startling—Gastly whimpered something unintelligible, and the girl seemed to instantly understand the entire situation!
"Is that Gardevoir using Telepathy? Or... does this girl actually understand Pokémon speech? Either way, I've been found out." The young man grit his teeth in frustration.
He hesitated—then slowly extended the hand holding the energy cube bag, ready to return it.
But before he could pass it back, Dusknoir blocked his path, floating between him and Chen Xiaoxiao, its lone eye glowing ominously.
"...Forget it. I've already lost face by being exposed. Might as well keep going." The young man sighed inwardly and retracted his hand.
"My Dusknoir doesn't seem to want to give it back," he said with a forced smile.
"Heh. So you were planning to return it?" Chen Xiaoxiao narrowed her eyes.
"I got it from a wild Pokémon. That's fair game. You can't exactly police every bag in the forest," the man shrugged.
"That's mine. I gave that pack to little Gastly myself."
Gastly squeaked in agreement, hovering beside her with a forlorn look.
The young man winced. Her words and Gastly's reaction confirmed the truth. He had stolen from someone who had bonded with the Pokémon.
This wasn't just about wild Pokémon anymore—it was personal. And he had been caught red-handed by someone the ghost-type clearly trusted.
He said nothing, too embarrassed to admit guilt.
"Gardevoir! Confusion!" Chen Xiaoxiao's voice snapped like a whip.
The air warped around Gardevoir as her eyes blazed blue. A psychic wave burst toward Dusknoir.
"Dusknoir! Shadow Punch—intercept it!" the young man barked reflexively.
As the ghost's massive fist, enveloped in spectral shadow, collided with Gardevoir's Confusion, a blast echoed through the forest. Leaves rustled violently as the wave of energy rolled through the misty trees, amplifying the ghost town's eerie atmosphere.
The young man clenched his jaw. "Her Gardevoir... is powerful."
Even his Elite-level Dusknoir, trained for years, had to push itself to counter Gardevoir's raw force.
"Gardevoir! Moonblast!" Chen Xiaoxiao didn't wait for a pause.
A brilliant orb of silvery-pink light began forming in front of Gardevoir—a concentrated Fairy-type strike.
"Dusknoir, Disable! Then hit her with Payback!"
(Disable: Prevents the target from using its last move.
Payback: Deals double damage if the user moves after the target.)
It was a risky move, but he had no choice. The only way to prevent Gardevoir's devastating Moonblast was to endure it—and punish her afterward.
Moonlight flared as the blast hit Dusknoir square in the chest, knocking it back. It cried out but clung to consciousness long enough to unleash Payback—a swirling dark wave of retribution—toward Gardevoir.
Gardevoir recoiled from the hit. Though her Fairy-typing made her resistant to Dark-type attacks, Payback still landed hard. She stumbled, bruised but standing.
Meanwhile, Dusknoir—despite his defensive stats—was staggering. Gardevoir's Moonblast had nearly cut his stamina in half.
"Dusknoir, hold on!" the young man called out anxiously, rushing forward.
Unbeknownst to either trainer, something stirred beneath the soil nearby. A mischievous Pokémon with glowing orange eyes—likely a Sableye—emerged silently from the shadows. Its slender hand snatched the energy cube bag from the young man's belt.
With a grin full of jagged teeth, it sank back into the ground—unnoticed.
"Gardevoir! Mental Shock—now!" Chen Xiaoxiao ordered.
Gardevoir gathered her psychic energy again, pushing aside her injuries.
"Shadow Sneak! Intercept!" the young man countered.
Dusknoir's shadow stretched like a tendril, racing toward Gardevoir. But just before it hit—
"Teleport—now!"
In a shimmering blur, Gardevoir disappeared. She reappeared 300 meters away mid-attack, continuing her Psychic from the new position.
That sudden shift threw the young man into shock.
"Teleport during an attack!? That's not standard! Has she trained this specifically...?"
Indeed, Chen Xiaoxiao had drilled this into Gardevoir for months. Though it only worked with Psychic-type moves—not yet with Fairy ones like Moonblast—it was enough.
"Dusknoir, dodge—hurry!"
But the Psychic was already in motion. A column of mental energy slammed into Dusknoir before he could react.
Boom!
Dusknoir's eye dimmed. With a groan, the ghost collapsed. Faint spirals danced in his eye socket—he was out cold.
"Dusknoir!" The young man ran to his fallen partner, pulling out a Potion and cradling him gently.
Across the clearing, Gardevoir floated triumphantly, her aura pulsing brighter than ever.
Something had changed.
She had just crossed a threshold—one step closer to Champion-level strength.
