The corridor felt colder that morning, like the stones had absorbed Lord Thalen's voice and were still humming with his threats. I kept my hands tucked into my sleeves as I walked, but it didn't stop the sting in my cheek from flaring every time I moved my jaw. I could still feel the weight of his eyes, the way he had adjusted his sleeves as if slapping me was as routine as breathing. A reminder, not of my place in these games, but of how easily they could strip away the illusion of control I thought I had.
