"You've only taken their empathy and given them deaths to enjoy." I moved to the chair across from his desk. "This competition of yours. These games. How many have died so far?"
"Not enough." He sat down, leaning back in his chair. "The strong survive. The weak perish. That's the natural order."
"And Koda? What happens when this girl of his dies in your games?"
"I want her to die." The certainty in his voice was absolute. "She's strong. Stronger than most. But she will not survive."
"And if she does?"
"She won't," Nahuel's smile was cold. "My son will learn that love is a weakness that gets people killed. Just like I did with his mother."
Oh, it was going to happen.
"Perhaps," I said slowly, "enough death has happened. Surely our enemies have learned their lesson by now. They know not to attack us."
"Do they?" Nahuel stood and walked back to the window. "I'm not convinced. There are still those who see weakness in mercy. Who mistake restraint for fear."
