She instinctively wanted to turn back and warn Daisy Sanchez that the police might already know everything they had planned. Martin Riley hadn't stayed behind because he was under suspicion; he was setting a trap for them. Although she wasn't sure why he had come out early, it was clear their plan had been exposed.
As Isabella White reached the door, she paused. She gazed thoughtfully at Daisy, her lips curling into a slight smile as she turned and left.
When Isabella got home, she found her mother drinking. Ever since her father had fallen ill and been hospitalized, her mother had taken to drinking a lot. She was clearly tipsy, waving the bottle at Isabella as she entered.
"Come join me for a drink. I'm in a good mood today," her mother said.
Isabella walked over to her. "Mom, stop drinking. Something's happened."
Mrs. White let out a mocking laugh. "What could possibly have happened? Did your comatose father wake up?"
