Chapter 10 - THE FORGOTTEN

The winds had shifted.

Though the city of Thar Morvain was slowly being rebuilt, there were whispers on the breeze—echoes of something darker, older, hidden beneath the surface of the land. Kaela had felt it the moment she took the throne: a subtle pull, a tugging sensation deep in her bones that told her the fire was not as simple as she thought.

The Ember Crown had brought her power, yes. It had given her strength, wisdom, and control over the flame that flowed through her veins. But there was something in the way the flame flickered now—something that did not sit right. The warmth was familiar, but there was an undercurrent of coldness, of shadows that twisted beneath its light.

It was that unsettling sensation that had led her to the ancient ruins beneath the citadel—ruins that had been long forgotten, hidden even from the Ash Tyrant's eyes. She had heard rumors of them from the survivors, from old texts left behind in the Tyrant's library, and now, standing before the crumbled stone door, she felt the weight of her decision to venture into the depths.

"Are you sure about this?" Eryndor's voice broke through the stillness behind her. "We know little of what lies beneath. These ruins… they predate even the Tyrant's reign."

"I have to know," Kaela replied, her voice steady. "The fire within me, the Crown—I feel it, Eryndor. There is something wrong. Something the Tyrant never knew, but I must understand."

Eryndor hesitated, his eyes narrowing as he glanced at the door. "Then I'll accompany you."

Together, they pushed aside the fallen stone door, revealing a staircase that descended into darkness. The air was thick with dust and the scent of old magic. With each step they took, the feeling of unease grew stronger, like the ground itself was alive, watching them.

At the bottom of the stairs, they came to an enormous chamber, its walls covered in intricate carvings that flickered faintly with a pale, unearthly light. The flame inside Kaela's chest flared in response, but it was a flicker, a spark rather than the roaring fire she had grown accustomed to. It felt as though the very air itself held its breath.

"What is this place?" Eryndor whispered, his voice echoing off the stone.

Kaela moved forward, her fingers brushing the walls, tracing the ancient symbols etched into the surface. "I don't know. But this… this is where the flame began."

The symbols were not just markings—they were maps, but of a kind Kaela had never seen before. They seemed to show not just the geography of their world, but the lines of magic that pulsed beneath it, winding through the earth like veins, feeding the fire of the land. But there was something darker within the patterns, something that hadn't been there before—something twisted and ancient, hidden beneath the flow of light.

"The Flame…" Kaela breathed, her voice trembling. "This isn't just about fire. It's about life itself."

Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled.

"Kaela!" Eryndor shouted, reaching for her arm, but it was too late. A wave of dark energy surged from the walls, pulling at the air, at the light itself. It swirled around Kaela, and for the first time since she had taken the Ember Crown, she felt the flame within her twist—flickering like a dying ember.

Before her, the walls cracked open, revealing a hidden chamber that pulsed with a light not from the fire—but from something ancient, primordial.

"What is that?" Eryndor gasped, his eyes wide with horror.

Kaela didn't answer. Her gaze was fixed on the center of the chamber, where a dark crystal pulsed with a cold, unnatural energy. It was large—larger than any gem she had ever seen—its surface shifting with an inner darkness, an ink-black flame that seemed to devour the light around it. It was the opposite of the flame she wielded, a shadow of the fire.

But it was also… familiar.

The flame inside her reacted, surging to life in a way that made her stagger backward. The fire in her chest burned brighter, but instead of offering warmth, it seemed to clash with the dark crystal, feeding the very thing it should have destroyed.

"It's calling to you," Eryndor said, fear creeping into his voice. "It's infecting you."

Kaela's head spun. The fire in her chest, the fire that had been her strength, felt like it was being torn apart by the dark crystal. It was as though two forces, one of light and one of shadow, were warring within her. She could feel the struggle, the heat of the flame threatening to consume her from the inside out.

She collapsed to her knees, her hand pressed to her chest, as a voice—whispering, yet powerful—filled her mind.

"You are not the first to bear the Ember Crown, child. You are merely the last of a broken line. The fire you wield… is a curse. A weapon of destruction. And now you will awaken that which sleeps beneath the earth. The Forgotten Flame will rise, and with it, the end of all things."

"No…" Kaela gasped, the words reverberating in her skull. "I won't let it happen."

But the crystal pulsed again, sending a shockwave of dark magic through her body. The flame within her erupted in a violent blaze, burning hotter than ever before. Her vision blurred as she struggled to retain control, but the darkness was too strong.

Eryndor reached out for her, but his hands passed through her, as though she were nothing more than smoke. A cloud of shadowy tendrils erupted from the crystal, wrapping around her, pulling her deeper into its influence.

She felt herself falling, but it was not into darkness. It was into something else—a place where the very fabric of fire and shadow intertwined. And in that place, she heard it again—the voice.

"The Ember Queen cannot escape her fate. You are bound to the flame, and the flame is bound to you. The Forgotten Flame will rise again, and when it does, the world will burn…"

Kaela's heart raced, but in the chaos, she found the strength to reach out, to call upon the fire once more. This time, however, it was not the flame of destruction, but the fire of creation.

With all her will, she pushed against the dark crystal, the flame inside her flaring brighter than ever before.

"No," she said through gritted teeth, her body shaking with the force of the struggle. "I will not be your puppet."

With one final, explosive surge, she broke free from the crystal's pull, the light of her flame consuming the darkness in a burst of power.

The chamber went silent, and the crystal shattered into dust.

But Kaela knew the battle had only just begun.
