Chapter 7 - Beneath The Surface

"I'm telling you, Rach, it was so weird," Evelyn said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He just walked into the bathroom and started talking to me like it was no big deal. And the way he looked at me...it was like he could see right through me."

Rach's eyes were wide with concern. "Okay, this is scary," she repeated. "What did he say to you?"

Evelyn hesitated, replaying the conversation in her mind. "He asked me about my dress and my date...and then he said some really intense stuff. It was like he knew exactly what buttons to push to make me uncomfortable."

Rach's expression turned serious. "You need to stay away from him, Ev. He sounds like a creep."

Evelyn shrugged, her expression thoughtful. "I don't know, Rach. I feel like it's not up to me to stay away from him. He's the one who's being so intense and forward. The question is, will he let go?"

Rach's eyes locked onto hers, her gaze piercing. "You think he's that into you, huh?"

Evelyn nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "I do. And it's not just the way he looks at me or the things he says. It's the way he carries himself around me - like he's already claimed me or something."

Rach's expression turned serious, her brow furrowed in concern. "Well, in that case, you need to be careful, Ev. Men like that can be unpredictable."

The next morning, Evelyn woke up feeling refreshed and determined. She got out of bed and began her morning routine, brushing her teeth and washing her face to wake herself up. As she got dressed in her work attire, she felt a sense of normalcy wash over her. She chose a simple yet elegant outfit, her mind focused on the day ahead and the tasks she needed to accomplish.

As she styled her hair, Evelyn felt a sense of confidence boost. She thought back to her encounter with Daymian and how she had stood up for herself in the bathroom. Talking back to him had given her a sense of empowerment, and she felt like she had finally found her voice. She smiled to herself, feeling a sense of pride and self-assurance.

After finishing her hair and makeup, Evelyn headed to the kitchen to grab a quick breakfast. She poured herself a bowl of cereal and sat down at the table, scrolling through her phone to catch up on any important updates. She chatted with her mom for a bit, discussing the day's schedule and making small talk.

As she ate her breakfast, Evelyn's mind was preoccupied with thoughts of her workday. She went over her to-do list, thinking about the meetings she had scheduled and the projects she needed to present today as Mr. William requested. She felt a sense of focus and determination, ready to tackle the day's challenges.

With her breakfast finished, Evelyn grabbed her bag and headed out the door. She took a deep breath, feeling the morning air fill her lungs, and smiled to herself. She was ready to take on the day, Daymian or no Daymian. Her confidence and self-assurance propelled her forward, and she walked out the door with a sense of purpose.

As Evelyn walked into the office, she flashed a bright smile at George, who was already seated at his desk. "Hey, George! Morning!" she chimed, expecting a friendly response. But George barely looked up from his screen, his nod and brief "Morning" coming across as curt and distant.

Evelyn's brow furrowed slightly, taken aback by George's cold demeanor. She wondered if she had inadvertently done something to upset him, but she didn't have time to dwell on it. She shrugged it off and continued to her own desk.

As she approached her desk, her eyes widened in surprise. A beautiful bouquet of flowers sat on her desk, the vibrant colors and delicate petals instantly lifting her mood. A small card tucked among the blooms caught her eye, and she reached out to read the message. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw the words, penned in elegant handwriting: "You're even more stunning than I remembered. -D".

Evelyn's eyes scanned the office, her mind racing with questions. Who could have sent these? And how did they know her desk? The initials "D" seemed all too familiar, and a shiver ran down her spine as she felt a sense of unease wash over her.

As Evelyn stood at her desk, admiring the beautiful bouquet of flowers, she heard Mr. Williams' voice booming across the office. "Evelyn! Can I see you for a minute?"

She turned to see her boss walking out of his office, a warm smile on his face. She felt a sense of curiosity as she followed him into his office.

Once they were seated, Mr. Williams congratulated her on her new role as assistant manager. "Evelyn, I'm pleased to inform you that you've been promoted to assistant manager, effective immediately."

Evelyn's eyes widened in surprise, and she felt a sense of bewilderment. "Thank you, Mr. Williams, but...I hadn't even presented my project yet," she said, her voice tinged with confusion.

Mr. Williams leaned back in his chair, a knowing glint in his eye. "You have Daymian to thank for this promotion, Evelyn. Like I said, he owns the street, so let's just say, he knows people."

Evelyn's mind reeled as she processed the news. Daymian's influence was evident, and she couldn't help but wonder what his motives were. How did he do this and why? She felt a mix of gratitude and unease, unsure of how to react.

Mr. Williams' words still lingered in the air as Evelyn tried to process the sudden turn of events. "Now, Evelyn, you'll need to get settled into your new role," he said, his voice practical. "You'll be moving into the assistant manager's office right away."

Evelyn nodded numbly, still trying to wrap her head around the news. She was going to be an assistant manager? It all felt surreal. She stood up, her legs feeling a bit unsteady, and followed Mr. Williams out of his office.

As she walked towards the assistant manager's office, Evelyn's mind was a jumble of thoughts. She was still in shock, her brain struggling to catch up with the rapid changes. She couldn't believe that Daymian's influence had led to this sudden promotion. What did it all mean? And what would her new role entail?

The secretary showed her to the office, and Evelyn's eyes widened as she took in the spacious room. It was a far cry from her humble desk out in the open office area. She felt a sense of trepidation as she sat down in her new chair, wondering if she was truly ready for this new challenge.

As Evelyn settled into her new office, she couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and pride. She had worked hard to get to this point, and it was validating to see her efforts recognized. But amidst the excitement, she couldn't shake off the thought of Daymian.

She wondered how she could thank him for his support. But then reality hit her she didn't even have his number, She hadn't expected him to be the one pushing for her promotion, and now she felt a bit stuck.

Evelyn thought about sending a message through the company's internal mail system, but it didn't seem personal enough. She wanted to thank him in a way that showed her genuine appreciation. As she pondered her options, a knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. It was probably the secretary with some paperwork or instructions for her new role.

As she opened the door, she was greeted by one of her colleagues, who congratulated her on her promotion and handed her a folder with some important documents. Evelyn smiled and thanked her, feeling a bit more grounded in her new role.

But her mind kept wandering back to Daymian. She still wanted to thank him, and she didn't want to wait.

Evelyn decided to visit Daymian after work to thank him in person for his role in her promotion. She stood outside his gate, took a deep breath, and walked up to the door. She rang the bell, and after a moment, the door opened. Daymian stood before her, looking handsome and relaxed in his casual attire, a black suit this time. His expression changed from calm to surprised as he took in her presence.

"Evelyn," he said, his voice low and smooth. "What brings you here?"

Evelyn smiled, feeling a mix of nerves and gratitude. "I wanted to thank you in person for your support in my promotion," she said, her voice sincere.

Daymian's eyes locked onto hers, and he stepped aside, inviting her in. "Come on in," he said. "Let's talk about it inside."

As they sat down in the living room, Evelyn couldn't help but notice the way Daymian's eyes seemed to sparkle with amusement. "So, you're thanking me now?" he asked, his voice tinged with a hint of playfulness.

Evelyn felt a flutter in her chest as she met his gaze. "Yes, I'm grateful for your support," she said, trying to maintain her composure.

Daymian leaned in, his voice taking on a teasing tone. "And how do you plan on showing your gratitude?" he asked, his eyes glinting with mischief.

Evelyn's cheeks flushed slightly as she realized the undertone of his question. "I'll make sure to repay the favor somehow," she said, trying to sound casual despite the butterflies in her stomach.

Daymian chuckled, his eyes never leaving hers. "I'm looking forward to it," he said, his voice low and smooth.

As they chatted, Evelyn couldn't shake off the feeling that Daymian's gratitude was not just about the promotion, but something more. She stood up to leave, feeling a mix of gratitude and unease. "Thank you again, Daymian," she said, her voice sincere.

Daymian stood up, his eyes locked onto hers. "Anytime, Evelyn," he said, his voice low and smooth. "I'm always happy to help and be thanked in person."

Evelyn smiled, feeling a sense of awareness about the dynamics between them. As she walked out the door, she couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead.

Just as Evelyn was about to leave, she turned to Daymian with curiosity. "You know, I've been wondering," she said, her voice tinged with intrigue. "How do you always seem to find out about things? You knew I was up for a promotion, I'm not sure i mentioned that to you, and those flowers...how did you know exactly where to send them?"

Daymian smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Ah, my secrets," he said, his voice low and teasing. "I'm not telling, but about the flowers I've been to your office before, so I knew where to send them."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "Come on, tell me," she pressed, her voice playful.

Daymian chuckled, his eyes never leaving hers. "Let's just say I'm a man of mystery," he said, his voice smooth. "And I like it that way."

Evelyn laughed, feeling a sense of fascination with Daymian's air of mystery. "You're impossible," she said, shaking her head.

Daymian grinned, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "That's what makes life interesting," he said, his voice low and smooth.

Evelyn smiled, feeling a sense of awareness about the dynamics between them. "I suppose you're right," she said, her voice tinged with a hint of playfulness.

As she turned to leave, Daymian's voice stopped her. "Evelyn," he said, his tone low and smooth.

She turned back to him, her eyes meeting his. "Yes?" she asked, her voice curious.

Daymian's smile was enigmatic. "I'll see you soon," he said, his voice tinged with a hint of promise.

Evelyn's heart skipped a beat as she processed his words. She smiled, feeling a sense of anticipation. "I'm looking forward to it," she said, her voice playful.

As she walked out the door, she couldn't help but wonder what Daymian had planned next.
