Chapter 2 - (Rude) Awakening

BeeBeep! BeeBeep! BeeBeep! BeeBeep!

I slapped my hand on my alarm clock eagerly. "Ahh!" I stretched my arms up; not a single bone cracked! "Time to get…" I looked at the clock, "I'M LATE!" How the hell did this happen?! I'm late on my first day?!

I couldn't even speak as I rushed into the bathroom, re-emerging with a toothbrush in my mouth and soon hopping into my skirt. Spit! I threw my mouth to the running sink, swished the water around, and spat again. Running passed the kitchen counter, I popped two slices of bread into the toaster and slammed the handle down. I skidded to a stop in front of the mirror in my bedroom. Brush, brush, brush; rush, rush, rush; and my hair was up and out of my face, at least. Slip on my shoes, and I was running out the door!

Down the stairs, around the corner, and as the cement walls became a blur in my peripherals I realized, "GAH! I forgot my toast!" I threw my head back in agony as I ran. My first day, I'm late, and I don't even have the iconic piece of toast bouncing from my mouth?! "Am I even in an anime?!" A couple of people stared at me while I zoomed by, yelling at myself.

Ding dong, dong ding; dong ding, ding dong.

I skidded to a stop on the last chime, throwing open the classroom door with all of my strength. Everybody stared at me; they were all standing and just beginning to calmly take their seats. I tried not to look like I was totally out of breath by taking a big puff and walking in confidently. My heart was trying to break through my ribs and I could feel the beads of sweat on my forehead considering new lives as rolling droplets. I took a seat near the window so I could turn my head and pant for a second without calling too much attention to the fact that I was either dying or seriously out of shape. For the first time in my life I thought about how much fresh air was outside.

A hand tapped my shoulder, "Running late today?" I turned to see a nice-looking young girl standing next to me. Her uniform was impeccable, and her hair was pulled back with swooping braids on each side of her head that formed a little bun above the rest of her silky, dark hair; she was not running late today.

"Uh," I smirked through my embarrassment, patting down my messy ponytail "Just a little…"

"What's your name?"

My heart soared. Is this the beginning of a beautiful friendship? I put on my poker face and tried to sound cool as I answered, "I am Sakura Watanabe."

The girl's smile grew; she looked so cute! "Your seat is back there then."

Erk! I felt an arrow pierce my heart. My beautiful friendship! It was gone now! I turned to look at the board for the first time; there was an adorably cartoonish chalk map of the seats with our surnames written on each little desk drawing. Mine was the furthest back window seat; the seat I was sitting in belonged to a Mio Takayama.

"Eh-heh-heh," I laughed awkwardly as I stood, "And I guess you're Takayama-san?"

"Yes, that's me. Nice to meet you, Watanabe-san. Thanks for moving!" And she sat, neatly setting her school supplies on the desk.

Another arrow shot at me, splitting the first clean in half. She's already moved on!

I sheepishly took my seat and put my head on the desk. Not a great start, but I have the rest of the year to redeem myself; starting now! I rallied, sitting up and taking out my notebook and pencil.

Class began without the desk next to me being filled. There goes my chance of having a desk neighbor...At least I'm a good student. Good things come to good students, right? I looked at the board as the teacher wrote an absolutely incomprehensible math equation; some things never change. No way! We're starting with my worst subject?!
